viswanathk··on How to Think for Yourself
So many high school analogies with pg. One wonders if he is trying to say something to his high school self..
viswanathk··on CERN approves plans for a $23B, 62-mile long super-collider
> The aim is to start construction of the new tunnel by 2038

Not in my lifetime, I guess.

viswanathk··on The future of Java and OpenJDK updates without Oracle support
They are quite together if you're building a platform. You usually have C++ doing all the CPU intensive work/low level IO which is exposed through JNI for any higher level stuff (like web).

JNI >>> Any other interface to C/C++.

viswanathk··on The future of Java and OpenJDK updates without Oracle support
Looks like you have not worked much on C++. C++ is literally one of the worst languages for undefined behaviour and when something does go bad, the tooling around the language is so horrendous that it takes days to debug something that can be done within hours in Java.

I spent close to a week on data corruption that would have never been possible in Java.

C++ is not for the weak of heart. It's like the wild west. I have since moved to the civilisation of Java and quite happy here.

viswanathk··on Bitcoin's decentralised nature is not a feature, its a bug
Repeal of Glass-Steagall act actually allowed the government to somewhat step away. Some of the well capitalised commercial banks were able to absorb the losses of the investment banks by buying them out when the price was low, and then making more money once the panic ended.
viswanathk··on Google for India: Building India-first products and features
I get about 100GB Up/Down for about $18, at 30Mbps.
viswanathk··on Google for India: Building India-first products and features
Data in India is really cheap. You pay <$7 for 30GB of data and the speed is not bad at all (about 20-30Mbps)!
viswanathk··on Employees are happier when led by people with deep expertise
If you're talking about Flipkart, then it's not really a tech company as much as it is a retail company these days. So it is expected to have more MBAs in important positions, or in places where they can prioritize like an MBA.

No wonder Amazon is kicking their ass, and their last few product launches were nothing short of a disaster.

viswanathk··on Does CEO of a tech company need to know programming?
He will be respected by his technical employees if he does. Its not compulsory though.
viswanathk··on Reddit to thwart the NSA’s tracking plans with a gift exchange? Yup.
Nothing less expected from Reddit.
viswanathk··on Show HN: I made a web app to help me keep habits as weekend project. Feedback?
I am using localStorage. This allows me to expand to tabbed habits in future, if people find them useful
viswanathk··on Show HN: I built this (my first) Facebook application in 5 hours. Is that slow?
see my reply to cleverjake. This is not false modesty. This is really first try with facebook sdk.
viswanathk··on Show HN: I built this (my first) Facebook application in 5 hours. Is that slow?
shit. i should have debugged properly :(
viswanathk··on Do you actually use desktop workspaces?
Thanks for the idea. I changed it. And you are right actually. For a full desktop environment such as Unity or Gnome3, virtual desktops do not make that much sense as it does for desktop environments such as awesome.
viswanathk··on If Google and Facebook were cities
Yep exactly :D
