vishaldpatel··on How I Landed A $50/hr Side Gig With Little Effort
1. I wouldn't offer a salary to someone who I felt wasn't good enough for a job. If the job needs people skills, then he'd only get an offer from me if I thought he already had them / could gain them.

2. Pointing out to someone that they are very successful and can afford you isn't insulting. Pointing out to someone that they'd be on food stamps if you don't throw them a bone is, because it belittles them.

3. Dick move all around.

Don't forget that salary negotiation is supposed to be just that - a negotiation. You arrive to it when most other terms of employment seem acceptable.

vishaldpatel··on Why you should start a company in.... Seattle
He forgot to mention that all the rain means you'll stay indoors and do more work.
vishaldpatel··on Java, Postgres developer job. Location? The South Pole

vishaldpatel··on How You Can Directly Help Haiti
What sort of expertise / skills would you be looking for in volunteers?
vishaldpatel··on Ask HN: Plans for 2010
Don't wait until next year.
vishaldpatel··on Ask HN: Plans for 2010
I like Romanians. Always gotten along with em'. Never met one I didn't like (seriously). So I figured, why not ;)
vishaldpatel··on Ask HN: Plans for 2010
Existing things: MobileFolk - my current project / startup. Swim, run, workout. Keep learning Spanish and practicing guitar. Read books.

New things: Learn basic Romanian. Meet more iPhone (and Android) developers in the Bay Area and in / around Toronto / GTAA - always looking to grab a beer or lunch :). Learn more about market research (you can never learn enough).

vishaldpatel··on Ask HN: College Graduate, Job Prospects
Feel free to send it my way - I'll be happy to proofread it for you (email's in the profile).
vishaldpatel··on Ask HN; How to gain control over frustration?
And if meditation is too artsy for you... I used to work on doing tricks with my soccer ball for a while after work everyday. They weren't easy, so I basically didn't think about anything else and essentially held one state of mind the whole time -- pretty close to meditation, I'd say. Headstands work too, until they become easy ... then you can move onto handstands! :D
vishaldpatel··on Apple’s WWDC-Closing ‘Fuck You’ to iPhone Developers
Sure it is... we're entrepreneurs and you're pointing out something that seems to be selling. This is useful - even if it is a bit obvious - it helps guys like me think outside the iphone box a bit.
vishaldpatel··on California State Controller: Out of Cash in 50 Days
Don't employees have to pay a chunk of their cheques into the State pension plan?
vishaldpatel··on Apple Rejects EFF Updates App, because it links "objectionable" youtube video
I think we can all agree that people generally have short attention spans. I think we can also agree that quite a few HN readers are iphone developers and users. The developers among us develop on the iphone platform because the users like it. It isn't wrong to remind users about the hardships developers face in bringing quality apps to them. And I'm sure that most rejection still go unannounced ;). Hopefully this will lead to a) Apple being more reasonable or b) Users moving onto a platform that is more developer friendly.
vishaldpatel··on What was your darkest hour like?
Nothing, as long as it satisfies you.
vishaldpatel··on Ok HN, You Were Right. Unpaid Internships Are Wrong
And if "quitting" feels like being a loser... then MOVE ON instead.
vishaldpatel··on Ok HN, You Were Right. Unpaid Internships Are Wrong
Quit. They don't value you enough to want to pay you. Get the hell out of there.
vishaldpatel··on The Case For Working With Your Hands
Yup. No point in limiting yourself to just one set of tools ;).
vishaldpatel··on Ask YC: How to form a Delaware C-Corp?
I was also curious what sort of business licenses the State of Delaware would impose upon a start up software company. Thoughts?
vishaldpatel··on Ask YC: What is the best way to learn Perl?
My day job is basically as a feature programmer for a perl based web application system. Trust me. Learn python / ruby for web applications. Or stick to PHP.

The thing that made people love Perl is the same thing that makes more mature people hate it. The language is so flexible that you will invariably write bad code. You need a very strong set of coding standards if you'd like to write perl systems that remain maintainable.

Learn python or ruby to make your web app. Learn C# / ASP.Net if you'd like to be on a windows stack.

vishaldpatel··on Zombo.com - YC applicant - feedback wanted
Ah Zombocom - a true pilgrimage. I end up there atleast a couple of times every year.
vishaldpatel··on Ask YC: Best areas for startups to relocate to Silicon Valley?
Berkeley Pluses: - Everything is in walking distance if you live around downtown - from the grocery shops, to the many many good, cheap (compared to East Coast) restaurants, and the BART (subway) that takes you to San Francisco in 20 - 25 minutes.

- Office space, the last time I checked was about $2 per square foot. Check: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/search/off/eby?query=&minAsk...

- University town - the campus libraries are among the best places are awesome. The Berkely gym and the downtown YMCA here are also really excellent.

- The weather is really nice - not as cold and windy as SF, and not as hot as San Jose. It warms up and cools down very gradually here - and usually stays between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius. - The parks and the marina are great. There is pretty good hiking, and the sailing club here will get you sailing (or wind-surfing)! For cheap! (www.cal-sailing.org).

Cons: - It is dirty in places - it doesn't smell though. - There are lots of homeless people here - quite harmless. - Everything shuts down early. Berkeley is a town more than a city. There are two 'night-clubs' - only one is worth any time - the other is a dirty (in a bad way) hole in the ground. Only a couple of bars and restaurants are open late - thankfully they're quite good. Lucky for you, San Francisco is less than half an hour away by public transit. There's a bus that drives back every half an hour all night long.

Non-issues: - "Activism". big deal - some people like to protest - they don't come in your way or bother you. You are invited to participate and the locals can be engaging and opinionated if you talk to them. This is one of the most educated places I've ever lived in - that is a good thing.

Conclusion: - Berkeley is great! You can raise your kids here. You can live in a relatively quite place but live very close to two main cities - Oakland and San Fran - so you can go crazy and then return to relax and work in a quieter place.
