w0m··on Microsoft 365 Copilot's commercial failure
this; it was a public channel I had access to, but never look at (I'm on... too many to keep up with, fairly large company).
w0m··on Microsoft 365 Copilot's commercial failure
> It’s “installed” at my company but basically refuses to interact with basic company data like files in sharepoint.

on my work computer - there's a sep. 365Copilot app that is tied into Teams,Sharepoint, outlook, and I believe our engineering wiki. Probably other stuff I'm not aware of.

I'm honestly shocked how often I use it now.

If I get a random Pipeline failure; I'll copy/paste it into the o365 Copilot app - and it points me to an email I didn't notice ~3 months ago about a new policy change, and then points me to discussion thread I wasn't on ~2 weeks ago about how to get in compliance with direct links to EngWiki 'how to fix..' documentation, and an Teams link to join the breaking teams Office Hours.

Just off a single ~1 sentence prompt and a stack trace

It's kind of amazing.

w0m··on The GitHub website is slow on Safari
or use a supported OS (linux, or hilariously probably Windows), or install a still-suppored browser (I'd guess Firefox likely still runs latest on there).

I'd put it on the end user for not updating software on 15 y/o hardware and still expecting the outside world to interact cleanly.

w0m··on Claude Opus 4.1
honestly - copilot free mode; and just play with the agentic stuff can give you a good idea. Attach it to Roo and you'll get a good idea. Realize that if you paid to use a better model; you'd get better results as free doesn't have a ton of premium tokens.
w0m··on uBlock Origin Lite now available for Safari
if there's a system; people will go out of their way to game it if there's potentially $$$ involved.

I assume environment variables became popular as it's an 'easy' way to inject secrets without hardcoding them in a config file.
w0m··on Fun with uv and PEP 723
Homebrew does a great job @ initial setup; it does a poor job of keeping a system clean and updated over time.
w0m··on Fun with uv and PEP 723
Agreed. I migrated ~all my personal things to Uv; but I'm sure once I start adopting widely at work I'll find edge cases you need to know the weeds to figureout/work around.
w0m··on Fun with uv and PEP 723
Historically; my rule of thumb is as soon as I can't see the ~entire script without scrolling - time to rewrite in Python/ansible. I Think about the rewrite, but it usually takes awhile to do it (if ever)
w0m··on Meta's Llama 3.1 can recall 42 percent of the first Harry Potter book
The argument is whether the LLM training on the copyrighted work is Fair Use or not. Should META pay for the copyright on works it ingests for training purposes?
w0m··on The Gutting of America's Medical Research
Honestly; the exact opposite. Removing funding for research means either research is canceled, or funded private.

Funding the research privately increases costs to end user as private ensurer is directly accruing more cost. Research stopping increases costs to end user as new/novel cures/treatments aren't found.

Cost for consumer goes up because of lost opportunity cost of 1) learning to diagnose earlier 2) finding new or cheaper cures/treatments.

You can make the argument 'But other countries will pick up the slack!' - but that doesn't necessarily help either, why would they give us the results of their research cheaper? US already jacked up pricing via an executive order on drug pricing just this year to knock that.

Publicly funded medical research is an absolute positive for the US general public health and wallets. We're all losing here on both ends of the spectrum ($$ and actual general public health).

w0m··on Typing 118 WPM broke my brain in the right ways
same on both. On dial-up; I learned to touch type so I could insult my opponent after killing them, but before they re-spawned and could attack me again in a video game.
w0m··on Jjui – A Nice TUI for Jujutsu
ADO handles this by showing a dropdown of 'comment left on update X, currently update Y' with a toggle to show the difference.

I ~hate how ADO handles individual commits (comment left on a single commit is hidden), but I do like the update tracking on a PR as it allows cleaning up the commit tree seamlessly without losing history or comment traceability (less you remove/move files).

w0m··on Changes since congestion pricing started in New York
> I don't find the food tempting

One thing I realized a number of years ago is that my childhood instilled biases in me.

A Few Examples:

Sushi/Raw Fish/ethnic/spicy food == Bad Apple Products == For Suckers Ford == Found On Road Dead (bowtie life) AMD >>> Evil Netburst Intel empire.

When I realized just how irrational I was on soo many subjects (I had never seen sushi or really any ethnic food until I was at my first SDE job as a 20somthing) - it made me re-evaluate.

> pointless to spend time considering it

Since then; Anytime I've ever considered something pointless to consider - it's been a trigger to consider it. Has honestly been kind of life changing revelation; has led to a much more varied and interesting life than I would have led otherwise based off my upbringing/predispositions. I'd even venture as far as to say it's made me inherently happier as a person as I no longer sneer at the apple user/sky diver/snow boarder/ebike rider/mountain climber/etc - now I look into it and possibly plan a trip.

I'm not saying "vegan > Meat" - I myself BBQ fairly often; but I'd also advise one to consider the vegan entree you sneered at prior; it may well just surprise you. And if it doesn't; the punishment is a deeper understanding! (.. and maybe paying for second lunch. but that's the risk)

w0m··on Changes since congestion pricing started in New York
> Genuine questions : why do you eat meat ?

I know not aimed at me, but honest answer: because I grew up eating it. Environmental/moral concerns have never been a prime concern as I don't consider them problems reasonably solved or helped by individual choices. Having sat don for a lengthy talk with an adherent, veganism itself comes off as smug self righteous delusion to me.

But that's my opinion, and opinions are much like assholes in general cleanliness and presentability in public.

w0m··on Changes since congestion pricing started in New York
I'll reword it. The idea isn't to make everyone skip meat; but to make the non-meat options more competitive. I say this as one with multiple briskets in my chest freezer waiting for some good weather.
w0m··on Changes since congestion pricing started in New York
Think about it more; if the vegan and steak options were ~equivalently priced - more would choose vegan than if it wasn't more expensive. The idea isn't to make it prohibitive; insofaras don't make the most environmentally-expensive choice also the cheapest.

To compare it to traffic; everyone is miserable sitting in traffic; so giving people an excuse for a bit more WFH is a WinWin.

w0m··on Should We Respect LLMs? A Study on Influence of Prompt Politeness on Performance
IIRC there was a study done that being polite to an LLM garnered better results. It's helpful all around
w0m··on Should We Respect LLMs? A Study on Influence of Prompt Politeness on Performance
ding ding ding.

If you're rude to an LLM, those habits will bleed into your conversations with barista/etc.

w0m··on Getting forked by Microsoft
It looks like they relatively recently migrated the entire codebase from Apache to MIT. I wonder if that was in relation to pulling in code from Spegel. They updated ~every header.

> My personal experience is that adoptive parents are overwhelmingly conservative.

The current republican leadership has been pretty shit lately insofar as being human. “The fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy” being a direct and recent quote by arguably the most powerful man on the planet.

That isn't to disagree with your personal experience by any stretch; just point out that those in power/pushing these laws are much more... raging asshole. MGT celebrating the popes death today as another example.

That's why the current voting trends frustrate me so much; base morality seems to have left the conversation. :(

w0m··on Apple Introduced Its Most Controversial MacBook 10 Years Ago Today
I had the last non-butterfly MBP, and work tried to get me to move to a new one for years - i fought to keep mine.

Then I switched jobs, got a butterfly MBP and the laptop was honestly one of the worst I've had. After 2 years, I had lost a number of keys (i simply never used the built in keyboard when possible) and the battery started expanding. I couldn't even make it to the normal refresh cycle. Maybe bad luck, but such a POS. Apple phoned it in the generation prior to M1.
