visualR··on Kickstart the GNUstep Project
If thats all it was you may as well have linked to Java Swing
visualR··on Kickstart the GNUstep Project
Thats a pretty lame criticism considering the campaign was started by 1 guy who is an engineer, not into marketing.
visualR··on Kickstart the GNUstep Project
I doubt very much developers interested in GNUStep are like your typical consumer/game player. They read.

Is the price of $667 a play on what Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak sold the original Apple I for?
visualR··on Show HN: Cappuccino-like framework in JavaScript, here is my start on "Atlas"
Thanks for the advice. You are right, each object is serialized as a JSON structure (freeze dried) and then instantiated when the GUI loads. Definitely that JSON should be editable.
visualR··on Show HN: Cappuccino-like framework in JavaScript, here is my start on "Atlas"
It wont be called Atlas. Right now Im just relating it to Atlas, which like you said is defunct. Im just in the early stages of developing the framework and tools and am looking for feedback.
visualR··on Show HN: Cappuccino-like framework in JavaScript, here is my start on "Atlas"
Thanks. I am going to rebuild Atlas, but not in Cappuccino, in a new JavaScript-only (no Objective-J) framework im calling cupertino.js. Just looking for feedback on the idea right now.
visualR··on Plot.ly: Matlab for the Web
In my experience the public at large is satisfied with Excel/Numbers, while scientists prefer their power tools like R or Matlab. Perhaps you should pivot and build something like RStudio but for numpy.

Is there a monetization strategy? Seems like I see things like this popup every couple months. Is there really a demand?
visualR··on In defense of <canvas>
The only thing slow about Canvas I've found is when the canvas area needs to be resized : i.e. canvas.height or canvas.width changes. Drawing itself hasnt been an issue for me.
visualR··on Why I Develop For The Mac
Im just saying your giving up a major marketing outlet if you arnt on the MAS. Of course you can go it alone, but since it is a MAC app, that would be foolish.
visualR··on Why I Develop For The Mac
Correct but if your not on the app store, who will know about your app.
visualR··on Why I Develop For The Mac
This is exactly why I stopped developing for native. If you want to fix a bug or tweak/add one little feature its a huge ordeal. Plus the 30% tax on non-recurring revenue. I'm glad he's doing mac apps. Less competition in the web space.

I agree with your sentiment, everything is still OK right now. But if I am forced to use Apple's equivalent of a "Metro" interface, I am done and going to Linux.

>> People act as if Jobs was a tyrant badmouthing random innocent people. He wasn't. He was actually pretty genial most of the time. What would set him off was not when someone made an error, but when someone did the wrong thing and they knew it was wrong at the time, but did it anyway.

Tell that to the elderly lady at Whole Foods who got demeaned because she didnt make Steve's slushie just right.

visualR··on Cappuccino - The Node.js Project
When Motorola bought 280 North, they also got Atlas. For whatever reason Motorola never continued Atlas/made it public. Most Cappuccino developers instead use Interface Builder to layout the interface and the tool nib2cib to bring it into a Cappuccino project.
visualR··on Cappuccino - The Node.js Project
This is exactly what you do in Interface Builder, although its visual.
visualR··on Cappuccino - The Node.js Project
Ive gotten the Objective-J compiler and custom build system to run on Node.js. Node.js is much better than Narwhal, this is purely an engineering decision.

If youre comparing Interface Builder to Visual Basic, you just dont get it.

> If native mobile apps end up de facto replacing the open internet

Mobile is just hyped. Once companies realize that people who access to the internet solely through their phone can hardly be monteized, well be back pre-iphone in the hype department.

visualR··on Ask HN: How do you stop regretting?
Early 30s is not too late. I know a guy going back for a MS in Stat who is 40s -- no previous data related jobs. Stop comparing yourself to other people, just work on things youre passionate about. Most people dont. You are already successful if you can do that.

You made a game. Youre competing with every other game and other forms of entertainment. Id say regroup and refocus on writing software that solves pain points. Read patio11.
