vrosas··on Google Cloud suspended my account for 2 years, only automated replies
That’s not how quotas work in GCP. Google sets quotas for certain APIs for interacting with GCP itself, like how many VMs you can create per second. They’re not billable. Sometimes these quotas can be be increased if you need them to be. But the way op described it makes no sense.
vrosas··on Google Cloud suspended my account for 2 years, only automated replies
Sure, but the comment is so vague I’m skeptical the OP knew what they were doing in the first place, or it happened exactly as they wrote. Maybe a service quota was reset to the default? But just set to zero? Doesn’t pass the sniff test.

Of all the posts like this I’ve seen the customers are always 1) extremely scant on details about what they were using GCP for or why they were suspended, and more importantly 2) never actually paying for support.

Having worked with a fair few academics, I’m guessing they lost track of their service account keys and the account got suspended for crypto mining.

Or “Why I should have been paying for support if my entire career depended on it.”
vrosas··on Google Cloud suspended my account for 2 years, only automated replies
Shitting on GCP is just popular on HN and always gets upvoted. AWS and Azure have royally fucked thousands of customers if you care to search for those writeups. My wild ass guess, considering posts like these have zero background details, is that they were careless with service account keys and their account got suspended for mining crypto or something. They also probably weren’t actually paying for support of any kind and that’s why no one is responding to them.

Quota for what? In my experience the GCP service quotas are pretty sensible and if you’re running up against them you’re either dealing with unusual levels of traffic or (more often) you’re just using that service incorrectly.
vrosas··on The future of software engineering is SRE
Every time I’ve pushed for cloud run at jobs that were on or leaning towards k8s I was looked at as a very unserious person. Like you can’t be a “real” engineer if you’re not battling yaml configs and argoCD all day (and all night).
vrosas··on Anthropic made a mistake in cutting off third-party clients
> And that means: none of them can make a profit

Well, no. It just means no single player can dominate the field in terms of profits. Anthropic is probably still losing money on subscribers, so other companies "reselling" their offering does them no good. Forcing you to use their TUI at least gives them control of how you interact with the models back. I'm guessing but since they've gone full send into the developer tooling space, their pitch to investors likely highlights the # of users on CC, not their subscriber numbers (which again, lose money). The move makes since in that respect.

I'll have claude code editing a script on my laptop and another on the VM running it and synthesizing the results. Then sometimes I'll have another doing some odd job or researching something. Then I'll pull up gemini in my browser to figure out what I should make for lunch...

FWIW firebase auth and firebase DB are two separate things, and you can use them completely separately. However "Firebase" is a PaaS so I see how it gets confusing.
vrosas··on Your Supabase is public if you turn off RLS
I asked claude to build a system that involved parsing some dates and addresses and rather than using a library it wrote hundreds of lines of regexes and term lists ('st', 'street', 'dr', 'drive', 'ave', etc) to match every test case I gave it. Lesson learned.
vrosas··on Texas is suing all of the big TV makers for spying on what you watch
OTT = over the top = ads that aren't shown on cable ("linear") DSP = demand-side platform = real-time bidding on ad space on behalf of advertisers

What data is tracked? Don't think we can see what's plugged into the TV if it's not connected to the internet but besides that... all of it... If we have your TV we know where you live. We know what you're watching (hopefully our customers' ads!). We know all the devices that connect to your home network. We know where those devices go when you leave the house. We know you were driving down this stretch of road when you saw that ad on that billboard or on the side of that truck ("out-of-home" advertising). We know if you saw that ad and then bought something ("conversion" + "attribution"). We know what apps you have downloaded. Did you know Candy Crush is spying on you, too? Did you know Grindr sells your IP address? We likely know your age and your race and how much your home cost and where you went to college and how many kids you have ("segmentation"). Privacy laws have gotten in the way a little bit, but not much - it's less "we can't get this data anymore" and more "here's the hoop(s) we now have to jump through but we still get it".

I don't want to freak anyone out. In my time in adtech I never felt like anyone was using this data for anything besides "Please buy more coca-cola..." but you never know. Privacy _can_ exist it's just insanely hard because there's so much money hell-bent on tracking you down.

My man’s not wrong. Adtech has some seriously cool engineering problems and scale. It’s its own form of high frequency trading mixed with everyone you’d imagine from a modern day Mad Men. Plus tons and tons and tons of money.
vrosas··on Texas is suing all of the big TV makers for spying on what you watch
The perils of the capitalist system man. For what’s its worth, I left adtech many moons ago specifically because it is a horrifyingly depressing industry and very very not fun to talk about at parties.
vrosas··on Texas is suing all of the big TV makers for spying on what you watch
I used to work for an OTT DSP adtech company i.e. a company that bid on TV ad spots in real time. The bidding platform was handling millions of requests per second, and we were one of the smaller fish in the sea. This system is very real. Your tv is watching what you’re watching. I built the attribution pipeline, which is what this is. If you go buy a product from one of these ads, this is how they track (attribute) it. Not to be alarmist butttt you have zero privacy.

vrosas··on Tell HN: Azure outage
Cloud Run is incredible. It’s one of those things I wish more devs knew about. Even at work where we use GCP all the “smart” devs insist on GKE for their “webscale” services that get dozens of requests a second. Dozens!

The point is to dehumanize those who oppose them, and putting someone on a sex offender registry, in jail, and hitting them with crippling debt is a sure fire way to do it, even if it’s thrown out in court later.
