vital101··on Ask HN: What are you doing to improve your health?
Kettlebells 4 days a week, bodyweight and/or running exercises 2 days a week, and 1 rest day. I've also taken care to eat a lot healthier this past year and watch my portion sizes.

I also use a standing desk for about 70% of the day. Even since I started doing that 3 years ago I've found my general fitness to be much higher. YMMV

vital101··on The Benefits of a Lunch Hour Walk
I don't walk at lunch but working from home allows me to get a quick kettlebell workout in every day at lunch. 30 minutes of kettlebell work, a shower, and then back in the saddle by 1pm. My personal findings reflect what the article says: I'm in a better mood, more efficient, and generally just better at my job after my lunchtime workout.
vital101··on Git client vulnerability announced
For those using HomeBrew on OSX: brew update; brew upgrade git;

Then, make sure that HomeBrew versions are taking precedence: echo export PATH='/usr/local/bin:$PATH' >> ~/.bash_profile

vital101··on Orion flight test rescheduled for tomorrow
NasaTV looks like its struggling with load. Use http://www.livestream.com/spaceflightnow for a better stream.
vital101··on Do the Most Hipster Thing Possible – Move to Des Moines
If looking for a city sized similarly to Des Moines, check out Grand Rapids, MI. Lots of great art, craft brews (Founders Brewing anyone?), and a small startup scene. You're also a 30 minute drive to Lake Michigan in the summer, which is nice when its warm enough to experience it :)

vital101··on Welcome to a comet
I'm not sure about that status of the harpoons, but I generally use http://reddit.com/r/space to keep up with all of my space related news. Article quality is generally very high and there are a lot nice folks over there who answer questions in the comments.
vital101··on Rails JS frameworks: Ember.js vs. AngularJS
I do this often with Angular, except using Django as a backend with Django Rest Framework helping out with the API. I find that separating concerns like this leads me to much better code.
vital101··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Google-Apps Custom Domain Email Hosting
I've been using https://www.zoho.com/ and its been working out quite well. Although I only need one account at the moment.
vital101··on Startcraps
Leave any company you aren't happy with, not just startups. Sometimes you and the company may not get along. Maybe you were a bad fit and neither of you knew it. Or maybe it truly is a Startcrap. Either way, find another gig and move on. Everyone will be better off.
vital101··on Show HN: RedemFit – Incentivized Corporate Wellness
RedemFit is an incentivized corporate wellness program. Employees earn points by working out and then redeem those points for rewards. Healthy employees cost less to insure, work harder, and take less sick days. Strong incentives create a healthy workforce.

Demo Login Information:

- Company Employee: u:regularuser , p:demopass

I recently did a soft-launch of RedemFit on /r/startups over on Reddit, got some feedback, and have since added the most requested features and tweaked a few things.

I'm looking for any sort of feedback that HN can give me. I believe I have a market here as I've already had a sales call for this without actually requesting it :)

Things of note:

- I'm targeting the insurance brokerage market as thats where I've seen the most interest so far.

- White Labeling: This is something that people commented on the most. They really wanted it, so I implemented it.

- Custom Domains: Goes hand-in-hand with white labeling, but can be used without it.

- 3rd party integrations: Using the HumanAPI for this, and has worked great so far.

Once again, thanks for the feedback HN!

vital101··on Ask HN: First sales call for new startup, any pointers?
Good point. I should pay attention to my history a bit more. In this case I could probably whip together the solution in a week or two, so it might as well already be built ;)
vital101··on Ask HN: First sales call for new startup, any pointers?
Great tips. I have this sneaking suspicion they may end up asking for a "white labeling" service, where they throw their brand on my product. I'm 100% open to this, but its not supported yet. Is selling something that isn't even built yet common?
vital101··on Ask HN: What info do you web scrape for?
I've attempted to do this before for a side project (RateMyProfessor, but for textbooks!) and its incredibly hard to do accurately. One of the (many) issues that I ran into was that some schools still have all of their course data PDF format, in addition to the problems Cyranix listed above.

Much respect to any person or team that has to wade through this stuff.

vital101··on Restoring a 14-year-old website
I'm happy that this post and restoration have allowed so many people to visit the fond memories of their youth. In 1999 I was 13ish, so just about to enter high school. I'm also a web developer today thanks to the fumbling around I did back then!
vital101··on Restoring a 14-year-old website
Sorry, my $10 digital ocean vps is kinda struggling. The blog is hosted on WordPress, and being cached via memcache. But GA real time tells me about 300 people are on concurrently which its having trouble handling. I'll be periodically rebooting the box until I can access a computer.
vital101··on Restoring a 14-year-old website
I apologize friends, I wasn't expecting this much traffic and had just stepped out. Working on getting this back up now.

