vitorbaptistaa··on The largest map of the universe reveals over 800k galaxies
If Claude is correct, these 0.54 square degrees represent 0.0013% of the full 41,253 square degrees of the sky (4*pi steradians).
vitorbaptistaa··on Ask HN: What is the simplest data orchestration tool you've worked with?
My experience entails:

* Luigi -- extensive usage (4y+)

* Makefiles -- (15y+)

* GitHub Actions -- (4y+)

* Airflow -- little usage (<6 months)

* Dagster -- very little, just trying it out

* Prefect -- just followed tutorial

Although it lacks a lot of the monitoring and advanced web ui other platforms have (maybe because of it), Luigi is the simplest to reason about IMHO.

For a new project that will require complex orchestrations, I'd probably go with Dagster or Prefect nowadays. Dagster seems more complex and more powerful with its data lineage functionality, but I have very little experience with either tool.

If it's a simple project, a mix of Makefiles + GH Actions can work well.

vitorbaptistaa··on Using LLMs and Cursor to finish side projects
I think you're looking for simonw's llm python tool [1]. It allows you to do things like `cat script.py | llm -c 'describe what this python script does'`.

You're able to run LLM APIs, local models, multimodals, etc. It is great!

vitorbaptistaa··on Court strikes down US net neutrality rules
This is very common in Brazil. Most carriers give free WhatsApp and Facebook access. As many Brazilians are in the cheapest plans, this basically mean that that's all they can access on their phones.
vitorbaptistaa··on MomBoard: E-ink display for a parent with amnesia
It's the UI, especially for Netflix or other streaming apps. I want something that is totally foolproof. Just click and it starts.
vitorbaptistaa··on MomBoard: E-ink display for a parent with amnesia
I love these kinds of projects. Congratulations to the OP.

Unrelated, but does anyone know a good TV remote for elders? I'd like something like a Stream Deck with big buttons for things like :

* Turn it on/off

* Switch to TV channel 315

* Switch to TV channel 517

* Play Planet Earth on Netflix

* Play Young Sheldon on Netflix

My grandparents are 92 and 97 and even big remotes aren't cutting it. Not only that, but I'd like for them to be able to use ondemand video platforms, not only random TV channels.

To control the TV itself, it seems a RPi or ESP32 with an IR led is enough, but to put something to play on Netflix is surprisingly difficult. I'm able to control a Fire Stick using remote adb commands, but not sure how reliable it is. I'd love to find something like this off the shelf.

Technology is great, but it's not made for elders. It frustrates them (and me), and they end up feeling stupid, which angers me.

I am sure someone else must have done this, but I couldn't find it anywhere.

vitorbaptistaa··on Python client for the $20 Colmi R02 smart ring
Does anyone know if any of these rings' accelerometers are precise enough to detect falls? I am thinking of elderly patients who refuse to use smartwatches or any "old-person-looking" devices.
vitorbaptistaa··on Legalizing sports gambling was a mistake
Unfortunately Brazil also legalized it in 2018, after Dilma was impeached using very sketchy arguments (many call it a legal coup).

It is spreading as a cancer. This month the central bank published a report saying that in August 20% of the Bolsa Família, the largest money transfer program for very poor Brazilians, was spent on these bets.

Out of the 20 million people that receive it, 5 million made bets during that month. This is 2 billion reais (about $450M) spent in a single month by the poorest Brazilians.

It's a cancer. Everywhere you go there are ads. The influencers, the biggest athletes and musicians are marketing it.

Although I tend to be liberal, this needs to be heavily regulated.

Would anyone be kind enough to download the PDF and upload it somewhere for us, Brazilians without VPNs? :)
vitorbaptistaa··on FDA Authorizes First Over-the-Counter Hearing Aid Software
The Sony WH-1000XM4? I'm still on the Bose QC 35, but you got me curious. Could you explain how using it as a hearing aid works? I searched the web but couldn't find good references.

