vishaldpatel··on "So, what do you do?"
So, what do you do? > I'm a programmer

Oh, who do you work for? > Myself. I started a market research company with my best friend a year ago.

Oh, like a start up? > Yeah, I guess you can call it that. We do some contract work on the side to pay for things.

Hows it going so far? > Pretty good! We've tried out some things that haven't worked out and we're trying out new things. What about you, what do you do?

- At this point, 99% of people feel as if they know everything about you. So the game, you the more intelligent entrepreneur with your max hax0r people skillz, is to find something interesting about them. If you manage to do that, then you might just have a new friend, and not just another business card.

vishaldpatel··on Wealth anorexia a.k.a. hating yourself because you're not Larry Ellison
Location location location. Where there are more eligible men than women - men have to work harder.
vishaldpatel··on The End Of Stuff
Some things are cooler / more fun than others. Like, wearing a watch or using a real compass.

I have a notebook in which I write directions to a place before going there for the first time. Lame, I know... but every time I have a get a copilot, they end up looking through the book. I doubt they would have done the same if the directions were stored in a smartphone.

Cash is still king.

Come on, give him a break.
vishaldpatel··on Why you might not want that high-paying cybersecurity job
TLDR Version: Its really not bad. You'll make pretty good money, in what is otherwise a 9-5 job in a large company. You won't get to use as many toys, and you'll sometimes be told to leave your own toys at home. The job will also involve dealing with people and politics.

vishaldpatel··on Ask HN: Is the "adult space" a career-killer?
From what I understand, those videos have been well-exploited.
vishaldpatel··on Rate my startup: Gantto, easy to present Gantt charts on the web
What do you have against flash as far as this tool is concerned? How and how much would having such a tool but entirely in HTML5 influence your buying decision?
vishaldpatel··on Ask HN: Is the "adult space" a career-killer?
http://www.unicefusa.org/partners/ambassadors/alyssa-milano....

I'm glad you didn't deny the fact that she made porn :P

vishaldpatel··on Ask HN: Is the "adult space" a career-killer?
What are you afraid of - making enemies? Thats far too into the future. Alyssa Milano is a UNICEF Ambassador now. She used to make porn.

Do you have a moral obligation to working for this company? Does this company's mission fit into your moral outlook as a human being right now?

vishaldpatel··on Tell HN: I'm launching in 30 days. No matter what. Hold me to it
Since this is a democratic model of governing a company, is there a way to create a coalition to slowly overthrow the governing members and take over the treasury and ownership of the project? How would this then affect the actual ownership of BetterMeans - are all current members also equal shareholders?
vishaldpatel··on How to Focus
So, this works for me:

Step 1: Clear your mind: - Close your eyes, take a deep breath and say "oooooooooooooom" ten times. Try to keep your voice as steady as possible - concentrate on trying to keep the intensity and pitch of your voice consistent.

Step 2: Open your eyes slowly. Your mind will feel clear and you can now focus on the task at hand.

vishaldpatel··on Poll: When do you usually go to bed?
Thanks, mom! I'm going to bed now...
vishaldpatel··on Poll: Are you a Programmer?
Actually its kinda funny: Ever since I started a company with a friend of mine a year ago, I've been calling myself a programmer, even though, officially, we're both co-CEOs of our little startup.

Before that, when I had a day job as a programmer - I used to come up with longer descriptions and alternative titles for what I did at the firm that I worked at.

Odd huh?..=)

vishaldpatel··on India's $35 tablet computer
They're putting the reputation of India's best engineering schools on the line, so it can't be far from $30.
vishaldpatel··on Ask HN: Music while coding
I switch between alternative and new metal, electronic (house / trance), and hip-hop / rnb. Pandora.com is awesome.
vishaldpatel··on Ask HN: Surprised by your revenue? Easier than you thought?
Hehe.. anyone thats started a company here knows full well the importance of marketing... especially those who've failed =)
vishaldpatel··on Ask HN: How do you name a startup?
Start building it first under a code name.. name it later. Over time you'll come up with more names and some of them will turn out to be pretty good and previously unused.
vishaldpatel··on Ask HN: How do you deal with suicidal thoughts ?
Watch more movies and listen to more music that makes you feel good about you.
vishaldpatel··on To-do app + RPG = EpicWin
Doing a simple task me meditative. Its doing complex but boring tasks - like writing crud code... now that... should count for ridiculous amounts of exp
vishaldpatel··on Stop complaining and pay programmers more
Docs, mechanics, skilled tradesmen, lawyers,...hell even accountants have location knowledge and expertise that is location specific.

- You won't drive your car cross country to a cheaper mechanic. - You won't get a lawyer from India to represent you in America. - You don't go to a doctor... well thats changing isn't it? Too bad doc education still costs so damn much in America.

Its about group supply and demand. Don't forget that homes cost and arm and a leg and that a programmer in a particular neighborhood should be able to afford a home in that neighborhood and should charge accordingly.

vishaldpatel··on Finland makes broadband a 'legal right'
Interesting. I wonder if every Finn has the right to food, clothing and shelter.
vishaldpatel··on What, Me Exercise?: The Hacker Exercise Regime
Here's what I think about exercise: Find a sport or activity that'll make you move: salsa dancing counts! ;-) (golf doesn't.. unless you're walking the whole damn course :P). When you get bored, find another fun sport or activity! =). You might even end up finding complimentary activities (I like to swim and go sailing - swimming helps when your boat capsizes, hahaha).

As far as eating is concerned, here's what I suggest:

- Figure out what you usually eat.

- Now figure out what you need (in terms of proteins, vitamins, minerals etc..), and figure out whether your current diet is providing what you need.

- If you have been getting everything you need in your current diet but are gaining fat, figure out what you can start cutting back on.

- If you are deficient in your daily intake nutrients but are also gaining fat, then figure out what you can add to your diet to complete the right nutrient intake, and what you can start cutting back on.

All this diet and exercise shit is a bit evolutionary. Just stick to it, build it up over time. Don't be too hard on yourself but don't give up or go easy either.

vishaldpatel··on 5 Ingredients/10 Minutes cookbook - great recipes for a busy hacker [pdf]
The soup recipes are really good. Thanks =)
vishaldpatel··on Google should allow for the sharing of email filters.
Many thanks =)
vishaldpatel··on Ask HN: Average coder at dead-end. What now?
Time to become a rockstar, mate. I say fill in whatever holes you think you have in your skill (if there are any) and market yourself as a rockstar. You're only a rockstar if you act like one.
vishaldpatel··on Nomadic: Zipcar for apartments, for people who only need the Internet to work.
How is this different from couchsurfing?
vishaldpatel··on "Login" is not a verb
Login - is a noun. To login is actually "to log in" and thus "I logged in"..
vishaldpatel··on Please Review StockChatBoard.com: Digg + HN for stocks
Hahaha.. circular. By the time news happens.. its already too late =)
vishaldpatel··on Ask HN: Are you still an information addict?
Wrote a block-hosts file and a free-hosts file. Wrote a script to copy the appropriate host file onto /etc/hosts as needed. I run the script when I want to start work and when I'm finally done work.
