vjvjvjvjghv··on Becoming a Research Engineer at a Big LLM Lab
That sets the bar pretty high for intelligence and by that standard there probably aren't too many humans who have intelligence.
vjvjvjvjghv··on Worse on Purpose
The problem is that a lot of the money doesn't go towards the people/causes it was intended to go but into the pockets of well connected middlemen.
vjvjvjvjghv··on Worse on Purpose
It's kind of weird. There is a lot of propaganda that says

* rich people spending money==great investment into the economy and we need to give them more so they make the economy even better

* poor people spending money==mindless consumption, it's a bad idea to give them money because they are wasting it anyways

vjvjvjvjghv··on Worse on Purpose
I think "Tax the rich" is the wrong slogan. What we need is to incentivize sharing the progress we are making in terms of productivity widely instead of all the benefits going to a few. For example some people are talking about giving company shares to all workers. This would align the incentives for all workers in the company to do better and then benefiting instead of just the top few percent.

I wonder if this could be achieved by changing the tax code.

Maybe LLM will be to AI what dial up was to the internet. It’s a start that gets things going and attracts investment for better things.
vjvjvjvjghv··on Becoming a Research Engineer at a Big LLM Lab
I am super happy that I am retiring soon. The hiring process these days just sucks.

How would you define AI? It seems they can do a lot of useful things. They are very good for processing language and I find Claude Code to be a better coder than a lot of human programmers.
vjvjvjvjghv··on The Silurian Hypothesis (2020)
How can anyone say the hypothesis is true? There is absolutely no evidence for it. It’s just a thought experiment.
vjvjvjvjghv··on The Silurian Hypothesis (2020)
I don’t think it’s necessary to falsify a statement that has absolutely no evidence for it being true.
vjvjvjvjghv··on Zero roadkill as Amazon canopy bridges secure 15,000 crossings
I always wonder how the world would look if the bible had said "Respect the earth and all living beings" instead of “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion…"
vjvjvjvjghv··on Charles Ross spent 50 yrs building Star Axis naked-eye observatory in New Mexico
I don't think it would get too crowded. There really isn't much else going on in that area and not much population either.

I live in Albuquerque and within 2 hours you get the darkest skies you can imagine. Put that together with the average elevation and the dryness and the views are spectacular.

I have similar thoughts about cave paintings and petroglyphs. Maybe they were done by graffiti teenagers and the elders were complaining about these young vandals.
vjvjvjvjghv··on IRGC claims it destroyed Amazon's Bahrain data center
From what I have read, their armed forces aren’t very motivated. There are stories about pilot trainings where the pilots were a bunch of rich guys that got into their jet, took off with full afterburner, did some fun loops and landed after using up their fuel.

Saudi has the advantage that they have the US doing the dirty work for them. No need to do much themselves.

vjvjvjvjghv··on Police removed prominent scientists from American Diabetes Association meeting
The US has managed to combine the worst aspects of universal/socialized health care with the worst aspects of an attempted free market system. It’s quite an achievement.
vjvjvjvjghv··on Police Removed Prominent Scientists from the ADA Meeting. Researchers Respond
“ So no surprise that the ADA is a fully industry-captured organization,”

I am always imagining the doctors working together with the food industry that pours sugar into everything and the insulin producers. It’s a perfectly symbiotic relationship.

vjvjvjvjghv··on The Psychology of Software Teams
Reminds me of my sister doing a course in Nonviolent Communication and then for a while violently forcing all communication with her to follow these principles or she would get really angry.
vjvjvjvjghv··on Open Book Touch: open-source e-reader
The screen seems a little small. And buttons would be good too.
vjvjvjvjghv··on My midlife crisis Corolla is fast, furious, and modded
It’s a very small percentage of these vehicles though.
vjvjvjvjghv··on StubHub, CEO hit with ‘deceptive practices’ class action over mass scalping
I don’t really understand the outrage over scalpers. Isn’t this just normal market behavior? Is a retailer that buys things and sells them with a markup a scalper?

People seem to be willing to pay crazy prices for events.

vjvjvjvjghv··on SpaceX wants to launch 100k more Starlink satellites for 100x the bandwidth
That's his job description
vjvjvjvjghv··on SpaceX wants to launch 100k more Starlink satellites for 100x the bandwidth
If you don't take long exposures, the satellites won't cause you much trouble seeing the stars. Regular light pollution is the problem.
vjvjvjvjghv··on FAANG Simulator
“ In my personal experience, the jobs I have taken which paid less treated me as cheaper and more disposable. ”

That’s my experience. The more I have made in my career, the better and with more respect I got treated. As freelance I did some projects with non profit “do gooders”. They didn’t pay well and treated people horribly. On the other hand, successful companies will treat you well and pay well.

vjvjvjvjghv··on And Then the Billionaire Paid Off $550 Million of Our Debts
I think the better use of the 550 million would be to lobby for eliminating the danger of medical debt. The medical sector will just take the money and keep going on as before. Nothing has been really improved.

Same for student loan forgiveness. We should ask why tuition has to go up constantly instead of pumping more money into a broken system.

I think Mark Cuban has it right with his Cost+ site. It actually improves the system.

vjvjvjvjghv··on Egypt Is Building a New Nile
Do these Indian companies implement things in India?
vjvjvjvjghv··on What does privatization of the US Postal Service mean?
"And if the postal service dies or is captured and privatized, that’s a reflection of the preferences of voters, or a testament to the limits of their attention and intelligence to the point where they voted for people who did things they don’t want."

I hate this. There is plenty of research showing that the opinion of the broader electorate has almost no influence on most policies. Only lobbyists and donors count.

vjvjvjvjghv··on Most rewrites serve the engineer, not the business
"I hate those guys who declare we absolutely must do sweeping changes to the codebase/architecture so that we are in line with the latest best practices after spending an hour with the codebase."

They also don't understand that their super shiny code will be legacy soon too.

vjvjvjvjghv··on Internal Combustion Engine (2021)
Yes. I think the iPhone keyboard tricked me again. I remember having to work quite a bit to convince it to take "stroke" instead of "strike" and I guess it finally decided at submission to go back to "strike".
vjvjvjvjghv··on Most rewrites serve the engineer, not the business
Not necessarily. I have seen it plenty of times where a new contributor/manager comes in, declares all existing code is crap and needs to be rewritten to their favorite language/framework/cloud provider.

A lot of rewrites could be avoided if people spent some time to actually understand what was done before. It’s a pretty safe assumption that the people who worked on the codebase before were as smart as you.
