vmchale··on Ode to a Streaming ByteString
> it becomes easier to shoot yourself in the foot (which is mentioned in the alternative title, but doesn't seem to be expanded on much) -- say, by closing a Handle

lazy I/O (such as file reads) is suspect and even bad, but laziness + IO (or something like it) is a great way to stream from an API: http://blog.vmchale.com/article/lazy-io

Makes it possible to transcode for one. Basically makes streaming "compose" nicely - bzip2 and lzip otherwise have very different ways of streaming! And one would have to line a lot of things up.

vmchale··on California is shutting down its last nuclear plant
I'm pretty sure big oil supports solar/wind because they take the shine away from nuclear.
vmchale··on California is shutting down its last nuclear plant
The pro-blackout crowd lol.
vmchale··on Elm at Rakuten
Yeah if anything the need to constantly fork the compiler indicates a problem lol.
vmchale··on M1 MacBook Users Say Their Screens Are Cracking for “No Apparent Reason”
> I’d say it’s a pretty safe bet that some of these “reports” are from users who shut their MacBook screen onto a keyboard with a bunch of Doritos crumbs stuck in it.

imagine your Apple screen breaks and then some tech journalist calls you fat and gross for no reason ??

vmchale··on Crafting Interpreters is available in print
Between

A) Being implemented in Java

and

B) Not having anything satisfying on types

I can't get excited about it. I know it's an uncommon opinion but there's so much missing it can't be a monograph/treatise.

vmchale··on How AstraZeneca threw away its shot
I feel bad for the Oxford people.
vmchale··on Israel data reportedly shows efficacy drop of Pfizer-BioNTech for delta variant
This notably contradicts data by PHE (Public Health England), which was published.
vmchale··on The free lunch is over: a fundamental turn toward concurrency in software (2005)
> More parallel CPUs need higher skilled devs working slower to utilize the chip's full potential.

Parallelism isn't so bad, you can use a functional style a lot of the time! E.g. Futhark, the accelerate framework, APLs....

vmchale··on Silice: A language for hardcoding Algorithms into FPGA hardware
Is the name a pun on 'cilice?' :p
vmchale··on Old-school computing: when your lab PC is ancient

Or lzip! Has better recoverability properties: lzip.org

vmchale··on Amazon acquires MGM for $8.5B
Lots of opportunities for vertical integration, given their cloud (doesn't netflix rely on them?)
vmchale··on Amazon acquires MGM for $8.5B
Makes sense I guess. That goes deeper than I thought!
vmchale··on Monads Schmonads: Functional Input Without Tears (PYFL)
> Haskell uses the seriously complex machinery of monads to do I/O, supposedly without side effects (I don’t accept this).

Seems like the author doesn't understand what's going on.

vmchale··on More sleep or more exercise: the best time trade-offs for children’s health
Where I grew up they staggered schedules for middle school/elementary school/high school so that the buses would be busy all day. So high school started early.
vmchale··on Wisconsin has negotiated a dramatically scaled-back deal with Foxconn
In this case because Scott Walker lost re-election.
vmchale··on Dvtm: A dynamic tiling window manager for the terminal
I get this by default from XMonad though? And I can tile terminals and other things alongside.
vmchale··on AMD and Xilinx Stockholders Overwhelmingly Approve AMD’s Acquisition of Xilinx
clash? I like their mailing list :)

vmchale··on Clio: A functional, distributed programming language that compiles to JavaScript
It sounds way too slow too.
vmchale··on Why asynchronous Rust doesn't work
> The article brings up the legitimate awkwardness of passing functions/closures around in Rust.

That's a hard problem when you have linear/affine types! Closures don't work so neatly as in Haskell; currying has to be different.

vmchale··on Why asynchronous Rust doesn't work
>Before, the function we passed to do_work_and_then was pure: it didn’t have any associated data, so you could just pass it around as a function pointer (fn(i32)) and all was grand. However, this new function in that last example is a closure

Those are different things! Anything pure (i.e. returns same output) could still require a closure if it captures heap-allocated data - which in Rust would entail free-ing and transferring ownership and all that.

vmchale··on Show HN: I made a tool to convert images of tables to CSV
That's pretty neat.
vmchale··on Debian Running on Rust Coreutils
fd is better IMO, plus it is more cross-platform. Same flags on Linux and Mac
vmchale··on NIH will invest $1B to investigate 'long Covid'
> I've been very dismayed at the non-existent data between "dead" and "not dead".

Feels like we went with the Chinese "it lasts for two weeks or you die" that doctors discovered like 1-2 months in.

vmchale··on NIH will invest $1B to investigate 'long Covid'
Honestly, this is probably more cost-effective than letting it degrade QoL for so many people.

This is going to be a huge issue as the disease proper fades away.

vmchale··on Some Were Meant For C (2017) [pdf]
> safe languages are more useful on complex projects that in simple projects, but complex projects suffer more from performance degradation

I don't think that's true. C is often slower than C++ because of how inlining works, plus some domains (e.g. compilers) it's best to just use a GC language from the get-go.

vmchale··on Covid vaccination linked to 'substantial reduction' in hospital admissions
> hospital admissions) be the almost singular criterion to influence public policy / restrictive measures?

From a control theory perspective, it's one of the worst measures because it's delayed. Much more efficient to measure cases - then you don't need restricted social life as long.

vmchale··on Tagged Unions Are Overrated
There's a hack!

You can do

    data Value a =
      I32 Int32 a
      B Bool
and then

    type Value1 = Value ()
    type Value2 = Value Void
as a hack
vmchale··on Tagged Unions Are Overrated
> . If you automatically enforce exhaustiveness then you either need to freeze all your public data-types

I think that's good practice!

vmchale··on I am a heroin user. I do not have a drug problem
> Opiate addiction comes along with flu like symptoms, insomnia, restless legs/arms AKA crazy legs, and an ever present anxiety that you really really want some that will make you do some weird shit just to get it. ... Many are all in your head, or, can be overcome by willpower, but definitely not opiates

Sure, but one can be dependent on e.g. SSRIs or SNRIs. But they aren't addictive!

Dependence + addiction is a special problem with opiates, I think you can die from withdrawals?
