vkdelta··on A $182B Chip Maker: AMD's Labs – Full Documentary [video]
How hard is it for a new startup to become a chip company?
vkdelta··on Westfield Walks Away from Downtown San Francisco Mall Property
“ Traffic and sales at other Westfield properties increased during the same period.”

This clearly shows there is demand but people prefer to go somewhere else. San Francisco is becoming worse day by day with crime and city maintenance. But mayor wants to somehow not show any link with this and conveniently says it is long coming.

NameDrop: sounds like a bad name for feature (negative connotation). May be they ran out of options.
vkdelta··on India cuts periodic table and evolution from school textbooks
Above ranking does not make sense at all. Is CBSE is so low ranked, why is prevalent board in Indian and schools abroad which favors CBSE?

ICSE is more all round syllabus which makes sense but does not make it difficult or higher ranked than CBSE.

vkdelta··on Nvidia is now a $1T company
See one other small cap company benefiting out of this nvda upside because of AI and GPUs sale.

SuperMicro(SMCI) is up 10x is last 2 years with most growth recently.

vkdelta··on Apple announces multibillion deal with Broadcom to make components in the USA
So, Apple decides to make their own 5G cellular modem. Now, apart from Baseband, some of the RF in the cellular is hard (modulators with low power consumption, Envelope trackers, diplexers, duplexers). Some of these were designed by Qualcomm and some from Avago (Broadcom got acquired by Avago and renamed to Broadcom), Skyworks, Analog Devices, etc. So it is not surprising that Apple wants Broadcom's help for next few years until when Apple decides to again vertically integrate and make those components as well ( but they may decide it is not that cost competitive to do do).

The hardest part was Qualcomm's cost and paying them FOB royalties (which got capped at some point by DOJ/FTC involvement).

vkdelta··on Ask HN: Is anyone hosting their own Jitsi server?
Yes, I had hosted it on Digital ocean for a long time to bypass telco regimes where FaceTime and WhatsApp is blocked for A/V calls.

It worked pretty well. I was scared of security issues where I thought some miscreants might have calls and I get blamed for it. There were security issues(which probably could be fixed but I didn’t spend too much time)

The problem was UX for mom and pop folks

vkdelta··on Apple dives into display-making to cut reliance on Samsung
They have designed their own SoCs, own BLE radio and now working on their own cellular and Wifi radios.

I understand displays is another beast but apple is doing complete vertical integration like no one else. Anytime they notice a dependency on specific vendor, they try to move out.

vkdelta··on Pixel Tablet
What’s with google in last few weeks? Tons of AI and a couple of new pixel devices! Are they really pulling everything in their arsenal in a short window to keep Wall Street happy?
vkdelta··on Smartphones with Qualcomm chip secretly send personal data to Qualcomm
and another large Wi-Fi Wireless chipmaker secretly sends data to their mothership + shares with ISPs. What can do you? very little, since the code is binary and it is buried in their FW. Even with Opensource SW, it is hard to get rid of the binary blob.
vkdelta··on Re-live buying a computer in 1995 [video]
See how web changed the last 30s. You no longer need a compatible PC/Mac to talk to your friend.
vkdelta··on Google’s 80-acre San Jose mega-campus is on hold
Will this help to drop prices of homes in San Jose? I remember a lot of realtors selling the future of google
vkdelta··on Thieves cut hole in a bathroom wall, steal $500k worth of items from Apple Store
Can apple invalidate parts of iPhones?
vkdelta··on Management structures at major tech companies (2011) [image]
does a specific structure really help? GOOG/META seemed good when the company was small. Now it seems like more a like a con then a pro.
vkdelta··on Intel graphics chief Raja Koduri leaves after five years battling Nvidia and AMD
He must be charming personality and great interviewer for people to lure him everywhere :)
vkdelta··on Roku devices don't support IPv6 in 2023 and it's costing ISPs
For a company who thrives on making cheap devices and charging for licenses/platform, this is almost a crime especially when supporting ipv6 on Linux based devices is much easier now. Wonder why don’t support it.
vkdelta··on Web Design Museum 1991-2006
It feels like things mostly changed around 2009+ (mobile era) and have kind of had minor changes since then.
vkdelta··on Ask HN: What should I do with all of these sandals?
unrelated: 1/ Can you provide some financial details of this experiment (If you are ok)? (how much inventory did you order, how long did you run, how much was FOB cost, How much was margin, Lessons learned, etc)

2/ If you dont mind, what theme are you using for this shopify page?

vkdelta··on ESP32 Buyer’s Guide: Different Chips, Firmware, Sensors
try ebay or newegg to get used or refurb ones. a lot of switches last really long.
vkdelta··on ESP32 Buyer’s Guide: Different Chips, Firmware, Sensors
I don’t think it will be good option. I think RPi is better for your usecase.

I believe pihole works with just 1 eth port as you are just using it for dns queries and not actually NAT’ing traffic through it.
