vivekv··on The LLM is not Intelligence
We often talk about LLMs as if they are doing something remarkably close to human intelligence. My take is that it is the conversation with the human that creates intelligence and meaning
vivekv··on Simplenote is no longer in active development
Thats sad! For those looking to migrate out, I wrote this backup tool that pulls your note out of simplenote and uploads it to sqlite database. Hope this helps https://github.com/vivekhub/simplenote-backup
vivekv··on Scaling long-running autonomous coding
I would agree with this. There are definite challenges in grounded specifications today and the tendency for an LLM to go in tangents that is still a struggle that we all deal with every day.
vivekv··on Phone numbers for use in TV shows, films and creative works
If you haven't seen this movie. An old one but good one https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0183649/plotsummary/
vivekv··on Show HN: I aggregated over 200 Go-To-Market strategies
This! I am not going to buy the next AI magic tool because of a cold mail. I don't even know I need it and I won't read a cold mail end to end if it starts like that. If I need something I go looking and if I don't even know I need it, cold mail wouldn't help
vivekv··on Cuba Can't Keep the Lights On
Would anyone familiar with cuba know how much of household solar adoption and infrastructure exists in Cuba?

While this won't solve a country level problem I am sure, I am thinking was there a natural adoption to such alternative sources and go off-grid and address their immediate power needs as the article says rolling blackouts have been happening for a while.
vivekv··on Ask HN: Is there any software you only made for your own use but nobody else?
I am definitely curious about a tool like this. I work with a lot of video streams and this collective knowledge of quirks might be useful as a QA tool
vivekv··on C Is Not a Low-level Language (2018)
I am neither a compiler writer or an OS guru. Just an old c programmer. In this article it looks like the entire CPU instruction set was designed to emulate pdp11 to ensure c compatibility. So my naive question. What is stopping a Microprocessor manufacturer to have two instruction sets one that is compatible and one that allows us to fully utilise the modern CPU but with a different programming paradigm? Is that too expensive or hard to do? I genuinely don't know.
vivekv··on A framework to securely use LLMs in companies – Part 1: Overview of Risks
Writing detailed reports from data Chatbots Education tools that remove the human element
vivekv··on The day I locked everyone out of the company intranet
Whe. I first learned SQL on an oracle cli client I was told to type begin; then any other command. For a brief while until i learned about transactions, I assumed that it was part of the cli startup :)
vivekv··on GPT-Prompt-Engineer
So one job that has been 'taken over by ai' before it even started ?
vivekv··on SMS phishers harvested phone numbers, shipment data from UPS tracking tool
Thank you
vivekv··on Mercury OS
Says legal for use only in Europe
vivekv··on The Agony of Putting Your Life on Hold to Care for Your Parents
I can completely relate to this article. I am 53 and caring for my 78 year old mum with dementia. While financial issues are not a challenge as we don't live in America. The emotional burden is massive and the guilt of not having done enough or to be scared of leaving her alone when we have to step out even for a few hours is palpable. I have full time help at home but guilt is irrational. We hadn't taken a vacation in years until we requested my wife's parents to stay in our home when we went out for 3 days after 4+ years. Amazing support from my wife is what is still giving me the strength to handle this situation.
vivekv··on No one reads the terms of service. Lawmakers want to fix that with 'TLDR' bill
Hopefully a gpt based summarizer of the t&c and point out to any nuanced items in there
vivekv··on Why to not use JWT (2021)
I don't quite understand the need for access and session token as a mechanism of expiring sessions. Can we create a signed JWT with the expiration in the body itself? Since it is signed the expiry cannot be tampered with.
vivekv··on Software I’m thankful for (2021)
The last line "Sent from my iPad" was quite fitting as a device that he conceptualized :-)
vivekv··on Serverless DNS: Self-hosted DNS resolver at the edge
Wall of fire... Cracked me up
vivekv··on DNS Toys
brilliant!
vivekv··on Oauth2 support for GMail
For now app passwords
vivekv··on Apple stops accepting payments using credit cards issued by Indian banks
The Reserve Bank of India new rules that have been open for implementation for over an year came into effect. Bottom-line no auto debits more than 5000 rupees a month without consent. This is a great consumer protection initiative but hurts large vendors as they have to seek consent every month.
vivekv··on Heatwave in India breaks records, still worsening
Good question. I don't know. Just seems to be that way
vivekv··on Heatwave in India breaks records, still worsening
India has a large coast where evaporative cooling doesn't work. Only in central India it is an option.
vivekv··on Heatwave in India breaks records, still worsening
We cover up when we go out never expose to the sun

Drink a lot of water to stay hydrated

Eat more carbs and less fat and protein

Drink a lot of buttermilk

vivekv··on Ask HN: Why am I getting probing traffic with “binance.com” as referrer?
Have you checked the IP address of the traffic. If it is a VPN some crypto kiddie playing with tools. If it is binance property i would be surprised.
vivekv··on Ask HN: Software devs with 10 years experience, what do you still love about it?
Intellectual satisfaction and regular doses of dopamine high :-). 30 years and hoping for 30 more.

Edit: Added age :-)

vivekv··on I built a system that takes pictures of all the airplanes that fly over my house
Wow there is a plane roughly every 2-3 minutes even at 1 am. You should be living pretty close to the airport for that kind of traffic? I really don't know how about the traffic density is in various places. Since they are mostly over 30k i assume noise is not an issue ? Would it be possible to mount a omnidirectional mic along with the camera to see if you capture any sounds ?
vivekv··on Ask HN: My boss doesn't think I'm doing good work, how to proceed?
This is a mind shift for the new hires. I typically ping them after a few days asking if they need any help understanding the problem or just a friendly chat on why we are doing that particular project and how it will make relevance to the business. The good ones quickly understand if the path they are choosing makes sense and most of the times opens them up to ask questions.
vivekv··on Ask HN: Strategies to land fully remote $250k+ job
Can you elaborate on Deel please. How does it help? I cant seem to find a link online. appreciate the help.
vivekv··on Indian online merchants cannot store credit card information from 2022
The burden of proof in India is with the merchant. Proof of transaction has to be provided (invoice etc.,)
