vixen99··on Read the novels and forget everything else
I'm afraid the examples of 'his finest comedy' are so 'dry' I'm missing it completely. My loss I guess.
vixen99··on The Case for Bad Coffee
Certainly, lighter roasts are less intensive in taste than the darker versions. We should be aware though that frorm the health angle, dark roasts have significantly less polyphenols. Food Chemistry 129 (2011) 991–1000. Cheap coffee? Good news from this paper at least - Robusta (source for most 'Instant') offers a bit more than Arabica.
vixen99··on The Absurdity of Albert Camus
I am intrigued and wonder why you stopped at the third page?
vixen99··on What liberal arts education is for (2024)
Some people say it nevertheless. Oscar Kambona, a Cabinet Minister in President Nyerere's Tanzanian Government tells how he met Mao in China. Prior to the meeting he spoke to some surgeons repairing a fractured leg. Were they satisfied the operation had been a success? "Yes", they said, "because we read Chairman Mao's Little Red Book before the operation. You can achieve anything if you follow a leader".
vixen99··on How to Exist
Sure - no real argument but it's maybe worth examining the assumptions underlying this which you know exist because you say 'maybe' and 'I am afraid ...'. Accounts abound as to why 'doing nothing' is not necessarily a negative activity. If you're in good health, sometimes absolutely passivity after having drunk in the fact that 'For a while I am alive and consciousness in this inexplicably incredible universe and it's a massive privilege' is extraordinarily beneficial for the times you are not predicting.
vixen99··on PGSimCity - How PostgreSQL Works
Not everyone will come to view this model from the same vantage point. Some will simply be curious about some famous software that they don't happen to use. So the tour is an excellent idea. Great presentation. Congratulations.
vixen99··on Third Drone Shot Down in Three Days in Romanian Territory
They are cheap but the rockets to shoot them down cost (I've heard but don't count on it) around $480,000 per missile. That is not a minor consideration for a country like Romania.
vixen99··on Ten Steps Towards Happiness (2015)
Negative happiness. For Hitler, being captured alive and utterly humiliated in front of the world's jury as it were, must have been a prospect too horrible to contemplate. Happiness with a coefficient of -10 as against maybe -5 immediately prior to death by poison + gunshot. His and probably everybody else's choice and as in his case, something for dictators to ponder.
vixen99··on Bananas sprout in Rayleigh Garden UK after 15 years
Moreover with 78% of UK Met Office temperature measuring sites failing to meet Class 1 or 2 standards ex FOI request), the reported temperatures are all spot on! Might add that the ~ 2 trillion tons of concrete associated with energy-producing-humans which we've taken from under the earth and dumped on top since 1900 has had zero effect on any local temperatures. As we all know, the storage heater principle only works if you buy those devices you get from home appliance stores.
vixen99··on Bananas sprout in Rayleigh Garden UK after 15 years
Some time ago an FOI (Freedom of Information) request to the UK Met Office got the following response:

Background: Class 1–2 are regarded as excellent or very good exposures, Class 3 permits uncertainties up to about 1 °C, Class 4 permits uncertainties up to about 2 °C, and Class 5 permits uncertainties up to about 5 °C because of nearby artificial heat sources or other exposure problems.

According to analyses of the released data, approximately:

22% of stations were Classes 1–3, about 49% were Class 4, about 29% were Class 5.

I guess there must be very good reasons for not ensuring that the majority of stations are Class 1-3.

Meanwhile: Is this true?

'Secret military documents from clandestine forums between Russia and China have revealed a possible joint strategic plan to disable Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite network alongside a deep weapons development partnership spanning hypersonic missile defense and autonomous drones, The Insider reported on July 9.'

vixen99··on EU Parliament greenlights Chat Control 1.0
I don't understand either but just for reference on your point:

Trust in the EU is at its highest in 18 years

'52% of Europeans trust the EU, the highest result since 2007. The level of trust is highest among young people aged 15-24 (59%). Setting another 18-year record, 52% of Europeans say they trust the European Commission, with scoring again particularly high among young citizens (57%). At the same time, 36% of Europeans say they trust their national government and 37% say they trust their national parliament.Three quarters of respondents (75%) - the highest level in more than two decades - say they feelthey are citizens of the EU.'

On the other hand look at who issued this report. https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/api/files/docume...

vixen99··on Every new car sold in the European Union must include a driver monitoring camera
Given an (admittedly) optimistic future forecast for remote assessment of parameters related to driver blood chemistry and physiology - will this then be an inevitable further add-on legal requirement for human-driven transport?

vixen99··on US Govt to individually approve who gets GPT 5.6
Probably you're right overall but that doesn't apply to anyone who chooses to want to educate their kids in a non-taxpayer funded State school. Around 100–105 independent schools were reported as having ceased operations after the UK government introduced 20% VAT on private school fees from January 2025. Some may feel (I would not dare suggest it) that the current government is on a mission to close them all up unless they attract sufficiently rich parents like Eton. Closing the latter would be news indeed. However - exit Exeter Cathedral School after 847 years, which taught Charles II's composer and Coldplay's Chris Martin. It's closing with financial difficulties which have beset the sector in general since charges were introduced.
vixen99··on Extreme Heat conference cancelled due to extreme heat warning
In the UK and other European locations maybe this is related to some of the highest electricity costs in the world.
vixen99··on Slow breathing modulates brain function and risk behavior
The finding certainly chimes with my experience. A few deep breaths each with a slow release taking up to around twelve seconds almost always lowers my blood pressure sometimes by as much as 10 points with the attendant calmness thrown in. Although the BP effect is temporary, by habitually doing it, my BP even drops on a semi-permanent basis. Reports on this routine abound. If the goal here can be achieved, those with a BP problem will immediately appreciate the upside of this approach.
vixen99··on Norway imposes near ban on AI in elementary school
Relevance of 'magot - a seated oriental figurine, usually of porcelain or ivory, with a grotesque form' to someone who criticizes the US? The allusion is too esoteric for me I'm afraid.

vixen99··on Making 'food out of thin air' (2024)
Carbon fixing takes place via photosynthesis plus the light independent Calvin cycle. Hence the extensive greening that's taken place since CO2 elevation. This was first noticed via satellite in early 1980s. Overall there has been an increase of around 25-50% of vegetated land area. Productivity gains have been around 10%. Elevated CO2 has been the main driver. Plants got to get their (45-50% of their mass) carbon from somewhere.
vixen99··on Only 16 Percent of Americans Think AI Will Have a Positive Impact on Society
It's interesting that you (and, I'm guessing, a majority of HN folk who comment) feel that conservative intellectuals like Thomas Sowell, Victor Davis Hanson, John Mearsheimer, Niall Ferguson, Harvey Mansfield, Heather Mac Donald to quote only a few, voted for Trump. Are these people idiots or partook of some low scheming advantage as a result?

vixen99··on How to earn a billion dollars
There again you might pay a lot of taxes and not get the services and have questionable societal stability. Ask some Brits about that.
