vore··on To revive Portland, officials seek to ban public drug use
The problem is that the people using drugs out in public are already at rock bottom: there aren't many punishments you can use to deter that, short of putting them in jail and when they come out they're just going to be using drugs in public all over again. I'm somewhat receptive to the idea of mandatory treatment but as it stands, "enforcing some harsh laws" doesn't do anything to curb recidivism – temporarily incarcerating people falling out of the bottom of society is not a long term fix for society.
vore··on Beeper Mini is back
I know that HN is not one homogeneous opinion, but it always comes up in these Apple threads that all this device attestation and secure enclave stuff is unambiguously good because Apple does it, but when it comes to TPM key escrow or Web Environment Integrity suddenly everyone is up in arms about how it's a total violation of a user's freedoms to do what they want with their device.

You shouldn't defend something that's inherently consumer hostile just because it happens to be for something you like.

vore··on Beeper Mini is back
This is in fact the most popular HN opinion that always comes up on every Apple thread.
vore··on Air traffic controllers pushed to the brink
Would you like people to not be concerned with aircraft accidents?
vore··on Apple cuts off Beeper Mini's access
Edited.
vore··on Apple cuts off Beeper Mini's access
The repo is a proof of concept. The key provided is used for illustration purposes and worked for the proof of concept. Nobody believes Apple would not revoke that key. But you don't need to talk down to the author for their age like this when they've made clear this is a proof of concept.
vore··on Apple cuts off Beeper Mini's access
This is a private key to access Apple's service for a proof of concept. How is someone without access to an Apple device going to obtain such a key without it being distributed somehow?

Nobody is surprised that Apple is able to revoke this key, by the way.

vore··on Apple cuts off Beeper Mini's access
Because "private" here is regarding the cryptography and not regarding the disclosure? How are users supposed to obtain this key to use the service without it being published?

Isn't that what the parent comment said?
vore··on Helen Toner shares her side
The CEO is an instrument of the board. The CEO is not there to lead the board. This is just backstabbing, plain and simple.
vore··on Magicoder: Source Code Is All You Need
Does the fact someone asks you not to do something inherently make it the right thing? Especially when what they've asked is hypocritical?
vore··on [dead]
The title is absolute clickbait. The CIA funded Radio Free Asia, which then operated the Open Technology Fund until it was broken out as a separate entity.

FWIW, the Open Technology Fund also helps fund WireGuard, OpenVPN, and NoScript, among others.

vore··on Henry Kissinger Has Died
This is the most perplexing comment I've ever read.
vore··on Unity Software to cut 3.8% of staff in 'company reset'
Is that really tantamount to cutting off someone's source of income and livelihood?
vore··on Unity Software to cut 3.8% of staff in 'company reset'
Then the compensation model is inherently unfair if the rank and file is forced to bear the brunt of bad leadership.
vore··on Unity Software to cut 3.8% of staff in 'company reset'
It is your job to anticipate the market – you are responsible for all the business decisions! If you're allowed to shrug it off and say "we didn't see this coming, we did the best we can, by the way 3.8% of you are getting laid off because of this but not me, even though I made the calls", well, it sounds like you're just milking the business for yourself until it well and truly goes kaput.
vore··on US and UK Military Contractors Created Plan for Global Censorship in 2018
But of course you can clearly see through all the propaganda, unlike the rest of us, right?
vore··on That time Verisign typo-squatted all of .com and .net

If you consider Parti socialiste to be socialist then I'm literally Karl Marx.
vore··on Python Is Easy. Go Is Simple. Simple != Easy
Go doesn't really warn you if you forget to handle an error return, which in my experience continuing silently in the face of error conditions is far scarier than crashing loudly.
vore··on Cisco aids Ukraine defense with modified switches to counter Russian attacks
Cisco not only stopped but in fact never did either of those things, so they're already way ahead of you!
vore··on Cisco aids Ukraine defense with modified switches to counter Russian attacks
I think the US government would rather make Cisco stay in politics.
vore··on Can a Passenger Hack an Airplane?
I don't know about you but surely this person is definitely knowingly doing something negligent enough to constitute mens rea.
vore··on The new Paris métro
There are plenty of rubber-tired metros in Japan. The Yurikamome to Daiba in Tokyo, for example.
vore··on Breezy Version Control System
Well, at the same time, you can get yourself into funny situations that are hard to get out of without knowing the intricacies of Git (e.g. what is "detached HEAD"?). And rebasing is absolutely not easy to understand.
vore··on Breezy Version Control System
You've heard of security through obscurity, now it's time for... data integrity through obscurity...?
