voicedYoda··on Ask HN: Why isn't Phoenix/Elixir more mainstream?
> 3. Have to figure things out yourself (usually read from docs or source code)

If you're all alone, there are still tons of guides, books, blog posts, et al. Documentation is a first class citizen in Elixir, and theresIf you're on a good team, they'll get you resources. If you're on a bad team? {shrug}

voicedYoda··on Ask HN: Why isn't Phoenix/Elixir more mainstream?
Regarding #1, as someone with managerial experience, I'm really tired of hearing, "We can't find enough Elixir resources".

That's a cop out excuse. On the Discord, Slack, and Elixir forums, there are hundreds, if not thousands of devs looking for work.

Often it is lamented that nobody can find enough Elixir engineers, but they also seem to have a very hidden agenda here. Executives just want the job done, and Elixir can do it, but all too often the trope of not finding enough resources is lauded about as a reason to stick to LANGUAGE_MANAGE_HEARS_ABOUT_MOST (Python, JS, RoR, et al).

Everyone also only wants Super-senior-staff-principal engineers for Elixir roles, with 20 years experience, and can live code a project to perfection in 3 hours. Maybe realize that as the community grows and engineers adopt to the language, it's ok to bring in early-careerist resources, or others who just are getting started out. Give them a book, some assistance, and keep working with them, and it doesn't matter who knows it at first, in 6 months you'll have a rockstar team.

voicedYoda··on Why do shared hospital rooms not violate HIPAA?
One of the interesting rules of HIPAA is that if it starts analog, it doesn't have to conform to encryption technologies, i.e. phone calls and fax machines don't require the complexities a digital system, like an electronic medical record, require.

When HIPAA was created, a large impetus was getting large health systems onto electronic records. Portability and accountability reigned high. And there's a lot of information and misinformation about this.

Attorney general letters help clarify a lot of it.

But sharing a hospital room doesn't violate anything related to HIPAA because that isn't what the law protects.

voicedYoda··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2023)
How condescending. Whether you love this job or not, there seems to be valid criticism about your hiring process. Instead of responding with empathy and concern, the glib responses are a turn off on their own. Are you setting a good corporate example in treating candidates this way? Is this representative of your work culture?

voicedYoda··on Emacs 29.1
Every single time i open up the tutorials on how to learn emacs, a million other priorities come along. I know there are die hard fans of it, and I'd love to learn it, but with VSCode, vi, tmux, and all the MacOS tools i know, I'm not sure I'll get around to learning it before i burn out completely from engineering
voicedYoda··on What my musical instruments have taught me
Ah, right, i was thinking the column back 1st row (what i get for having insomnia and typing without thinking). I sit corrected
voicedYoda··on What my musical instruments have taught me
For accordions, my experience is there are 5-7 rows (each manufacturer varies) per column. The first row is actually the minor 6th (a 3rd below) the second row, which is the note the column is based on.

The following rows in the column are usually a minor, major, minute 7th, major 7th, then sometimes augmented or diminished or MM7.

The root note on the 2nd row is arranged in a circle of 5ths, usually the middle corresponds to middle C (denoted by an indentation)

This is my experience with the LHS of piano keyboards.

I'm mod of a medium sized group (10k+), and not because i wanted it. I simply asked the mods why someone was being ignored, so they made me one...i don't go back with enough frequency to handle all situations, but as everyone else is asleep at the wheel, I've done what i can to make sure the group doesn't get bombarded with crap posts.

It is very thankless, but i do think it's neat what tools reddit tried to give us.

Just my .02

voicedYoda··on NYC skyscrapers sit vacant
Bloomberg is writing these articles about every big city. These old buildings are the workforce of yesteryear, but so much money is invested in these monoliths, and the audience Bloomberg writes at wants to know about their money, thus we get articles lamenting the fact that these big, expensive buildings are vacant, and if we can't force workers back into them, there will be catastrophic repercussions
voicedYoda··on Erlang/OTP 26 Highlights
These updates are quite nice. Autocomplete, SSL, map comprehensions, all look really great!

I know a lot of the comments are about the awesomeness, or how hard it is to build teams, but honestly, the language is great.

When i learned about :ets and could move data around at lightening speed without having to use a database, i was in love!

voicedYoda··on Americans are returning to cities after remote-work exodus, data shows
I live in a big city in the USA, and i truly hate being forced into an office. I have tons of outside activities, hobbies, community involvements, and commuting is a waste of time to be in someone else's environment, getting constantly interrupted, not having the ergonomics I've spent decades learning to have, and enabling my context switching when necessary.

I'm fine with the occasional on site collaboration and camaraderie are fine, but every week? No. I'm productive because I'm a professional.
