We've been enjoying this on and off. It takes a while to understand and the controls aren't intuitive... And i think we've thrown away a sword or fishing rod but accident... Unclear
voicedYoda··on Re-Thinking Electronic Mail
I've been using this for years. IIRC it's called "chaining". Unfortunately I've come across many sites that don't recognize, or allow, the + character in their input field. For those sites i can still crates either a group email from my Gmail, or just add another alias.

Most of the time they don't care. They've got 4 million email addresses, they'll just spam all of them.
voicedYoda··on Some auto insurers are sending refunds to customers as crash rate falls
Spot on. I've worked in P&C and life/ health insurance, and really wish states would regulate life/health like they do for P&C.
voicedYoda··on Federal Agencies Need to Address Aging Legacy Systems (2016) [pdf]
As a technologist whose built for both private and public, I'm always amazed at how little a contact can be for the public sector to purchase, only to realize that the price tag did not reflect the true cost. Government usually will go with the lowest bidder, but that project always will balloon way beyond expectations. They could've easily built in house, but that would've cost too much up front... It's easier to get a yes on a cheap, long tail expensive project then a yes on an extensive short term project...

My mbp is 9 years old and still doing relatively well, however it's nearing it's end of life and my replacement of choice is system 76. MS is an ok alternative, but unnecessary. And osx no longer innovates. They just hoard and protect their own interests.

voicedYoda··on OBS Studio: Open-source software for video recording and live streaming
No joke, i was working with colleagues just yesterday on real time closed captioning, and started googling for a few ideas for Google's cloud speech recognition API. OBS was the first few hits, so i started learning all about this amazing tool just yesterday.

Recently i was promoted to refresh my ff settings, and upon restarting, all my settings and plugins were set back up 0. Not a pleasant experience rebuilding my ff instance, but i guess it's better now than before.

Facebook has absolutely no reason to be doing work with healthcare. Sure they have great computing power and top engineering talent to figure out how to sell more ads, but the trade-off for any educational facility to freely hand over medical data (de-identified or not) is wreckless.
voicedYoda··on FDA clears ‘world’s first’ portable, low-cost MRI
This is not technical nor attempting to be glib.

I've been to the RSNA, am involved in healthcare software in the USA, and seeing what companies like Phillips, GE, et al, spend on floor space at this conference, it seems difficult to imagine these companies yielding their market position for cheaper machines to reduce costs. MRI equipment is huge business (these companies don't bat an eye spending $1,000,000+ for a conference such as the RSNA because this is where they wine and dine and make every hospital exec feel "special" so when it comes time to buy x MRIs, the sale alone will pay back the conference cost 10 fold. These conferences are expensive. The sales pipe is long (and thus expensive).

There may be companies creating and selling these, but the heavyweights don't like losing a market opportunity in "their" hospitals. I'd be very reticent to think there will ever be lower costs in the ER for offering said device/service.

Please don't get me wrong, I'm excited for limited use machines that can provide the basic information needed at a fraction of the price. I'm very leery of US healthcare institutions making a rational, patient-friendly cost conscious decision.

voicedYoda··on I found a WhatsApp security flaw that allowed hackers to read the file system
I'm strongly opposed to apps that are just wrappers for web services. I don't need a wrapper when i could just open a browser i trust patches their vulnerabilities (nod to Firefox). Every electron app eats so much RAM, it's stupid. And in the end, I'm just using a browser making API calls, why do i need the wrapper?

I'm in healthcare software, worked for epic, and now am trying to solve part of the problem. If love to learn more about what you think are the 4 corners thar need to be solved.

Don't come to the Midwest... Rural towns are full of folks who love to mod their trucks so they can be seen/heard/smelled.

voicedYoda··on Spleeter: Extract voice, piano, drums, etc. from any music track
I did come across the person who did a similar project (automating instruments based on previously recorded music), however in one project that was playing live instruments from an NES, the signals were already separated. That said, I'm not following the context of your response to my post.
voicedYoda··on Spleeter: Extract voice, piano, drums, etc. from any music track
I gave a talk at pycon this year about dsp [1], specifically some of the complexities surrounding this. I came across a few other ml projects that claimed to do this as well, and the biggest hold up is getting enough properly trained data, tagged appropriately, in order to let the models train correctly. in the git repo of this project they also explicitly state you need to train on your own data set, though you can use their models of your like. YMMV. I will love to try this out, as it's definitely a complex bit of audio engineering. That said, i loved learning everything i did preparing for my talk and need to finish up some other parts of the project to get the jukebox working... Maybe this will help :)

voicedYoda··on When a rewrite isn’t: rebuilding Slack on the desktop
For over a year i was running 5+ Slacks in the Electron app, and continuously noticed how much memory was being hogged up. After some basic research, I realized that Electron is basically a wrapper of a Chrome instance. Suddenly i understood where my ram was disappearing to because so many "native" apps running in Electron were literally just spawning new chrome instances and gobbling up ram.

I now do my best to keep my website apps running just in Firefox containers.

Electron feels like the last rush of "write once, deploy everywhere" days of flash and Adobe air. God save us all.

I think, though the cost is there, PyCon is amazingly accepting and welcoming. Yes, it isn't cheap, and cost is higher than FOSDEM, but it's one of the best conferences I've been to.
