vnglst··on Ask HN: To those who became fluent in a second language, what did you do?
And don't forget:

5) Go out and talk to people that speak the language (don't be afraid to make mistakes)

6) Or, if 5) is not an option, watch television shows in that language. Can be anything you like, simple comedy works best for me.

vnglst··on Canonical releases Ubuntu 16.10
I always thought it's mostly used on the server. It's my go to dist on Digital Ocean for instance.
vnglst··on Google Noto Fonts
How is this worth it for Google? Honest question, always wondered what Google gets out Google Fonts.
vnglst··on Google’s Neural Machine Translation System
Yeah, that makes more sense! Thanks.
vnglst··on Google’s Neural Machine Translation System
"Using a human side-by-side evaluation on a set of isolated simple sentences, it reduces translation errors by an average of 60% compared to Google's phrase-based production system."

Does this mean that after checking the translation by a human it becomes 60% better than the phrase-based production system? (by which they presumably mean Google Translate...?). That seems rather disappointing.

vnglst··on HttpStat: It's like curl -v, with colours
Where's the JavaScript version? ;)
vnglst··on Ask HN: Current state of cellular automata research?
Great question, I've been wondering about this too with all the attention for AI lately.
vnglst··on The man behind the million dollar homepage 11 years later
Twitter is pretty strict when it comes to bots and apparently they didn't like Terence's behavior(automatic following, lots of similar replies) and his tweets were no longer showing up in peoples timelines (replies).
vnglst··on The man behind the million dollar homepage 11 years later
Thanks, I appreciate it!! They're a lot of fun to create as well, you never know how people are going to interact with them.

And I really hope that some day Terence's campaign really takes off without me really noticing it.

vnglst··on The man behind the million dollar homepage 11 years later
I had a similar "dumb" 1 million dollar idea, but with a emoji money and a Twitter bot called Terence: https://twitter.com/helpterence

Sofar he has raised almost 8000, but I'm also looking for a way to get it out there!

vnglst··on Show HN: A minimalistic cloud provider
Can I use it in Europe?
vnglst··on Show HN: A minimalistic cloud provider
How is this different from Digital Ocean?

vnglst··on 5 Reasons Why You Should Be Using Promises
Nice writeup, thanks for sharing!

I think .then((path) => { return fs.readFileAsync(path) }) should be written as.then(fs.readFileAsync). Wrapping a function in an anonymous function doesn't really add anything - even with nice arrow notation ;-).

Dr. Boolean wrote a nice piece on this practice in Javascript: https://drboolean.gitbooks.io/mostly-adequate-guide/content/...

vnglst··on A webpack boilerplate for a production-ready marketing website
Or use surge.sh $ npm install --global surge $ surge done!
vnglst··on The Complete Guide to HTTP/2 with HAProxy and Nginx
+1, I love the simplicity of Caddy Server! Just a few lines of configuration and you've got a reverse proxy with SSL.
vnglst··on Nokia Agrees to Buy Alcatel-Lucent for $16.6B
Right, that makes sense! And the Alcatel that Nokia is buying here, is much more than a producer of phones.
vnglst··on Nokia Agrees to Buy Alcatel-Lucent for $16.6B
I don't really understand how this works. Microsoft bought Nokia for about $7B[1] and now Nokia pays more than twice that amount for Alcatel? Where is this money coming from and why is Alcatel worth so much more?

vnglst··on Germany's trade surplus is a problem
It's not in ruins, but Germany's highways are definitely not as good as they used to be. Especially if you compare them to the roads in France or The Netherlands, for instance. The internet infrastructure in Germany needs work as well: It currently ranks below Russia and Hungary, far below countries like Sweden, Netherlands and the US.

vnglst··on Pledge to master coding or mentor another developer
Agreed, but maybe this was due to the problems with the DNS servers? I managed to post my pledge and post it on Hackernews, but after that the site was unreachable...
vnglst··on Show HN: InvoiceAtOnce – Easy Invoice Creation
Well done! I've meaning to create this myself. I see you also used Angular. What did you use for the PDF creation?
