vmurthy··on Using the 5S Principle in Coding
It maybe that this works for you individually, but does it work well as part of a team? I think it's one of those cases where one needs to do what is convenient for most of the team rather than one member?
vmurthy··on A16Z blogs are just glorified marketing
I'd argue that if you are really interested, you can follow a few academics and read up on their papers etc. Of course, that's a big undertaking but it's the only alternative I can think of given the incentives for pushing shit at us
vmurthy··on Expedia to Eliminate 1,500 Jobs as Travel Growth Moderates
> I mean, once people finish the work that needs to be done, and if there isn't any more work to be done... those people get let go

Except , companies tend to hire and fire rather periodically which is a huge waste in terms of "lead time" (it takes an employee x months to be productive) not to mention demoralizing to employees. The alternative seems to be to have better planning or a decent enough roadmap rather than cater to the whims of Wall St ?

vmurthy··on Show HN: Supermaven, the first code completion tool with 300k token context
I can understand the business imperatives (I am a PM at a start-up :)), but can you please make a decision on actually having the sign up flow work without friction (Think Slack / dropbox etc). You can always iterate and find the right thing to charge for but developers are a demanding bunch especially with tooling!
vmurthy··on Ask HN: Software Engineer Certifications That Mean Something?
Does your org have teams for InfoSec? Something tangential like Offensive Security[0] certs might help portray interests beyond your core work but not too far removed either :) . Plus the certs are really really good as per people who work in InfoSec

vmurthy··on Nobel Prize winner Gregg Semenza tallies tenth retraction (2023)
But Moniz's case isn’t a case of fraud , no? I’m not insinuating this case is fraud fyi
vmurthy··on Nobel Prize winner Gregg Semenza tallies tenth retraction (2023)
One has to wonder if the Nobel prize was a mistake. Even if it was, no , a Nobel prize can't be revoked as per this[0]

vmurthy··on The QA Tester's Mentality
I was hoping to learn the tricks and tips of the trade ( QA) but the article deals with someone's experience as a QA in gaming. Good read , though , in case you are in interested in anecdotes etc :).

vmurthy··on Nassim Taleb Says US Faces a 'Death Spiral' of Swelling Debt
There's a lot of difference between not getting along well with each other and not trading .

"From 2015 to 2022, India-China bilateral trade grew by 90.14%, an average yearly growth of 12.87%. In 2022, the overall trade with China increased by 8.47% year on year to reach USD 136.26 billion, crossing the USD 100 billion mark for a second time in a row. The trade deficit came at USD 101.28 billion as India’s imports from China witnessed an increase by 118.77% to reach USD 118.77 billion, meanwhile India’s exports to China decreased by 37.59% year on year to reach USD 17.49 billion, down for last year’s net exports of USD 28.03 billion" [0]

vmurthy··on Work hard and take everything seriously
Hmm. Something strange. When I open the link in a new tab, I see the article but just clicking it in the same tab redirects to Google. I’m on iOS safari fyi
vmurthy··on Proposed top-level domain string for private use: ".internal"
From the article

“ICANN has picked the TLD string that it will recommend for safe use behind corporate firewalls on the basis that it will never, ever be delegated.

The string is .internal, and the choice is now open for public comment”

Saved you a click :)

vmurthy··on Arno A. Penzias, 90, Dies; Nobel Physicist Confirmed Big Bang Theory
Not to take away anything from Mr Penzias but here’s how I remember his name :-)

“Although Penzias and Wilson had not been looking for cosmic background radiation, didn’t know what it was when they had found it, and hadn’t described or interpreted its character in any paper, they received the 1978 Nobel Prize in physics. The Princeton researchers got only sympathy. According to Dennis Overbye in Lonely Hearts of the Cosmos, neither Penzias nor Wilson altogether understood the significance of what they had found until they read about it in the New York Times”

- Bill Bryson, A Short History of Nearly Everything

RIP Mr Penzias

Hey Jeff. Big fan of your channel :-).

