voodoo_child··on 118M Queries per Second on Neki
> Worth being clear about this run: the shards were primary-only with no replicas, the workload is read-only across queries ranging in complexity, and we did not fail over during the measured window.

No HA either, or backups I assume.(single AZ?)

But think the point of it was not to benchmark PostgreSQL but to demonstrate the linear scalability of the shared-nothing/stateless routing architecture. I think this was already known from Vitess though, which shares the same architecture. Also, as part of a new product release benchmarking shit like this internally is cool/interesting, why not blog about it.

The more cynical side of me says it was a money burning exercise to give the marketing team a number to tweet about. :)

voodoo_child··on NASA Force
If I’m not misunderstanding; Its not a complex project, and allows them bootstrap a recruitment campaign fast to take advantage of Artemis hype. I don’t understand why being vibe coded or reusing/recycling other designs matters?
voodoo_child··on JSON formatter Chrome plugin now closed and injecting adware
Big-JSON is coming for us
voodoo_child··on How NASA built Artemis II’s fault-tolerant computer
Nice “well, actually”. I’m sure Lockheed were building this quad-redundant, radiation-hardened PowerPC that costs millions of dollars and communicates via Time-Triggered Ethernet anyway, whether NASA needed one or not.
voodoo_child··on Amazon closing its Fresh and Go stores
Same. Bummed about Amazon one palm, I use it all the time.
voodoo_child··on Plastic bag bans and fees reduce harmful bag litter on shorelines
Same. They’ve recently brought CRV charges into Ireland and almost every supermarket has a machine you can get your refund, so much more convenient. I’ve only noticed one of these near me in the Bay Area, and it’s almost always out of order or has queues of people waiting.

With over $800m in unclaimed CRVs[1], I’d wonder what kind of motivation there is to actually improve the service over “pocketing” the money. [1] https://www.kpbs.org/news/environment/2024/06/20/californias...

voodoo_child··on Enhancing MySQL: MySQL improvement project
One of the big problems is Oracle decide what does/doesn’t go in. Understandable, but they provide no insight into the decision making process, why patches don’t get merged, or even if/when they take it. They used to post worklogs for features they were working on which gave some insights, but they’ve stopped doing that now too. Imagine working on a new feature for months, submitting a patch only to find out oracle have went their own route, many people will just say what’s the point. Last updated work log was in 2021: https://dev.mysql.com/worklog/

Edit: As an example, one of the optimizations called out in this repo was submitted in October 2023. “Thank you for the report and contribution.” and then radio silence ever since.
