vpribish··on Httpx: A next-generation HTTP client for Python
fwiw:

I've moved to Trio over asyncio (I did plain old async for a couple years and Trio makes a ton of sense)

Quart-trio over Flask (just to get a Trio-friendly flask-a-like server) - plain old aiohttp worked really well too. It takes a bit more roll-your-own work, but you get exactly what you want.

peewee over SQLAlchemy (less committed to this change, but peewee has been fine so far and is much more streamlined) I'm mostly just using SQLite. the async version of the ORM looks pretty new, i'm not using it yet.

vpribish··on Scientists identify pathways that extend nematode worm lifespan fivefold
we're trying to have an intelligent discussion here and you bring religious garbage
vpribish··on Bio-coal: A renewable and producible fuel from lignocellulosic biomass
it takes one growing season for the rice, wheat, sugar cane, and soybean they were using.
vpribish··on A former Egyptian engineer found the secret to building a big gas-station chain
clickbait-styled headlines are repulsive
vpribish··on Airplanes and Accounting Games: The Coming Boeing Collapse?
of course it's fixable - be realistic.

It's the more a problem of increasing lift from the forward-mounted engines, not CG. Active control systems are just fine. The airframe is not inherently unstable.

armchair aerospace engineers are the worst.

vpribish··on Apocalyptic Claims About Climate Change Are Wrong
Forbes is worthless, post from another source
vpribish··on Koalas ‘Functionally Extinct’ After Australia Fires Destroy 80% of Their Habitat
forbes is shit, the headline is a lie.

vpribish··on Three of Apple and Google’s former star chip designers launch NUVIA
yeah, what the fuck. Maybe they are counting on the inevitable lawsuit to raise their profile before changing their name or something?
vpribish··on Have scientists discovered a fifth force of nature?
yeah, right - the telegraph is going to break this news to world.
vpribish··on Tunnel Boring Machines (2018)
"The cost of a TBM doesn’t get much higher as you increase its diameter."

This is the key assertion, and it is unsupported.

- heat extraction will become a bigger problem

- debris extraction too

- cost of parts, cost and speed of logistics like transport and installation of the machine will be worse

- small number of exotic large TBMs will scale worse than large number of small TBMs in manufacturing cost and operating experience

- I've seen elsewhere (citation missing) that small borers move much faster than large so any costs that scale with time will be worse.

- risk-wise: a portfolio of small borers will have less risk than an all-eggs-in-one-basket gamble. a broken part delaying a big machine incurs more cost than ona smaller machine.

unless your project requires a single enormous bore I think you would prefer to use the smallest you can get away with.

The author does not seem to have any relevant experience, so I'm not going to take this on his authority; he's a programmer who has done scheduling software on metro projects and is working on an MBA. Interesting summary of types of machines though!

vpribish··on Colossal Holograms
looks sketchy as fuck - it's a marketing piece put out by the company. Don't bother.
vpribish··on Show HN: Who Arms the World?
What a worthless site! The UI is awkward, the data very shallow, the visualization provides no insight or understanding. It all could have been a static graph. Why did you even post this, moigonz?
vpribish··on NASA Flew Gas Detectors Above California, Found ‘Super Emitters’
dude. use some critical thinking, please. a quick glance at the contents of that page shows that it is a lunatic fringe right-wing propaganda site.

"@AlGore to launch climate brainwashing campaign for students"

"Asians Better Hope It’s A Trump Win In 2020"

"Fauxcahontas must be dumber than schist"

vpribish··on Uber’s self-driving car could not detect pedestrians outside of a crosswalk
I think you are absolutely correct. and i'm disappointed again at the broader HN downvoters who lack any sense of perspective. It's like the hackers all turned into fuzzy-headed luddites here.
vpribish··on Intel publishes misleading benchmarks against AMD
feedback instead of anonymous downvotes? crazy!
vpribish··on An Electric Aviation Pioneer Who Aims to Crack the Pilot Shortage
Forbes is garbage, don't post their articles here. This is a fawning, analysis-free piece that reads like a long-form press release
vpribish··on The SpaceX Starship is a big deal
citing bad works of fiction does not help make the point
vpribish··on No one working at Newsweek can tell me why it still exists
see The Economist - they are doing great. subscription based (and not cheap), extremely high quality, multi-media (print, app, web, audio).

free news? it'll all be run by comedy organizations

vpribish··on WeWork is planning to lay off up to 25% of its employees
They were counting on a big chunk of cash from the IPO that they could use to pay the interest on their massive debts and keep expanding and developing to keep the growth/valuation story alive. This was all undone when outside investors saw the S-1 had no clothes. Those debt payments still need to happen though, and no one buys the valuation story anymore so something has to give.
vpribish··on Genetically modified mosquitoes breed in Brazil
that response doesn't mean anything. are you missing some words?
vpribish··on Michael Crichton: Why Speculate? (2005)
my goodness, yes. My background is aerospace engineering, software engineering, and finance. Here on hacker news, the software discussion is good, aerospace is terrible, and finance/investing is teeth-gnashingly, garment-rendingly hopeless. Despite this I do read lots of the health and wellness discussions - and have no idea whether they are really any good.

vpribish··on Yield Curves Invert in U.S., U.K
much worse than 2008 how? Global debt markets nearly collapsed and the single largest investment of american consumers crashed. You are making a really bold claim there and it looks like cheap catastrophizing.
vpribish··on BART slows rollout of new trains as it contends with more repairs than expected

exactly. the impact from the deal mostly happened at its announcement October 29, 2018 when IBM fell about 5% on the news.