> What is the difference between a "homelab" and a "creator"?

lol. I meant it a bit tongue-in-cheek. A homelabber is someone who isn’t interested in showing off his/her videos of homelabbing. A creator is :-P

vmurthy··on [dead]
From wikipedia [0]

"John Lorimer Campbell is an English YouTuber and retired nurse educator known for his videos about the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially, the videos received praise, but they later veered into misinformation.[2] He has been criticised for suggesting COVID-19 deaths have been over-counted, repeating false claims about the use of ivermectin as a COVID-19 treatment, and providing misleading commentary about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines (emphasis mine). As of June 2023, his YouTube channel had 2.8 million subscribers and over 653 million views"

vmurthy··on OpenWrt One/AP-24.XY: new open source router board by OpenWrt and Banana Pi
Looks like decent specs for a homelab (although not for "creators" :-P)

  SoC – MediaTek MT7981B (Filogic 820) dual-core Cortex-A53 processor @ 1.3 GHz

  *Networking*

  - 2.5GbE RJ45 port

  - Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 port

  - Dual-band WiFI 6 via MediaTek MT7976C (2×2 2.4 GHz + 3×3/2×2 + zero-wait DFS 5Ghz)

  - 3x MMCX antenna connectors

From TFA

"The router’s specifications have been selected with the goal of keeping the price under $100, and that’s why we have interfaces such as USB 2.0 instead of USB 3.0 since there aren’t any spare ones in the Filogic 820 SoC"

vmurthy··on Paper Sizes and Formats
I like this paragraph from the article. Sort of first principles approach to the whole thing :)

"The basis for the whole system is the A0 format which has an area of one square meter. With an aspect ratio equal to the square root of two, a sheet of A0 paper ends up being 841 × 1189 millimeters. Figuring out the dimensions of the subsequent paper sizes does not require any real mathematical strain since each ensuing size can be created by simply folding the paper in half with the crease parallel to the shortest sides. If you do this with an A0 sheet of paper, the resulting dimensions will be 594 × 841 millimeters, or the A1 format. Take note that the height of A1 is equal to the width of A0"

vmurthy··on Network Science by Albert-László Barabási
I’ve read part of his other book - “The Equation”. Good book and touches on the importance of “networks” in fields like art where you can’t measure quality. Should pick this one up.

On the contrary - don’t you think the message this sends will make things better re other chemical products? Either the manufacturers themselves will find better versions of dangerous chemicals or the users will wake up.

vmurthy··on Planka – Free, Open Source, Trello Alternative
I tried it on my local server using `docker` . Pretty neat solution! Need a bit of tweaking to get it to accept connections from machines on the same network but works overall :) .
vmurthy··on The economics of all-you-can-eat buffets (2020)
Didn’t see anyone mention Indian buffets in India. In my hometown of Bengaluru , many restaurants offer buffets. Weightage is given to starters ( I’m vegetarian so I tend to eat paneer ones ). Desserts are a few Indian sweets and lots of cheap ice cream which seems in line with the economics mentioned. If you eat protein heavy starters it’s unlikely you’ll want to have more food for mains.
vmurthy··on Ask HN: Best monitor for a MacBook Pro for ~US$700?
Personal experience has been great with Dell 27 4K UHD Monitor - S2721QS [0]. Similar workload to you although I am not a developer . Cost about 300 AUD. There's a USB-C one , too for about 700 SGD [1]

So I went down the rabbit hole of going to the website. Guess what happens when you click the book link? "Your server is running PHP version 5.6.40 but WordPress 6.3.2 requires at least 7.0.0" [0]. Not sure how this fell through.

vmurthy··on Namma Yatri – How open source is building inclusion, fairness in India
For the uninitiated, namma yatri is built on an open platform ONDC[0] (which itself is supported by the Govt of India) . There are parallels between ONDC and UPI. UPI has made inroads by removing Visa/Mastercard fees for merchants. With Namma Yatri (and by extension ONDC), the aim is to remove/reduce dependence on Uber/Ola so that the service providers (cab drivers) get more revenue and presumably commuters get lower prices.

A bit of anecdata: I booked an Uber back in Bengaluru a month ago. the driver was on Namma Yatri as well. I asked how things were. He said he's making more on Uber because of incentives. I presume Uber incentives are powered by IPO/VC money. Interesting to see how this will play out once Uber decides to stop burning money

vmurthy··on Ask HN: Do you use food as a performance enhancing drug when coding?
Believe it or not, having a very light stomach gives a big boost to energy levels and alertness. On the inevitable days I feel very dull (mostly afternoons) I follow yoga nidra practises for about 20 minutes ( it’s on YouTube. Pick any ) . It’s also called NSDR ( non sleep deep relaxation ) if you’re a fan of Huberman
vmurthy··on The IKEA-powered homelab on a wall
I do have a concern with this. From the post it appears that this is zip-tied. How long can zip ties last with such weight? I’m afraid that it’ll fall down and cause havoc if I ever attempt a thing like this. Even with sff pcs