Is it possible to check for the presence/absence of these using data from 23andme?
vitorbaptistaa··on Ask HN: Founders who offer free/OS and paid SaaS, how do you manage your code?
Another good example is CKAN, the most widely used open data portal platform. Their docs are pretty good on how to write plugins -- gives you an idea of how the architecture works.

vitorbaptistaa··on Meta Llama 3
One of the many perks of releasing open-ish models, React, and many other widely used tools over the years. Meta might be the big tech whose open source projects are most widely used. That gives you some dev goodwill, even though your main products profit from some pretty bad stuff.
vitorbaptistaa··on Hawaii moves to ban short-term rentals to address housing crisis
I wonder if this is the result of hotels having to compete with Airbnbs and dropping their prices. I'd love to read a study on this.
vitorbaptistaa··on Ask HN: Do you also marvel at the complexity of everyday objects?
One year before passing away, he sent a beautiful email to himself with this sense of awe:

"I grow little of the food I eat, and of the little I do grow I did not breed or perfect the seeds.

I do not make any of my own clothing.

I speak a language I did not invent or refine. I did not discover the mathematics I use.

I am protected by freedoms and laws I did not conceive of or legislate, and do not enforce or adjudicate.

I am moved by music I did not create myself.

When I needed medical attention, I was helpless to help myself survive.

I did not invent the transistor, the microprocessor, object oriented programming, or most of the technology I work with.

I love and admire my species, living and dead, and am totally dependent on them for my life and well being."

vitorbaptistaa··on How to scale nuclear power
Do you know if the USA current energy production is enough, even considering we'll need to electrify everything (heaters, cars, etc.)? Could you share any good sources on that?
vitorbaptistaa··on How to scale nuclear power
> they put most of the blame on regulation, but the main reason why nuclear is costly today is because there's barely an industry around it and there's no mass production.

Isn't that because of regulation (which was put in place in part because the population demanded it)?

vitorbaptistaa··on An Introduction to APIs
I usually use "non-developer", as that's what it means to me most of the time.

I find it hard to call a data analyst (for example), who can be highly technical, as a non-technical person.

vitorbaptistaa··on Ask HN: Those with success using GPT-4 for programming – what are you doing?
I didn't keep track of the benchmarks very well. However, it went from taking 3+ days and 180GB of memory to process 80M rows [1] to processing 1.3B rows in ~6 hours using ~90GB of memory.

[1] I stopped the process early, as it was taking too long

vitorbaptistaa··on Ask HN: Those with success using GPT-4 for programming – what are you doing?
I had to optimize some Python code to reduce its memory usage. After trying all ideas I could think of, I thought about rewriting it in a different language. Copied and pasted the code into ChatGPT 4. Tried Rust at first, but there were too many compilation errors. Then I tried Go and it worked perfectly. For the next couple of weeks, I used it to improve the Go code, as I've never used Go. It gave me great answers, I think maybe once or twice the code didn't compile (I used it dozens of times per day).

I'm now using the optimized Go code in production.

vitorbaptistaa··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
Exactly!
vitorbaptistaa··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
Back in university, a friend and I built an old-school arcade. It as a wooden chest with an old PC inside running Linux. We then got the arcade buttons and joystick for 2 players, connected to the serial port, and wrote a Linux driver to understand the presses as a keyboard. We even added a coin door that accepted quarters. At the time, I was the president of the CompSci student body. We had a room in the university, where we placed the arcade. There were some great games between classes, and it gave us some funds for random small stuff (printer toners, etc.).

Another one is https://shellshare.net. I use Linux for a while, and from time to time someone would ask my help with something. If you ever tried debugging a problem in someone's else terminal over the phone, you know how frustrating it can be. So I built it as a way to share a read-only stream of your terminal with a one-liner command.

It's been a while since I used it myself, but there are some people that use it for teaching in universities.

vitorbaptistaa··on Show HN: Firefox Addon to Filter NSFW Content
I'd love an extension like this to remove useless news from my favorite newspapers. Anything related to murders would be a great start.

I want to read the news, but lately there has been so many news along the lines of "X person was murdered in a city far away" that it's becoming unusable.
