vvoyer··on Remix full stack React framework v1
Some context:

- Remix creators are the authors of React Router (v6 was released recently: https://reactrouter.com/)

- Remix was initially a closed source paid framework then moved to open source.

- They raised a $3M seed funding in October: https://remix.run/blog/seed-funding-for-remix

- Kent C. Dodds, a very prolific React developer, joined them as a Co-Founder and Director of Developer Experience

vvoyer··on Grafana OnCall: an easy-to-use on-call management tool
Shameless plug, if you're looking for a simple shift scheduling calendar connected to Slack, I built this: https://turnshift.app.

It's a team calendar to share recurring tasks as a team. Things like PR reviews, who's on support, or who's qualifying leads.

It has far less features than PagerDuty or Grafana OnCall but it serves well a bunch of customers looking for a simple tool to manage team schedules.

vvoyer··on Xata – Database service for serverless apps
Hey there! Congrats on the landing page, it looks very promising.

As for the database and search engine, are you building on top of existing systems a unified API? i.e. are you building a smart layer on top of PostgreSQL for DB and Elastic for search?

Thanks!

vvoyer··on GitHub’s engineering team has moved to Codespaces
As much as I’d like to try this, the blog post reads as « our dev environment was so heavy, our git repository so old that we put everything in the cloud even your dev env ».

If you’re building a new startup, you don’t need this. Use docker-compose.

The current latest full stack project I built requires a single command: npm run dev. Launches docker-compose (PostgreSQL), Next.js and ngrok (expose/webhooks).

And it takes 10 minutes to setup.

Not everybody has the requirements of GitHub!

Still, I’m sure I’ll use this in a year :)

vvoyer··on Hello Yarn 2, Goodbye node_modules
Yarn 3.0 was released in July 2021 (https://dev.to/arcanis/yarn-3-0-performances-esbuild-better-...)

Meanwhile, as much as I respect the work of Mael (yarn maintainer) I’ve switched back to npm. Mostly because:

- isaacs (original creator of npm) did some commits lately

- now backed by GitHub

- they introduced workspaces (monorepo support) in npm 7

- it’s still easier to use the standard tooling in dev/ci/prod

- like many, I had issues trying to convert my projects to yarn v2/3

The only thing yarn did I want in npm is an easy way to enforce the npm version across all environments (https://classic.yarnpkg.com/en/docs/cli/policies/).

The DNS part is a joke (I guess?) about how unreliable and surprising DNS issues can be. You could do the same with caching.
vvoyer··on Show HN: AI Background Remover
Hey Jacob! I am discovering all theses tools myself (I joined PhotoRoom 5 weeks ago and created the web tool of this post).

We're indeed mobile first but plan to go on the web more aggressively in the coming weeks. Our mobile app has a lot of editing features, effects, touch retouch/inpaiting and interactive segmentation (subject selection, scribbles) just like Clipping Magic.

I also love competition even if we try not to look to much at it and just roll with our user feedback and requests.

PS: I've used Vector Magic in the past, amazing tool :) Also used https://www.pngtosvg.com/ which works really well besides the very hacky-look webpage.

vvoyer··on Show HN: AI Background Remover
Hey there, could you link me your picture via https://imgbb.com/? So I can have a look, thanks!
vvoyer··on Show HN: AI Background Remover
Thanks. We've seen it go both ways: sometimes the results are better on PhotoRoom, sometimes they are better on remove.bg. If you try the mobile app you'll see that we do have ways to easily correct the background remover algorithm.

For example you can adjust the subject selection or just scratch the parts you don't want and we'll try to infer the bigger picture from theses scratches.

We will bring this functionality to the web very soon. Thanks for the feedback!

vvoyer··on Show HN: AI Background Remover
We started as a mobile app and the subscription model was the obvious choice here. Most of our pro users are hardcore PhotoRoom users that will need this on multiple occasions.

Now for one off users this is a good question, especially on the web where this could make more sense. I know some tools (remove.bg) that have this system so we'll think about it.

Thanks!

vvoyer··on Show HN: AI Background Remover
That's awesome feedback, our ML engineers will be very proud :)
vvoyer··on Show HN: AI Background Remover
Nice project @darermx! Just tried it on a few picture and it's impressive. To be fair this is not working as great for theses pictures as PhotoRoom background remover but still a good start!
vvoyer··on Show HN: AI Background Remover
Hey there, indeed I put an upsell screen at the end of the download because our mobile apps are currently the most advanced background remover and image editing tools we have.

