i use a german keyboard and i like these:

alias öö=ll

alias ..='cd ..'

my exact point is: don't judge too early.

btw: the freedombox (https://www.freedomboxfoundation.org/) is one possible market from my pov

"...The police and security services are concerned that criminals and terrorists are increasingly evading detection by using social media and online gaming sites to communicate with each other..."

of course they do - because the terrorists and the criminals have the brains and the survival instinct of a peanutbutter sandwich!

"I think there is a world market for maybe five computers"

you are not the user, you are the product. but it's for free;)

yes, 20 years ago nobody could've dreamed about that.

...because many of them are probably too young to remember those ... other days:)

actually i wanted to write sth bout "once upon a time in germany" on this one, but i better pass.

these "good" and "bad" things are two nice little categories - they make thinking so much easier. i think this is the reason why i don't like this hegel guy.

very nice. laughed my ass off.

well, i sleept on that and came to the point that this problem is similar to the knife-problem: you can use a knife to butter your bread or to cut someone into little pieces - but that's not the knife's fault or the fault of the guy who made the knife or the guy who invented the concept of the knife.

therefore rms and you other smart bastards;) were right - i was wrong.

i know this all-or-nothing-argument and yes it is correct. it's about purity of the idea of free software, but killing humans is not pure. so how can the idea stay pure therefore?

and what do i tell my grandchildren if the ask me one day: "grandpa, why exactly did you write that big while-switch-statement which killed 6.000.000 people in 2016?"

asked rms few months ago if it wouldn't make sense to change the gpl in the direction of "no military use allowed". he replied that would destroy the "free software philosophy". i disagree. hate the idea that human beings are killed with the help of gnu/linux and/or free software.

hi david, you've been vanished for years! great trick. how did you do that?

so the navy uses gnu/linux to kill people or spy on them? if so, then this is one of the most horrible days in my life.

what has this militarist nonsense to do with hn?

what really got me into re in the first place was "the dragonbook" back in 1990. very good background stuff.

totally insane but looks soo cool:D

500K is embarrassing. probably the samsung corporation is spending more money per year on toilet paper.

great article! loved it. in the 80's i coined me the sentence "never write software for cruise missiles!". that was harder than i imagined then. today it's the same with AI, ML and even data mining. ethically very though stuff for responsible software developers. anyway, thnx for the article.

grep and in general regex mean survival.

i have to admit that in my early unix years i did not understand (the power of) grep until i learnt perl. funny, isn't it?

if this info is correct then it's an outrage. control lost or not.

indeed.

keep her!

jsb simply rocks

nice, foss wins:)

no, of course not! it's about the climate.

curious already.

in plain english gnu/linux is a divider. it divides the world into those people who will be under permanent spying and surveillance from the marketing industry, the software industry and the gov and those who wont. if you care bout that "desktop flop" isn't an issue at all, if you don't - well, your choice. the important question is: depending on your choice, are you "evolving" in the right "information-age-survival-direction" or don't you?
