vjeux··on Skip: A programming language to skip the things you have already computed
Great feedback! This is a big oversight.
vjeux··on Tell HN: Nobody at Facebook has worked on Jest for years
In practice the ESM support in Jest is blocked by a v8 dependency and not jest itself at this point. If you are able to nudge this issue that would be fantastic! https://github.com/nodejs/node/issues/37648
vjeux··on My Path to Financial Independence as a Software Engineer
You are right, I should be more precise.

If you earn more than $523,600 and are single, then your tax rate is not 50% but 37%, which is still meaningful amount that is often not considered when looking at those big numbers. https://www.manafld.com/blog/2021/2/26/rsus-no-sell-tax

If you are in California, then your employer will not give you all your RSU but sell 40% and give you 60%. So you don’t have a big scary surprise when it’s tax season. https://blog.myrawealth.com/insights/rsu-tax-rate

vjeux··on My Path to Financial Independence as a Software Engineer
Child care in the bay area is $2-3k / month per child. Plus you need a bigger home with one more bedroom so an additional $1-2k/month. Then a bigger car. This is without all the expenses related to having a child such as healthcare, food, activities…

It goes up quickly!

vjeux··on My Path to Financial Independence as a Software Engineer
Tech stock is taxed at around 50% when you get it and then 20% of the upswing. So $475k total comp is more like $250k in your bank account in practice.
vjeux··on How to draw S-curved arrows between boxes
Back in 2012 I made a series of blog posts about all the unique image algorithms I could find:

- Facebook (that I designed): https://blog.vjeux.com/2012/image/image-layout-algorithm-fac...

- Google Plus: https://blog.vjeux.com/2012/javascript/image-layout-algorith...

- Google Plus, finding best breaks, which also explains fancy text layout algorithm: https://blog.vjeux.com/2014/image/google-plus-layout-find-be...

- Lightbox: https://blog.vjeux.com/2012/javascript/image-layout-algorith...

- Lightbox Android: https://blog.vjeux.com/2012/javascript/image-layout-algorith...

- 500px: https://blog.vjeux.com/2012/javascript/image-layout-algorith...

I hope that’s useful!

vjeux··on TinyVG: A challenger to the throne of vector graphics
I was hoping to make an excalidraw exporter to TinyVG but unfortunately it doesn't support text. It makes sense given that rendering text is horrible but doesn't work with this use case.
vjeux··on Ask HN: Software Engineer hitting 40: what's next?
I’m personally working from the US but a sizable part of my org (Client performance and reliability) and my previous org (React Native / React) are in Europe. As a French person, the European side of fb is dear to my heart!
vjeux··on Ask HN: Software Engineer hitting 40: what's next?
It seems like a senior (E7+) position at Facebook fits what you are looking for. Let me know if you want to chat about it. vjeux@fb.com
vjeux··on The Invisible JavaScript Backdoor
Another reason to use prettier, this will be formated in a confusing way and has a higher chance of being spotted by a human!
vjeux··on Why is Excalidraw so good?
In all the years since it was rolled out, I’ve seen hundreds of security warnings but absolutely none was remotely close to a real security issue.
vjeux··on Why is Excalidraw so good?
Yeah, we’ve been trying to keep it without calling to any external service. Both of them are optional, excalidraw will work offline and/or with an adblocker that blocks those domains.

That said, those two have been really important for the success of the project. Google Analytics is helpful to get a sense of how important it is to people and motivation for the team. The second one helped us fix a lot of edge cases that couldn’t immediately be found via normal testing.

vjeux··on Why is Excalidraw so good?
If you select an element (or groups of elements) there is a little circle that appears at the top of the selection rectangle, you can drag it around to make it rotate.
vjeux··on Why is Excalidraw so good?
Fwiw, Ken Wheeler suggested the name excalibur but when looking for the domain it was already taken but excalibur.draw was suggested. I ended up bringing the two together leading to excalidraw, which was available everywhere.
vjeux··on Why is Excalidraw so good?
Agreed. It was originally developed for desktop use cases and we did a straight port to mobile which surprisingly worked way better than I anticipated.

But we need to do another pass at it, the lack of move tool is really annoying indeed. I also want to add more gestures.