The price for the mobile app is $9.50 per month and there's a free version.

vvoyer··on JavaScript Is Weird
^ This! It's "learning content" for tiktok-devs I guess.
vvoyer··on JavaScript Is Weird
I stopped at the first example (true + false).

If you write code like this, you have bigger problems than using JavaScript. For most of the examples, it's like saying "Here's what happens when you plug a fan to a faucet". There's no point really.

JavaScript is weird just like any other language can be weird when you use it in weird ways. And yes, it's certainly one of the weirdest.

If you want to talk about things weird in JavaScript, let's talk about ES modules in Node.js and the Browser, or the number of decisions you have to make to bootstrap a simple web app in JavaScript, and how a language written in 10 days is shipped to billion of devices today.

But, this kind of content, (while well made technically) is always the same one about JavaScript.

vvoyer··on Stripe Tax
Precision: if you're using Stripe checkout only. On a custom integration you do need to get the customer VAT ID and add it to your Stripe customer
vvoyer··on Stripe Tax
Hey there, I believe validating VAT numbers is outside of the Stripe tax pricing and part of the Customer Tax IDs API, without any extra charge. Maybe someone from Stripe can confirm?

https://stripe.com/docs/billing/customer/tax-ids

And yes, if you sell only to B2B Europe and everyone inputs their VAT number you're fine (because you actually don't have to charge VAT, it's a reverse charge). Stripe tax do know this nowadays.

But that's actually not so common, people signing up for products usually have no idea what the VAT number of their company is. But they are capable of getting a credit card and giving you a business address.

In this case, you have to compute VAT rates based on the country of the customer.

(This is not an accounting advice, just personal experience!)

vvoyer··on Stripe Tax
Nope, if you have $100k transactions in a year, it will be $100,000 * 0.005 = $500 not $4,000 (And 0.4% is when you make more than $50,000 in a month)

I too made the mistake of doing amount*0.05 when they provided me the pricing in beta.

This is why I went with them, if I can't do a simple percentage computation I'd rather not do the taxes myself.

And if you're making $1M a year, it will then be $4,000. And I guess that's still cheaper than having your accountant going through all your Stripe documents, computing taxes while also, on your side, having to make sure you're 100% tax compliant. Maybe at $10,000,000 it will start being a bit pricey, but at that point you'll most probably discuss with Stripe to reduce that fee.

vvoyer··on Stripe Tax
Thanks, I updated my comment.
vvoyer··on Stripe Tax
I was lucky to be part of the beta for my SaaS (https://turnshift.app) and I must say this new feature simplifies things A LOT.

Especially as a EU business owner, I previously had to sync every VAT tax rate possible, use a complex workflow to know if a customer needed to pay taxes or not, link tax rates to customers, and create taxes reports for my accountant. Stripe tax does all of that automatically, based on the customer full address and VAT numbers.

Here's a twitter thread of everything you had to do previously: https://twitter.com/vvoyer/status/1347488977738149888

PS: Yes there were other services (Paddle) providing this (and much more to be honest), but the Stripe API and customization options makes it my go-to solution for integrating payments.

vvoyer··on Autocomplete.js v1 by Algolia
Autocomplete.js is the successor of twitter/typeahead. It's a source-agnostic autocomplete JavaScript library that has just been rewritten to allow for more autocomplete UIs and better stability.

Of course it works with Algolia indexes, but it can also work with any type of asynchronous data sources.

vvoyer··on Show HN: TurnShift, I turned an Algolia internal scheduling tool into a SaaS
Hey there, simple answer: I completely rewrote the internal tool. I did not write the code originally. I took the idea and rewrote it completely.

Thanks, just did the change :)
vvoyer··on Show HN: TurnShift, I turned an Algolia internal scheduling tool into a SaaS
Thanks for the feedback and question: I worried/wondered the same.

How it's going: one sale as of now (deal is one day old).

To be honest if I ever get in trouble for selling too much on AppSumo this will be a good problem for me. Right now I am looking at getting as much user feedback as possible so no I am not worried.

As of now the product feature set is not so big so support wise I should be fine.

30 days to 14 days that's a good point. I went for the de-facto standard without thinking it too much, if you have more details I'd be happy to learn. I might just try 14 days and see how it goes too.
