vlod··on Apple to soon take up to 30% cut from all Patreon creators in iOS app
I might be in the minority but I have a really hard time using iOS and their apps in general (I use Android).

I struggle (and mostly curse) to figure out what swipe gesture to use to get simple stuff to just work. Not super sure all the 60fps animations and wizz-bang behaviours are being used the way you think they are.

I've been trying to find a decent 16'' laptop (to replace my thinkpad x1 carbon).

Been running linux (popos) for donkey years and I entertained the thought I should go back to Apple and get the MacbookPro-16 (which is probably the best laptop you can buy imho).

Then I remembered all this crap that Apple does and dismissed it.

Yep, it's the driving force why I rarely install apps. If the mobile site doesn't work well, it's a good filter that I shouldn't use it. (Doom scrolling trap).

For those that are not aware, on Android you can install Firefox and Ublock-Origin. Life saver!

Off topic, but is there anything specific that you hate about Android? I find it acceptable. I'm trying to cut down my phone usage so maybe I'm more tolerant.

vlod··on Ask HN: Is it still worth pursuing a software startup?
Try and go for $100 MRR (pay for servers and some pizza). Big companies won't go for that.

Try another idea (while still running the above). Go for $1000 MMR. Still too small.

This is harder than you think and will teach you incredible skills. Next: keep going. :)

DISCLAIMER: obviously don't quit your job/starve/become homeless etc to try this.

vlod··on Ask HN: Is it still worth pursuing a software startup?
I just keep hearing all these people that preach this, but I don't see anything substantial (that isn't something stupid or a tutorial they followed from medium) that anyone responds with. e.g. of a meh: give me top 10 HN articles for today and summarize the contents, add tags and build a website. I know AI can do that, but it's not impressive.

Not to pick on you, be mean or anything, but your github profile says no contributions in a year. Obviously there are other online git repo sites.

Care to share anything in prod? For a reply so aggressive, the proof is in the pudding.

vlod··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
I once shard a flat/apartment with a female social butterfly. She once gave me some great advice, which is to NEVER turn down an invitation.

Going out and trying to be comfortable in non-ideal situations (i.e. you know hardly anyone there) is a skill you can learn. I often think it's probably like sales cold calling. After a while you develop calluses.

vlod··on Ask HN: How can we solve the loneliness epidemic?
When I go to tech meetups, I often see a great deal of people sitting alone using their phones, because interacting with people you don't know is scary.

Try to resist! Yeah it's scary but most tech-heads are as nerdy/goofy as you and are interested in all the details of whatever you hacking on.

vlod··on Ask HN: What did you find out or explore today?
Maybe go outside for a walk and look at nature? give your eyes a rest. (Assuming your working too hard).

Really don't want to f.up your eyes!

vlod··on Let's be honest, Generative AI isn't going all that well
>my cofounder is rewriting code we spent millions of salary on in the past by himself in a few weeks.

I was expecting a language reference (we all know which one), to get more speed, safety and dare I say it "web scale" (insert meme). :)

vlod··on Ozempic is changing the foods Americans buy
I have a few drinks a week max, doesn't really bother me if I don't drink.

A friend of mine revealed they have a drink with dinner (at home) every evening, sometimes more and they still go out drinking.

I was pretty shocked. I think trying to break this dinner habit (if you're doing this) is a good starting point.

vlod··on Scott Adams has died
For those that want to know more context about his comments about race, it was based on a poll [0].

Make you're own mind up.

vlod··on Scott Adams has died
There's a lot of context around stuff he said. It seems to me that people are very eager to tag people with labels from others. I don't get the impression that others have seen many of his YouTube videos.

It's valuable to maybe watch the episodes and make your own mind up.

vlod··on Scott Adams has died
For those that liked Scott Adams might like some Lofi-like music by the artist "Akira The Don". He sampled some videos from Scott against Japanese anime.

vlod··on I dumped Windows 11 for Linux, and you should too
Yeah this is what switched me. I was forever complaining about wall gardens and yet was too 'comfortable' with my macbook-pro as it was the best laptop period.

I switched to a thinkpad x1-carbon and popos and never looked back. Sure I would love 10 hour battery life, but it's not THAT big of deal (for me) to carry a charger.

vlod··on I replaced Windows with Linux and everything's going great
PopOS is what I've picked (using it ~6 years). Their new distribution is called Cosmic (Wayland). They've moved away from Gnome to a rust based Iced.
vlod··on My article on why AI is great (or terrible) or how to use it
My point is that it's tempting and irresistible (based on other comments in this thread) to move from basic attribute sorting, to basic CRUD, SQL queries, CSS/Tailwind, typescript error resolution then using it for Dijkstra, because why not?, it's so nice.

