vq··on The Unexpected Importance of the Trailing Slash
Every time I use one of the --delete/--delete-* arguments I first try with --dry-run since I don't trust myself that I got the trailing slashes in the right spot.
vq··on Redesigned Notepad for Windows 11
I'm sure the editor is fine for a basic editor that comes with the desktop environment, it looks functional enough, but the language in that article is just weird to me. It reads like some kind of prank.
vq··on Redesigned Notepad for Windows 11
"Productivity, performance, and reliability are paramount in Notepad. Regardless of how you incorporate Notepad into your workflows, we will ensure that Notepad continues to excel in those areas."

Is this from Microsoft? Is this real?

vq··on Index machine: an open source pick and place machine
I don't know how serious of a name collision this is, but Index is the name of a company that has a very long history[0] of making machining tools. Today they mainly make CNC lathes and mills[1].

I own a post-war era Index-25 automatic lathe and it's a marvel of mechanical engineering. They can make a modern general purpose CNC lathe look really slow by comparison. Here's some pictures[2] of a similar but younger machine that I found out there.

vq··on macOS Monterey Preview
I've used x2x[0] (released 1996) in the past. One neat thing about x2x was that it only needed to be installed on of the machines and controlled the pointer and keyboard through the X11 XTEST protocol. It was magical how well it worked.

vq··on Lotus 1-2-3 arbitrary resolution
The only one I know of is org-mode[0]. It defers calculations to calc-mode which handles units.

vq··on Some Obscure C Features
No mention of trigraphs? They are one of my favourite obscure C language features that I've never used.

Excerpt from GCC man page:

  Trigraph: ??( ??) ??< ??> ??= ??/ ??' ??! ??-
  Replacement: [ ] { } # \ ^ | ~
Missing backslash on your keyboard? No problem, just type ??/ instead.
vq··on JavaScript Getter-Setter Pyramid
I thought this was going to be about lenses implemented in JavaScript, if it was I didn't get it. The Haskell lens[1] package (which implements a type of lenses referred to as van Laarhoven lenses after their discoverer Twan van Laarhoven) builds up a hierarchy (pyramid if you will) of lenses with varying degrees of generality and power.

vq··on Emacs 26 Brings Generators and Threads
Can you use ssh/scp? Emacs is able to use that to edit files remotely. I often use it when I work with small Arm Linux boards.

vq··on The HP-35: Consumer Electronics, an Origin Story
Have you tried Calc? It's loosely modelled after the HP-calculators and it's my first choice of calculator when I have a full blown computer at my hands.

vq··on Using GnuCash as a Freelancer to Track Finances and Prepare Taxes
Sure.

It's a bit of a hack and I can't recommend anyone to actually use it. It probably contains a number of assumptions that only holds true for the SIE-files I've had to handle.

vq··on Using GnuCash as a Freelancer to Track Finances and Prepare Taxes
I'm using it in Sweden as well. I wrote a Python script to populate the accounts from a list of accounts I received from my auditor/tax consultant, as such I don't know exactly what flavour of BAS it is.

I use a letter prefix for my transaction sequence numbers and GnuCash doesn't seem to understand it or put any value in it at all. This is definitely a weak point in my eyes and I'd love to have GnuCash support categories for transactions and strict sequence numbers.

vq··on Ikea founder Ingvar Kamprad has died
IKEA is actually a köttbullar and lingonsylts (lingonberry jam) distribution system so that us Smålänningar can get our fix almost anywhere in the world.
vq··on Wikimedia Foundation spending
I have a 'w' search keyword in Firefox for Wikipedia.

"w <search phrase>" + enter takes you directly to the Wikipedia page.

vq··on Not Lisp again (2009)
If by (x y) you mean x(y) then I would write it like this:

f (x y) z

vq··on Jupyter-themes – Custom Jupyter Notebook Themes

vq··on The Riemann Hypothesis, explained
3Blue1Brown recently did a video on the Riemann zeta function: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sD0NjbwqlYw

It's not as in depth but it has some helpful visualisations that I've never seen elsewhere.

vq··on Tup – A file-based build system for Linux, OS X, and Windows
How does it handle building from LaTeX sources where you need to "rebuild" the document multiple times to get page numbers and references right?
vq··on Don’t Use Markdown for Documentation
I have a very similar process. I start of with an org document, do a couple of drafts and then pandoc to LaTeX, pull in the proper template and add the frills as you say.
vq··on Can we guess your age and income, based solely on the apps on your phone?
"You are a married guy older than 32 who makes more than $52,000/year", I am a guy, so... 1 out of 4 I guess.
vq··on Learning the Web
Not that quadrangle made that point, but a program written in point-free style could still exhibit dynamic behaviour.

Still not very constructive or relevant criticism on the page though.

vq··on Dell’s Linux PC sequel still just works, but adds 4K screen and rough edges
C-v and M-v in Emacs and friends and CTRL+b and CTRL+d in vi and clones.

EDIT: and if you were fine with reaching for PgDn then SHIFT+up, SHIFT+down in vim is probably a viable option as well.

vq··on Why Our Brains Love High Ceilings
I'm 1.95 and I almost always duck slightly when passing a door, even when there is space and no threshold. Its like a bad habit.

I'm lucky when it comes to cars, most cars I've driven has been alright when pushing the seat all the way back, if I'd been slightly taller it would've been a different story.

vq··on Web content fits better on a tall monitor
I got a similar setup, one vertical and one horizontal. I got an Emacs frame for both of them but end up doing most coding with the vertical monitor and using the horizontal one for peripheral tasks (browsing, calc-mode, reading docs, etc).
vq··on When GIFs serve JavaScript
Thanks for pointing it out, I actually thought that was the article and didn't realise my mistake until I saw your comment.
vq··on Rust for functional programmers
As a Haskell dev about to get into Rust (and appreciates occasional parallels to OCaml) I found this very insightful. I especially like the attention given to the tables of language literals.

Not that it takes away from the purpose of the post but I couldn't help but see some issues in the Haskell code.

The code under "Recursive data structures" is not valid, top-level code in a Haskell source-file isn't evaluated like in Ocaml, I'd remove the "let" keywords and put "main = " in front of the putStrLn function (which is also misspelled).

As others have mentioned, the ADT example is wrong, you need to use "data" instead of "type", and the convention for the optional type in Haskell is "data Maybe a = Nothing | Just".

  hello x =
      test x
This might be intentional, but it's very unconventional to put a newline after the equality sign in that short function.

  if v /= 1 then collatz v
            else return ()
This is better written as:

  when (v /= 1) (collatz v)
and compares better with the Rust and OCaml code.
vq··on Ask HN: Why isn't Erlang more popular?
It was even banned internally for a couple of years and Armstrong left Ericsson as a result.

I know it gets some use within Ericsson for running quickcheck tests against C-code.
