vsgherzi··on America.gov goes crazy on "play Minecraft"
This is the dialog that plays when you beat Minecraft but in the context of the government
vsgherzi··on The U.S. government launched an AI chatbot
It looks pretty good on my end, which parts are breaking for you? I’m just using safari
vsgherzi··on Containers Are No Longer a Security Boundary
Containers on Linux are not and were never a security boundary. Containers are simply namespaces and cgroup. Other operating systems may include more robust facilities.
vsgherzi··on Supply Chain Compromise of Korean-Language Windows 11 Installation Media
This is insane ??? Am i understanding this correctly? Official Microsoft media installer was compromised? This seems to be on the level similar to that of the xz attack, no?
vsgherzi··on Thelio Mira AI Linux Workstation: 192 GB GPU Memory
Taiwan would disagree
vsgherzi··on Canada holds first defense talks with China in more than 8 years
I’m not exactly a fan of certain policies being pushed in the US but aligning with China is a bad idea. Chances are if you’re is disagreement with US policies you’re going to be in disagreement with China’s policies even more.
vsgherzi··on How do I remove the controls from a school Chromebook
Ultimately you cannot and it would be irresponsible to do so. It is not "your" chromebook it is the school's. In this scenario you'll have to put up with the restrictions or better yet get your own device. If money is tight I recommend going to e waste facilities.

Now I do understand this energy and had a few run ins with things like this in my youth.

If you really want to go through with this, which again, is not right and will get you into trouble.

I recommend looking into chromebook powerwashing. it will reset lots of firmware to stock.

There's not going back and it will completely wipe the system.

vsgherzi··on Saving 100 terabytes of memory by optimizing 1.1.1.1's DNS cache
you could always do a .get into the vector and handle the error, it doesn't necessarily need to panic.

Thank being said in this case it should be impossible to index out of bounds so maybe a panic is warented.

vsgherzi··on Apple Silicon's Surprisingly Speedy SIMD
Besides Apple who is doing hpc on Apple silicon
vsgherzi··on Fixing Rust's supply chain security: The good, the bad and the ugly
I feel like a broken record so appologies if I say the same thing every time.

I don't want a fat std lib. What should or shouldn't go into the std lib? Something like axum might be reasonable for some but not me if I want to target something smaller. Creating a fat std lib also increases the load on a team that's already stressed.

Go can do things like include a web server because that's what the language is for, making web servers.

Personally I'd prefer if the foundation nominate a few projects such as Tokio and take them under their wing. The maintainers would stay the same but the foundation would provide funding and a stricter governing and auditing in the same way as the main language does.

I think sandboxes are just kicking the can down the road. Companies are running scans on crates io, I'd like to see a first party one from the foundation as well, required before a package could fully be published.

Cooldowns are another option but honestly I'd rather them be able to be scanned in some sort of resitrcted format

perhaps cargo add tokio --force-latest

so scanners could grab them but not people

vsgherzi··on NYC's 911 System Had an Outage. Officials Kept Quiet About It
I appreciate them taking steps to fix it but first and foremost is transparency. I think citizens have a right to know if the system is down or not. It may lead them to take different decisions.
vsgherzi··on Mozilla says stricter antitrust measures against Google 'threaten Firefox'
That’s true but I think most people’s beef is that most of the funding for Mozilla isn’t going to that work. Wethers that’s the case or no I have no idea, but that’s the general sentiment
vsgherzi··on Senate OS Age Requirement Bill Introduced
get this shit out of here. No Age requirements at the OS level. This is ridiculous.
vsgherzi··on Oxide Computer raises $445M (SEC Form D)
as far as I can tell, yes?

It seems like Jane street and lawrence national laboratory are two confirmed customers.

vsgherzi··on The US government just banned Roombas
For your own question. All ai is going to come with the bias of the country that made it. If you ask the various Chinese ai models about Taiwan you’re going to get some interesting responses compared to the US ones. However this is mostly irrelevant to the larger picture. The larger issue is that AI is the new thing and it’s got potential. It’s driving economies and is on the world stage this is what makes it important.