Then we're just puppetmasters pulling the strings (which some think this is the way the industry is going).

vlod··on Exercise can be nearly as effective as therapy for depression
“Action precedes motivation.” ― Robert McKain

This seems to work for me at least. If I start trying to reason with myself why I should get out of bed at 5am to go to the gym rather than excuse XYZ, I will talk myself out of it.

If I simply start "moving" and start doing "stuff" without engaging my brain, things happen and within a short space of time, I'm pumping iron and feeling great.

vlod··on My article on why AI is great (or terrible) or how to use it
I've always believed that the dozens of 'bitchy little issues' are the means to grow as a developer.

Once you've done it, you'll hopefully never have to do it again (or at worse be derivatives). Over time you'll have a collection of 'how to do stuff'.

I think this is the path to growth. Letting a LLM do it for you is equivalent to it solving a hard leetcode problem. You're not really taxing your brain.

vlod··on Ask HN: How to make working in software fun again?
Is this is for personal projects or work related? For personal, I say do what the hell you want. There's no point being deliberately miserable if you get so much enjoyment out of it. e.g. Build a compiler for BASIC that outputs LLVM bytecode! :-)

For work, you probably have to dance to someone else's tune.

vlod··on LaTeX Coffee Stains (2021) [pdf]

vlod··on The unbearable joy of sitting alone in a café
I have a feeling I had a similar childhood to you (strict/smothering).

I also find it problematical to deal with people who live 'normal/standard' lives who are not curious about the world and how everything works. Being put in a conversation talking about sports, gossip, celebrities is intolerable for me.

I've come to accept (and I think some people here may resonate with) that this is can be a blessing or good filtering mechanism.

vlod··on The unbearable joy of sitting alone in a café
"All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone." - Blaise Pascal

I try and think about this often.

vlod··on Claude Code On-the-Go
>But the cognitive dissonance I feel when I think about what this means over a longer time horizon is really painful.

Excluding work (where granted, some companies are dictating the use of llms) and trying not to sound uncaring or disrespectful, but have you thought about not using llms for everything and using the old grey cells? Not having answers to every whimsical thought might be a good thing.

It's very easy to relax the brain (and be lazy tbh) with llms and it's scary to think what will happen in the next 4 years in terms of personal cognitive ability (or as a society).

e.g. I've noticed (and probably most have here) that the world is full of zombies glued to their phones. Looking over their shoulder (e.g. on a train, yeah it's a bit rude but I'm the curious type), they are doom scrolling or playing waste-time games (insert that boomer meme in Las Vegas with slot machines [0]). I try to use my phone as little as possible (especially for dog walks) and feel better for it, allowing me to daydream and let boredom take over.

Maybe I'm fortunate to be able to do this (gen-x: having grown up before cell phones/internet), but worth stating in case anyone wants to try.

vlod··on 2026 will be my year of the Linux desktop
With the new PopOS Cosmic and them dumping GNOME for their own UI framework based on Iced [0] (and based on rust), I have high hopes that things will move to more linux (especially for folks here who are rust-heads).

vlod··on Resistance training load does not determine hypertrophy
I agree with this, but for those newbies be careful at what you define as "failure".

I've f.up my MCL by not listening to my body and I have the stability of a typical 85 year old while I try and 'heal'. It takes longer as you get older (you're probably not 20 year old) and stupid stuff can really take you out.

vlod··on Kitchen optimizations
Well I don't think residential kitchens are as chaotic as a commercial kitchen, so sure drinking out of a non breaking container is probably a good idea (glass breakage is a pita there).

However most people (I assume on HN) are not line cooks and do not work in commercial kitchens. I drink out of glass (don't want plasticy taste) and use glass to store leftover food.

Here's one: "There's a reason most line cooks drink out a deli rather than read NIH" [0] :)

As previously mentioned, whether one thinks using glass is worth it is a personal preference.

[0]: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11193405/

[0] TLDR: Guidance

Avoid plastic containers as much as possible. My ranking (and only if food-grade) of probability of leaching chemicals into the foods they contain...

vlod··on Kitchen optimizations
Whether you think that using plastic (deli) cups are a cause of all humanities health problems or not, you might want to use glass containers. They're reusable, microwavable (I believe that's a no-no for plastic, but who knows nowadays) and dishwasher safe.
vlod··on Kitchen optimizations
Why should I optimize my code? To save 420ms for what?

I dunno. I try to optimize everything in life, maybe it's the engineer in me (I find it fun and interesting how people do things inefficiently). I also try and measure ingredients exactly (e.g. 420g of flour, not 419g or 421g), however that might be some low form of OCD. /shrug

Whether I use that extra time or not doesn't really matter for me.