Procreate is so good and we should aim to be a similar experience.

vjeux··on Why is Excalidraw so good?
The plus plan has been very successful from my point of view, we’ve been able to bootstrap the business and make our first hire.

The key realization is that while the unauthenticated open source model works really well for individuals, it’s hard for companies to adopt.

They want authentication, security policies, private spaces to collaborate, access control, search… all of this requires having a company behind it in practice and the open source model doesn’t work as well.

The two versions so far work really well alongside each other right now.

vjeux··on Why is Excalidraw so good?
Yeah, this is one of the top things we want to address. Right now text and shapes are not linked with each other which makes it super annoying to use.

We just shipped image support which has been widely requested, this is next in our list.

vjeux··on Why is Excalidraw so good?
We’ve open sourced the font and made a lot of small but important changes to it over the past 6 months. If you are willing to help, it would be great if you could open an issue with specific words that are difficult to read with your dyslexia and we can figure out how to tweak the font to remove the ambiguity. Thanks for bringing this up!

vjeux··on Why is Excalidraw so good?
I technically didn’t create prettier, James Long did. But I brought it from a 3-weeks prototype over the winter break to a production ready tool used for all Facebook codebase and nowadays to most of the world.
vjeux··on Why is Excalidraw so good?
Yeah sorry about the initial version of handwriting, we thought we could do a quick hack and use the multi point line rendering for it but it didn’t work well in practice.

We switched to the awesome “perfect” library from Steve Ruiz instead. Could you create an issue about the lag on ipad pro, we should investigate and fix.

vjeux··on Ask HN: State of PHP at Facebook?
All of the language features in ES6 / Flow / JSX that Facebook has been pushing through as part of the React ecosystem have been pioneered by Hack/HHVM at Facebook and then ported very closely to the JavaScript ecosystem.
vjeux··on Show HN: Time travel debugger for web development
My theory is that breakpoints are not useful because they let you go forward. But if you have an issue somewhere where a variable is not in the right state, it's because somewhere in the past was the issue. But you can't go back with a normal debugger.

Replay allows you to go back in time which is to me the biggest breakthrough. This actually makes them useful!

vjeux··on Migrating to Next.js from Create React App
The title should be changed from “from React.js” to “from create-react-app”. Next is still based on React.js.
vjeux··on ZeroVer: 0-Based Versioning
I haven’t worked on React Native for many years now… looks like it has slowed down! It was monthly in the first few years.
vjeux··on ZeroVer: 0-Based Versioning
For React Native we do ~monthly releases and just increase by 1 each time. It’s a train model this way people know when their changes will get released. I guess we should consider bumping to 1.x at some point and keep going :)
vjeux··on Is Facebook's “Prophet” the time-series Messiah or just a naughty boy?
Very entertaining article. That said, as a human, I hard a really had time forecasting most of the time series shown in the article. The ones that had a semblance of regularity it felt like Prophet did a resonable job.
vjeux··on Google Docs will now use canvas based rendering
They unfortunately already do. The state of contentEditable on the web is such that you need to if you want to have a non standard experience like google docs.
vjeux··on Cycles X
When I was working on a ray tracer, I found that interpolating the color from neighboring points instead of leaving it blank for in-progress elements was a huge improvement for quickly seeing what the scene is going to look like. In the video examples it doesn't seem like they're doing it. I'm interested to know the rationale.

(See "Progressive Rendering" section for an example: https://blog.vjeux.com/2012/javascript/javascript-ray-tracer... )

vjeux··on At 38.5% vaccinated, US may be running low on people eager for a shot
38.5% has at least one shot (as the title of the article says), not 61%. 61% is the result of a survey.
vjeux··on Don’t hire top talent; hire for weaknesses
For what it’s worth, at Facebook the general hiring process is in two steps. There’s a centralized hire/no hire that most people are aware of and then a second phase where team selection happens. This is where all the “hire for weakness” steps that the author mention happen. Teams are looking at this pool of people for speciality, levels... that they need and where the matchmaking happens.

There are also a lot of smaller but specialized longstanding loops like front-end, AI... and one off “reqs” for special roles that teams need.

The world of hiring is very fascinating :)
