vopi··on Unity is laying off hundreds of employees
I assume the poster is implying that although Unity is used in things outside of gaming, the vast majority of users and development are/is in gaming.
vopi··on Shrugs.app – A native Slack client for macOS
Maybe I'm just jaded but as someone that used to be gungho about alternative, native clients like these. I've just given in and used the official clients. I'm tired of being the person who doesn't have specific feature or w/e.

Anyone else in a similar boat?

vopi··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
Maybe creeper world?
vopi··on Comparing the C FFI overhead on various languages
.NET core doesn't exist anymore. It's now just .NET. It is the successor to the old windows only .NET. It is very much not windows only.
vopi··on If Google sucks then why is everyone still using it?
idk if you know this but kagi has a "discussion" filter (among other filters)
vopi··on Mojang to Require a Microsoft Account to Play Minecraft
I had to do that A few years ago. (Same thing, early PayPal). I had an old email attached to it I no longer had access too. I was able to email support and give them some information such as purchase date (that was frankly not super specific but was worth a shot. I'm talking very, very vague dates) and they were able to transfer the account to me.
vopi··on Vanced: YouTube adblocker for Android
I simply don't care. I don't tolerate viewing ads. I currently use sponsorblock as well. I have paid for YouTube premium at some point but I see no reason anymore. There's enough people who don't know how to block ads and frankly if it ever got to that point I expect the big G to crack down hard (technical and legal means). It's the same thing with ad blocking. I'm sorry but when you have 11 percent of my average network requests being ads I will simply block those requests. Is it selfish? Of course. I'm not claiming to "stick it too the man", I just don't wanna see your shilling. Simple as.
vopi··on Soviet Military Maps of North America and UK
The fracturing of the states is what he is referring to: "we will live forever or die by suicide".

It case you don't know, he was the president when states did fracture (US civil war).

vopi··on Tools to Download Netflix / Disney / Apple TV Content
But services limit quality on Linux (due to not having a high-enough DRM level).
vopi··on YouTube is testing people now?
Just fyi for others nonfree as in freedom, not as in beer. plus it has sponserblock built in to auto skip in-video ads.
vopi··on .NET 6 Released
The binary VScode you install is different than an open source build. Microsoft doesn't want OS builds using the same package registery and I assume various tooling iirc
vopi··on GoDaddy terminates hosting of Texas anti-abortion tip website
Is it that confusing if you read the article? It mentions the six-week timetable. I don't think many people were taking it seriously.
vopi··on VPN over SSH? The Socks Proxy
Socks Proxies are fun. I used to use SSH on a non-standard open port on GoGo inflight WiFi on American Airlines to get free inflight WiFi on continental flights. Don't know if it still works on the newer systems, but was fun and convenient.

Sidenote: does anyone know how Telegram bypasses the WiFi redirect blocks? Was considering writing a Reddit or HTTP-over-Telegram bot but it seems easier to just figure out how they are avoiding blocks.

vopi··on Prime Minister of Singapore shares his C++ code for Sudoku solver (2015)
SS: Just saw this article for the first time. I think it's interesting how the PM of Singapore apparently is (loosely) a hobbyist programmer.

Interestingly his son, Li Haoyi[0], is a well known Scala developer. From the article, "My children are in IT, two of them—both graduated from MIT. One of them browsed a book and said, 'Here, read this.'" It was a textbook on the Haskell programming language, Lee recounted. "One day that will be my retirement reading."

vopi··on The values of Emacs, the Neovim revolution, and the VSCode gorilla
I don't think its as easy imo. vscode auto recommends extensions if you open a new file type and from what I remember (been a number of years since I installed a package in emacs), the extension "browser"/"market" was not as user friendly (in terms of raw info about the extension and in discoverability).
vopi··on The CIA Rebrands with a New Website
> alt="A woman with medium-light skin and long dark hair."

Interesting. Government accessibility requirements maybe?

vopi··on ByteDance asks federal apeals court to vacate US order forcing it to sell TikTok
I'm not saying I agree or disagree, but I'm almost certain he is saying how it worked with the Soviet Union.
vopi··on Raspberry Pi 400 Desktop PC
There are easier libraries, but turtle [0] and tkinter (tcl/tk) are both included in the standard library that could be used for graphics. Turtle especially is geared towards beginners its similar to LOGO.

vopi··on Ask HN: FB suggests friends after visiting same city, don't use FB phone. How?
I suspect it's through a Bluetooth beacon. Basically analytics/trackers for physical stores.
vopi··on DirectX is coming to the Windows Subsystem for Linux
Probably because its a shim to use a proprietary (only distributed by MS) binary blob version of DirectX compiled for Linux. Outside of ML utilizing DirectX in WSL on Windows, the only group that this helps is MS.

FTR, I'm not arguing whether or not this should be upstreamed. I just see where the other poster could be coming from. I could be wrong on my take and if so, someone please correct me.

vopi··on Electron 2.0.0 beta
Uhh sublime is written in C++ with it's own custom UI the toolkit iirc. It only uses python for scripting.
vopi··on Under iOS 11, authorities won’t be able to image your device without a passcode
Yeah that's like their entire business model. They use it to sell ads, etc but they won't sell their most valuable asset.
vopi··on ProtonMail Now Supports Bitcoin Payments
I don't know much about eu laws and less of Germany. Out of curiosity if I was a Nazi could the government shot me down?
vopi··on Why We Terminated Daily Stormer
So what if no ISP wants to give them inet?
vopi··on The BitTorrent Protocol Specification v2
I love qtorrent. They even have built in torrents search for various sites like TPB and Linux isos ;)
vopi··on Luna – Visual and textual functional programming language
>standard library looks cool

What does that even mean? No offense, but like I haven't seen any demos on your website and you are describing the std lib as cool? Not exactly confidence aspiring.

It looks interesting for sure and looks really fun to mess around with (frankly has a hobbyist high school programmer who likes systems programming, I don't see a whole lot of use for me :))

Good luck.

vopi··on Why we should teach kids actual programming, not Scratch, etc.
Author here. First time posting something publicly like this so sorry for any basic mistakes. If you have any questions feel free to ask! (PS: Sorry for any grammar mistakes).
vopi··on Chrome Won
Unfortunately I wish I had that experience. Firefox crashed more than chrome and felt slower even with the multiprocessed thing. This happened on both windows 10 and x/ubuntu
vopi··on Chrome Won
Rust has a monoculture. So firefox does/will have one
vopi··on Helping a Million Developers Exit Vim
