vsnf··on Anthropic Chief of Staff: These next 3 years might be the last few that I work
Also, it's hard for proponents, often those in AI companies, to avoid coming off as either buying into their own hype, or otherwise just pushing the marketing for their product. The AI person is so convinced that AI will be so good that it might end work as we know it? Maybe, but it's also good for pushing the bull case for his company.
vsnf··on This Message Does Not Exist
This is the best one so far. Combine that with the 'if you refresh this page the text will disappear' from another poster and I think we have a very workable error message that outlines the issue, solution, and due caution necessary, for the potentially non-technical user.
vsnf··on Helldivers 2 has caused over 20k Steam accounts to be banned
The (obvious) Chinese players on the US wow servers were always good farmers (aka cheaters), but perhaps counter intuitively, if you managed to befriend them, they were usually pretty cool people. Very friendly, would chat back and forth in a new created English-mandarin pidgin, maybe they’d share some gold or items with you.
vsnf··on All of Microsoft's MacBook Air-beating benchmarks
Why sadly? I’m quite happy with windows, thank you very much. I have just as many gripes against MacOs as I’m sure you do against windows.
vsnf··on The KeePassXC Kerfuffle
This could be interesting. Can the dead be charged with crimes? Can they be posthumously convicted? I’m sure the system would quickly find that the party in question is in fact alive in this case, but fun to ponder idly on.
vsnf··on Lisbon, a city dying from its own success
Products and services. Presumably they were alluding to things like software, electronics, manufacturing, consulting, banking, shipping, and other such things which drive the more advanced economies. An economy built almost exclusively on restaurants and hospitality is doomed to the lower tiers of success.
vsnf··on AI products like ChatGPT much hyped but not much used, study says
Good question. I guess I don't have any expectation that someone would. I was just stuck by the somewhat aggressive tone and strength of their statement. When people talk so aggressively I prefer to see them putting their money where their mouth is.
vsnf··on AI products like ChatGPT much hyped but not much used, study says
Very true, which is part of why I don't have any positions on anything myself. But OP had a timeframe of 'until the end of the year'. If I felt strongly about something and had a timeframe like that, I'd place some bets.
vsnf··on AI products like ChatGPT much hyped but not much used, study says
I have no skin in this game myself, nor do I have any strong opinions one way or the other (though I too have a hard time imagining truly useful LLM-based solutions), but if you're willing to speak with such conviction, I'd like to see your short positions against NVidia et all.
vsnf··on NSA Ghidra open-source reverse engineering framework
You might be familiar with NSA as an offensive agency interested in subverting security systems, but it's actually composed of two separate and often warring divisions, the second of which is defensive in nature and is interested in securing systems. It is this second division which has a history of contributing in good faith to security projects, public and otherwise.
vsnf··on AI headphones let wearer listen to a single person in a crowd by looking at them
YouTube's automatic captions do this for any word on an ambiguous blacklist. Not only is this annoying when reading the captions, but I imagine that for the hearing impaired, it would also be condescending to have Google tell you what you can and cannot read, especially since the hearing un-impaired experienced it just fine.
vsnf··on My computer has an underscore in its name, and I have trouble with the network
Said in jest, but unironically good advice unless you fully own the environment.
vsnf··on So many feed readers, so many behaviors
> I would assume the reader does something smarter that mindlessly launch 500 requests every 5 minutes.

Aside from respecting any 429 headers, what is a reader supposed to do without custom update heuristics for each feed that would be considered more than mindless?

vsnf··on Inventing Cyrillic
Right, but like a sibling poster pointed out, they've been using Cyrillic, so the migration is similar, at least.
vsnf··on Inventing Cyrillic
> What will be interesting to see is if Bulgaria, Serbia, and Ukraine continue to use Cyrillic or gradually switch to Latin.

Turkmenistan of all places is currently undergoing a gradual switch to Latin, which has happened in fits and starts with various mandates to do so, and then to stop doing so. But the culture seems pretty undeniably to be trending to romanization.

vsnf··on Wiley shuts down 19 science journals and retracts 11,000 gobbledygook papers
I actually love counterfeit consciousness as a way to describe AI as we have it presently.
vsnf··on Git cheat sheet [pdf]
Exactly zero of my mathematics professors, and a large portion of my CS professors managed to adequately account for this. The professors of mine who did manage it remain firmly in my memories as great people and great teachers, while the one's who didn't inhabit an area between complete memory erasure, and disdain for how hard they made my life. This is at the very core of what it means to be a teacher, not just knowing the material, but knowing how to teach the material. I consider many of them to be failures at their main job for failing to navigate the curse.
vsnf··on Ask HN: What sites are similar to Hacker News?
It’s heartwarming to hear that /g/ has apparently not changed even one iota from when I last looked at it in high school 15 years ago.
vsnf··on Spotify Car Thing will be discontinued
> I'm not going to berate the server or kitchen staff; unimaginable.

Who is advocating berating staff? I don't see that in OPs post, nor my own. No one suggests being aggressive towards anyone. Saying the company deserves less money is a capitalistic statement aimed at the corporation, not its diligent employees. You're welcome to to silently withdraw your money from a place of business and leave them with no feedback as to why. But 'posturing' about the reasons of a boycott while also withdrawing money is a great way to attach feedback to an action the company might actually listen to.

vsnf··on Spotify Car Thing will be discontinued
Don't denigrate him, he's done the one thing that is simultaneously most likely to affect change at a company, and also the hardest thing for an individual to do: vote with their wallet. He's right, Spotify does deserve less money for their godawful decent into the lower rungs of mediocrity.
vsnf··on Spotify Car Thing will be discontinued
I can think of ten thousand things I'd like the Spotify player to do.