Edit: It's back up. Sorry for the inconvenience!

vital101··on Ask HN: Review my startup - Smooth Bulletin
Thanks for taking a look. Its mostly for searching for courses, majors, degrees, etc. Ideally we'll have tight integration with existing ERP systems, but I think prices we'll need to rise too (you're probably the 20th person to tell me that today!).

I agree with you about ditching the high school offering and then differentiating price a little bit more based on college size.

I know that I want to sell this to colleges, but the harder part is how much is going to cost to sell. I think smaller colleges are the lower hanging fruit, but it's still going to be a quite the courtship to make the first sale.

vital101··on Ask HN: Review my startup - Smooth Bulletin
Good point about the mac image. I was worried that people would want to see the "10,000ft" view, but it turns out you can't see much from up there.

I will make it a lot more obvious how to start testing the admin.

Thanks for the feedback!

vital101··on Our modern web theme goes live
That would be nice. If they won't cull the comments, I'd like to see them make the lower rated comments harder to see, or have some kind of warning near them that says "If you use this, you're going to have a bad time."
vital101··on Ask HN: Review my startup - Smooth Bulletin
I'm so happy that you mentioned that. I've been busy building out the infrastructure to do just what you're talking about. Unfortunately it's pretty complicated so it's taken me awhile. The first step was the ability to get majors/minors in the system. My next step is making the degree programs more useful by being able to add required core courses, etc. Once that is in place, I can move on (finally) to graphing out paths for students.

I already have linkage between pre/co requisite courses, so almost everything I need is in place. I'd also like to integrate with universities existing systems so that I can have what courses the student has already taken available and merge that into the graph automatically.

Additionally (rambling now), I'd like to get cost per credit hour info from the university, and allow students to say "I'd like to get a B.S. in Computer Science from University X. What is the cheapest way to do this?" and have the option of mapping things out from a start at a community college and transferring versus starting at the 4 years school.

Thanks for the feedback!

In general I like the new design. I do have one thing that I'm not wild about:

http://www.php.net/manual/en/

The page that you are dropped into for that is not very friendly. I much prefer the layout for a sub-page once you've clicked a link.

vital101··on Ask HN: Review my startup - Smooth Bulletin
I have talked with a few people that work in campus IT about their catalog management systems. The general feeling is that they wish there was something better out there. I have a little experience with ACMS from the admin side, but most of my experience comes from the student-facing side, which is generally pretty awful.

I completely agree that I need to understand the administrative side of this better. My only problem is that I can't get access to existing systems. I'll probably need to find people who deal with this on a daily basis to get that information.

I do plan on having a nice REST API for importing from old systems. I also intend to write middleware for importing from the current big players. I was inspired to add that to my to-do list by how easy BitBucket made it to transfer all of my private repos over from GitHub.

Good point about existing ERP systems. I'll have to look into how integration with the big players(SAP, etc) in that arena works.

Thanks for the feedback!

vital101··on Django 1.4.9 and 1.5.5 released
In my experience it isn't the Django upgrades that go poorly, but all of the other packages that I'm using. A day to upgrade from 1.2 seems reasonable. A day to upgrade the rest of your packages might be significantly more time consuming.
vital101··on What It's Like To Be Ridiculed For Open Sourcing A Project
This is a lot what it feels like to blog about something technical, and then have someone swoop in and question not just your article, but your parentage and your IQ. It hurts a lot that people can't be constructive with their criticism, but I hope that Heather continues posting open source projects. Haters 'gonna hate, you just can't let them bring you down.
vital101··on Fixing the computer guy posture [pdf]
I've taken to standing about 60%-70% of my day. It seems to have helped a lot of the back and hip problems that I've had. I also do strength training 3 times a week with kettlebells which has also helped.
vital101··on Show HN: Book Cheaply - Don't buy textbooks you don't need (side project)
I'm trying to slowly scale up. Adding schools is easy enough, but I also need to get all of their departments, their instructors, and their courses. All this info can be gathered by scraping, but format varies greatly on a per school basis. I also want to get reviewed seeded on a per school basis before I move on to the next one. I allow the users to add most of that info, but the more info they have to enter the higher the barrier to entering a book rating is.
vital101··on Show HN: Book Cheaply - Don't buy textbooks you don't need (side project)
Are you suggesting an option to add a few different links to Wikipedia or a similar resources that were used instead of the book? If I understand you correctly, I like that idea a lot.
vital101··on Show HN: Book Cheaply - Don't buy textbooks you don't need (side project)
This makes a lot of sense. I'll see about tweaking the wording to encourage more "doing" and less "don't-ing".
vital101··on Flatstrap - Bootstrap with no rounded corners, gradients or drop shadows
I find it odd that they used rounded corners in their documentation, even though not having rounded corners is one of the key features.
vital101··on Show HN: Book Cheaply - Don't buy textbooks you don't need (side project)
Good find. They have an affiliate program so I'll look in to integrating with them as well.