So it’s less that other countries have an evil ai and more what does it mean if the US dosent “win” here. In that sense Chinese AI is absolutely a threat and should be considered especially with the gold rush currently happening in the field.

vsgherzi··on T-Mobile outage, no updates from the company
On newest iOS this didn't work for me. But it did work for my friend who has a slightly older iOS version. I imagine it's probably related to the difference in areas we're physically in rather than anything on Apple's side.
vsgherzi··on T-Mobile outage, no updates from the company
It seems like this is something that's effected multiple providers. For tmobile, I'm on Google FI

I've restarted my phone and tried the airplane mode strat but no dice I'm completely kicked out....

Perhaps it's time to try Verizon

vsgherzi··on Maybe we should revisit microkernels
The asahi Linux gpu driver has gotten pretty darn close to being very solid.
vsgherzi··on Maybe we should revisit microkernels
Unfortunately Fuchsia seems all but dead these days
vsgherzi··on Maybe we should revisit microkernels
Edit omg… I was thinking of unikernels…
vsgherzi··on Maybe we should revisit microkernels
Errors in the code potentially mean killing the liveness of the system or worse corrupting the system in a poor state. Think the networking stack getting corrupted because of bad business logic.

Also very hard to debug

vsgherzi··on OpenAI and Hugging Face address security incident during model evaluation
Another important part here. It's not as if they prompted the open source AI to stop the rogue AI but rather just used it as a tool to crawl logs and determine what happened.
vsgherzi··on Eric Schmidt tried to convert Google to Java
Wow … that’s quite the comment. I can’t say I’ve made this connection. Could you expand on this more?

My gripes with Java are because I feel it’s

1. A poor language to introduce students to computer science

2. Contains a poor api for date and time

3. Encourages overly verbose oop design

4. Has an infuriating garbage collector that’s often extremely hard to debug. Most advice just tells me to use a different garbage collector.

5. Not a fan of the thread story.

6. Large complex libraries like spring often dominate the language.

7. License issues… thanks oracle…

8. Often large memory footprints

If you’re hating a language because of a group on people or vice versa perhaps you should look inwards.

vsgherzi··on Why Vanilla JavaScript
I can offer a slightly alternate prospective. At my current company we’re a small team that needs the frontend to stay stable with little changes for long periods of time. Our major react site has rotted due to us not keeping up with the Churn of the ecosystem. We don’t have a complex ui. We just need stability. Keeping up and managing a framework has been too much when we don’t have a dedicated frontend team.
vsgherzi··on GitHub cuts short offer to burn repos on CD after mockery ensues
I don't think it's that deep. It was a cool promo. I get people are sour on github rn, me too! But shitting on this certainly isn't going to fix anything.
vsgherzi··on The Unglamorous Side of Rust Web Development
A lot of this is still because rust is young. We want a competitive ecosystem so we don’t want to create victors just yet. For web id say follow things in the tokio project for the most cohesion. Tokio ORM runtime and web framework. It all works pretty well together
vsgherzi··on GitHub shouldn't be a dependency for publishing Rust on crates.io
I agree and so does the rust project. The main problem is that it's alot of work and it's hard.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGS-HqcAvA4 Here's a long video from jon gjengset that shows how it works and some of the effort already done to de-couple from github.

Crates is widely used so it's a rebuilding the track while the train is driving kind of problem.

It's just not a priority for the project right now, but I would also definitely like to see the issue done. It might be good for the rust project to vote on things like this during surveys so they know where to focus work!

vsgherzi··on NSA director: 'Mythos "broke into almost all of our classified systems in hours"
This is really making me raise an eyebrow. I’m sure mythos is an improvement for sure. I don’t think the framing of it hacked the entire NSA is fully truthful. I’d like a more in depth understanding of what actually happened. Excited to be proved wrong tho!
vsgherzi··on Newer macOS runs slower on Intel (undeniably) – on purpose or "accident"?
Nothing in dmesg? Maybe try to put some dtrace probes into the sys calls and see if anything is suspicious. Let spotlight index for a day or so first.
vsgherzi··on Newer macOS runs slower on Intel (undeniably) – on purpose or "accident"?
Tahoe seems to have slowed down the OS a bit but I don't think it is as extreme as you're seeing here. I don't have any intel chips to test with myself but personally I'd try running some benchmarks both CPU and GPU to see if your scores match up with other people running your hardware. After that maybe check to see if you're throwing errors in your console. Maybe it'll lead to a hint.

It seems like a bad bug somewhere rather than a purposeful event