- First of all, stop changing the layout every goddamn day

- Stop pushing podcasts

- Better 'ignore' functionality so I can listen to something without it influencing my recommendations. I know Private Mode exists but it's clumsy and all-or-nothing. I want it to be more granular and available on an as-needed basis.

- Support for player cursors, which is like 'queue', but with the ability to tell Spotify to 'resume playing from this point in the playlist'. Maybe even expand this, and add multiple simultaneous cursor support, allowing for on-demand blackout zones or something.

- Bring back the 30 second press-to-hold song preview. Removing this feature was a crime. "low usage" my ass, so what? Keep it in, you scoundrels, even the SDK still supports it.

- Support for song start/end offsets. This is the #1 most requested feature on their feedback forums, has been open for 10 years, and they only ever occasionally chime in to say "we hear you, but not right now". If the issue is legal, just say so and stop leading us all on.

- Allow me to re-order my Liked Songs.

- Do what Apple Music did and require artists upload lyrics. Partnering with Genius was a dumb move. Genius is inconsistently available, and more often than not, just straight up incorrect.

There are so many more. Their UI is just barely on the right side of acceptable and not one inch further than that. I stay on Spotify because their music discovery is really excellent, I look forward to the new recommendations from Discover Weekly and Release Radar, and I think the Spotify Wrapped is a lot of fun every year. But as a music player, it is deficient to the highest degree.

vsnf··on US Justice Department to seek breakup of Live Nation-Ticketmaster
Given that you chose to quote from a noted white supremacist scholar, it is likely fair to assume that you fall on the same side as the hypothetical impending dictatorship. In that case, sure, the dictatorship will get something done for you. Until of course the leopard comes to eat your face as well. Also in that case, I can see why you promote your narrative of helplessness, since it will hasten the arrival of your glorious new era.
vsnf··on US Justice Department to seek breakup of Live Nation-Ticketmaster
This defeatist attitude is unhelpful. Are you prepared to lose nearly everything come November? What will you do when the dictatorship looms over you, will you accept your dwindling freedoms? What would cause you to actually stand up for yourself and fight for a better future? I see this attitude espoused a lot and I wonder if any of the people who say so will just roll over and accept a creeping totalitarianism with a shrug. Is there literally anything at all that you'd be proactive about?

If you have causes you are passionate about but you refuse to participate in the (hard won, bloodily won) civic right of voting, then your ability to affect those causes will evaporate. No matter how much you think your government doesn't care now, they will care even less when it is truly, wholly, dictatorially unaccountable to you. And then what? What was your anti-voting stance for?

A substantial chunk of the electorate seems to prefer losing and then whining about outcomes as long as it allows them to pat themselves on the back for 'staying above it all and seeing the futility all along'. I implore you instead to care, hold your officials accountable, and vote. A bad future is not inevitable.

vsnf··on One of the most unusual heists in America seems to be unfolding at Taco Bell
With the words "heist" and "Taco Bell", I thought for sure it was going to be a repeat of Operation Soda Steal.
vsnf··on Windows 10 wallpaper was physically built and photographed (2015)
I do recall the Fisher-Price complaints. As I recall it mostly came from the Linux (or Linux-inclined) crowd. I never really understood the complaints, though it was common enough that I must have just been missing something. But really, I don't get whats wrong with a functional UI that's also friendly and inviting.
vsnf··on Windows 10 wallpaper was physically built and photographed (2015)
There was definitely a kind of warm, optimistic vibe that came with the Windows XP wallpaper. The whole UI language of the OS was similar too, with bubbly blues and greens everywhere. I suppose it captured a kind of positive cultural attitude towards computing.
vsnf··on Emory Awards, Then Suspends Students Behind Study-Aide App
I dunno, Universities can often behave like soviets. I was pushed through a university kangaroo court at Northeastern where they tried to (falsely) pin a charge of destruction of the university wifi network on me. They were threatening suspension and expulsion, I had to go to numerous hearings attended by high ranking university officials, and was definitely told that writing a letter of apology would incline the university to lighten my punishment.

I fought my way tooth and nail out of the situation and was exonerated, but I can imagine a hundred reasons why any given student in a similar situation would capitulate.

vsnf··on Show HN: Adblock for Podcasts
Yeah for sure. But is it being done for the huge back catalog of much older podcasts? Maybe the big players already have teams of people hunting for old ad breaks, but this could alleviate the burden.
vsnf··on Show HN: Adblock for Podcasts
Right now someone, somewhere, is thinking of a way to use this to identify the ad portions in old podcasts and overlay new, perpetually relevant, dynamic ads.
vsnf··on Scandal at America's top science fair
> Parental "help", e.g. doing most or all of the work for a science fair entry, is an open secret among Asian communities.

This has been a meme/running gag in countless sitcoms and Sunday morning newspaper comic strips for as long as I can remember. Not the Asian community part, just the 'parents actually doing the work' part. The joke is typically about overly competitive middle class suburban fathers juxtaposed against their children who have better things to do than care about dorky school projects.
