vpribish··on Duolingo CEO on going AI-first: 'I did not expect the blowback
wow, seems he still doesn't get it, maybe he's too wealthy to understand. (this article might actually be satire, i just realized)

exciting, bold proclamations from the techno-king might be really fun for him - but sound awfully different from out here.

In his defense, the people who he pays thought it was just fine, a great idea.

vpribish··on The time bomb in the tax code that's fueling mass tech layoffs
exactly. so this policy which was ostensibly about closing a loophole used by big tech is actually a benefit to big tech because it keeps disruptive new competitors from arising. regulatory capture strikes again.
vpribish··on Sandia turns on brain-like storage-free supercomputer
I dunno, man. strikes me as crazy persecuted-genius syndrome. red flags go up from the very start.
vpribish··on NASA Civil Space Shortfalls (2024)
Top technology needs across NASA directorates. #1 is Thermal management to survive lunar night.

final report is a linked pdf:

vpribish··on NASA delays next flight of Boeing's alternative to SpaceX Dragon
no it does not seem likely, that's nonsense. the pentagon likes the spacex product just the way it is
vpribish··on The time bomb in the tax code that's fueling mass tech layoffs
after 5 years then every year is deducting a whole year's worth of R&D - as long as that investment is not too lumpy from year to year you are back where you started
vpribish··on Why does the U.S. always run a trade deficit?
it's the New York Fed. they are not making that mistake.
vpribish··on The first year of free-threaded Python
shh. don't complain too loudly or we'll lose an important tell. python articles using snake illustrations can usually be ignored because they are not clueful.

vpribish··on Possibly a Serious Possibility
maybe something like dyslexia but for semantics. I did some searching and couldn't find a term for this.
vpribish··on I turned a 40 year old Apple Mouse into a speech to text button
same
vpribish··on Evidence of controversial Planet 9 uncovered in sky surveys taken 23 years apart
I can clearly see the object as a bright group of pixels in the IRAS image, but I don't see a damn thing at the spot they hilight in the AKARI image. Like, are they kidding or is this a crap article with the wrong image or something?
vpribish··on A Hyper-Catalan Series Solution to Polynomial Equations, and the Geode
I thought it was Hyper-Catan at first. this is cool, i guess, too.
vpribish··on The Decline of the U.S. Machine-Tool Industry and Prospects for Recovery (1994)
thank you. the catastrophizing that makes up so much of this site is such a dead-end. seems people rather engage in sensational fantasy instead of understanding. cheers
vpribish··on Tell HN: Announcing tomhow as a public moderator
Welcome! can we call you tang?
vpribish··on Tell HN: Announcing tomhow as a public moderator
same. and when I learned it was Dan G I didn't accept it entirely. now it's a sort of superposition of them - and mostly a nebulous entity that maintains civil discourse - like something from a Miyazaki movie
vpribish··on Waymos crash less than human drivers
Of course you are the best kind of correct but to instead advance the whole discussion I think we can agree that there is no trail of carnage in the wake of waymos leaving only them unscathed.

I live in sf. Waymos are far more predictable and less reckless than the meatwagons. They do not cause accidents with their occasionally odd behavior.

And to add another perspective - as a cyclist and pedestrian I put waymos even further ahead. I have had crashes due to misbehavior of cars - specifically poor lane keeping around curves - but waymos just don’t cause those sorts of problems

vpribish··on NASA Whoosh Rocket
all the concepts i've seen were horizontal landing mostly with fold-out wings
vpribish··on Oxygen discovered in most distant known galaxy
they are witches and read it in the tea leaves, i guess. i didn't read the article
vpribish··on Military grade sonic weapon is used against protesters in Serbia
you are stating this with confidence but it doesn't sound at all convincing - where are you getting this from?

aggressive crowd control measures have been used very often and they almost never result in an armed rebellion. that's just nonsense. There are many MANY levels of escalation left for both sides - as well as the real expectation of behind the scenes diplomacy and within-the-system politics.

like really, are you just fantasizing about a balkan civil war because it's exciting? or are you trying to get more people to think that civil disagreement may as well be considered warfare? just what are you on about, mate?

vpribish··on Military grade sonic weapon is used against protesters in Serbia
finally someone bringing some reason and evidence to this stupid discussion. thank you
vpribish··on Athena spacecraft declared dead after toppling over on moon
Yes, you have my permission to remind people of that - especially the poster I was responding to. The accuracy of the landing was excellent.
vpribish··on Athena spacecraft declared dead after toppling over on moon
not 'similarly structured' but the immediate sibling craft - the same design from the same company.

not "eventually toppled" but broke a leg and landed on its side right away.

Definitely the next mission will be the same craft - they have 2 more in the works.

vpribish··on Athena spacecraft declared dead after toppling over on moon
goddamn. it was 250 METERS - not miles.
vpribish··on Athena spacecraft declared dead after toppling over on moon
This is fun : Private is origin. Robotic is material
vpribish··on There Was a Texas Lottery Arbitrage
it's a tax on the hopes of the desperate and depressed.

better than leaving it to the criminal underworld, though.

vpribish··on Mark Cuban offers to fund former 18F employees
He's not a sincere person to talk to, don't waste your time.
vpribish··on Mark Cuban offers to fund former 18f employees
It absolutely is not. The article says no such thing and you show yourself as an untrustworthy participant in this discussion.
vpribish··on Mark Cuban offers to fund former 18F employees
They are also performing for a constituency who like believing that the government is their enemy. It's straight from the authoritarian playbook : claim the government is broken, get into power and break the government, replace it all with your own organization and declare victory.
vpribish··on Waste-based perovskite solar cell achieves 21.39% energy efficiency
HAHA! oh my. what a trash article this is. I read it and the whole thing. Every paragraph has a gem of nonsense, maybe it's AI tuned to the key of breathless doomer ignorance. OP, feel shame for reposting this.
vpribish··on The dream of offshore rocket launches is finally blasting off
the title is clickbait - offshore rocket launch is 8 decades old and the article knows it.

the article is a lightweight survey of some anecdotes from this long history.

ends with a vaporware pitch for a franchise business.

this is nothing

the technology review is garbage.
