volkse··on DeepSeek services down due to claimed malicious attack
Has there been articulation on what sort of attacks and by whom?
volkse··on LA wildfires force thousands to evacuate, NASA JPL closed
You have your units mixed up - Iran record is two orders if magnitude lower than in LA (30% vs 0.3%)
volkse··on Simulating Wind on Procedural Terrain Using Lattice Boltzmann Method
There is a youtube series with a coder doing this sort of thing that is absolutely amazing: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eaXk97ujbPQ
volkse··on Building a house in California is not a housing development project [pdf]
They should apply to build a huge 5 story apartment complex on that lot, see how the community likes that. The county would have to approve that development according to that decision..
volkse··on Queen Elizabeth II has died
The preservation of traditional institutions (like monarchy) does not have a direct influence on HDI. Both high HDI scores and the fact that traditional institutions (no matter how expensive) are preserved has to do with long sustained periods of political stability, physical security and as a result, economic prosperity.
volkse··on StemRoller – Isolate vocals, drums, bass, and other stems from any song
Is there a VST front end?
volkse··on The golden age of the aging actor
Tied to the average age of the moviegoing public? Maybe millennials are too broke to pander to..
volkse··on Crypto is an unproductive bubble
I can’t understand how anyone has any confidence in crypto after the current Ukraine/Russia situation. I thought that crypto was decentralized and no-one could place restrictions on who could own it, and what they could do with it.

This also turned out to be total BS as Russian crypto accounts keep getting frozen. Funnily enough, I haven’t heard the “crypto community” make a single peep about this. Hilarious..

volkse··on Adblocking people and non-adblocking people experience a different web
Apple news, youtube, netflix, disney+hulu+hbo, and amazon prime.

All of this together is more than enough content to satisfy a lot of tastes in my opinion. And you wont have to look at a single ad

volkse··on Tech Won’t Save Us. Shrinking Consumption Will
No one is going to reduce consumption. To even suggest such a thing as a solution to any issue at any meaningful scale betrays a complete misunderstanding of the world by the author..
volkse··on South Africa’s omicron coronavirus outbreak subsides as fast as it grew
It has been discussed many times before - the issue with the SA data is that 80% of the population have been exposed to the virus (either had it or have been vaccinated) so the deaths not budging there can be very misleading for countries with lower vaccination rates.
volkse··on Chuck Feeney Is Now Officially Broke
> The encouragement of spending reduces national wealth and thereby the flow of aggregate taxable income. These indirect effects mean that eliminating the tax is likely to increase rather than decrease the net revenue yield to the federal government.

Very arguable claims there - more “trickle down” economics I guess. The main argument against the estate tax made by this letter is not “moral” as it claims, it is that few actually pay the estate tax - so how about we close those loopholes?

volkse··on AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine study put on hold due to suspected adverse reaction
The russian vaccine is also based on adenovirus vectors. Not clear if the method of delivery is to be blamed here, but it could be the cause for the adverse effects..
volkse··on PandaDoc employees arrested in Belarus after founders protest against violence
It completely boggles my mind that comments like these don’t get any pushback on HN. This insinuation that every citizen should own firearms just in case the state goes rouge is militant, irresponsible, and hilariously naive. A bunch of armchair freedom fighters who have no idea of the consequences of war think that their shiny “tactical” AR15 is going to stop a tank..

Let me ask you a direct question. Are you advocating for a full on civil war in Belarus in the middle of Europe? If a Belorussian read your comment, got a gun and killed a bunch of policemen/government supporters/Russians would you be content?

Don’t take this as a personal attack. I just think comments like yours are irresponsible given that the people of Belarus themselves chose the path of nonviolent resistance and protest - maybe they don’t want their country to end up like Ukraine or Syria.

What is worse, is that if someone insinuated on this site that for example people in the US should buy guns and start shooting policemen when they think that the police are oppressing them all kinds of voices would drum up and shut that down. I guess inciting violence in one of those “shithole countries” is ok, but god forbid if that kind of stuff happens in your own country.

volkse··on Chicago Police Department shuts down its arrest API
The issue here isn’t that police unions exist - they can exist and protect the rights of their members without influencing policymaking. The issue is that public policy can be influenced by any special interest group with deep pockets.
volkse··on Analysis of dev agencies with hourly rates, team size and tech stack
This is not the way to look at it. Software engineering and content writing are not even close to being similar in any sense. You don’t need cultural context to write good software
volkse··on How an Alzheimer’s ‘cabal’ thwarted progress toward a cure
The title isn’t “pure clickbait” although a little hyperbolic. I worked in a research laboratory in a top medical school in the US. The professor in charge of the lab was an amyloid sceptic, and the existence of this sort of “cabal” was apparent, at least to him. Words like “delusional” were thrown around. This was 7 years ago!

Also, considering the actual harm caused, i don’t think you can be hyperbolic enough about this issue..
