Started out young - hacked on Sinclair's speccy (48k - terrible rubber keys) and the BBC micro. Learnt everything from the local library and the books that came with the computers. Learnt assembly, C and C++ and ended up playing with PCs in the DOS era. Moved to linux (slackware originally).

Ended up quitting school, working through the dotcom boom and bust and found myself in finance at various BigBank places before going back to education to do maths then comp sci. Still in finance tech these days.

Still a hacker - language agnostic. Dabble in hardware and low level stuff in my spare time. I love the library though it's not what it once was.

virtual_void··on Any other introverts worried about how they'll fare in post pandemic life (cont)
I very much agree.

It feels like people who crave social interaction are demanding that everyone be around to fulfil their needs. Especially in the workplace.

I found the pandemic to have allowed me to do some of my best work, in a quiet space at home. I understand that isn’t for everyone, so I don’t demand everyone else remain at home. Would that they might extend me the same courtesy.

Some people clearly do want it. It happened. If trump didn’t want it he could have stopped it with the platform he has / had.

Why are you now arguing about covid?

The point of your argument is that violence is inevitable and therefore good?

virtual_void··on Twitter Confirms It Halted 'Hang Mike Pence' as a Trending Topic
Perhaps saying there was no violence is overstating it but it was a very different scale with very different intent abhorrent in either case.

People are undoubtedly angry because they are seeking to be treated equally. To not be murdered by the police. There’s still such an astonishing amount of injustice and yet they didn’t try to overthrow the government.

The crux of my argument is that these two groups are not comparable. One seeks equality and the other seeks to go against democracy and attempt a coup. This is what i mean by false equivalence.

This is still false equivalence.

BLM Didn't use violence to achieve their goals. Quite the opposite they were consistently attacked by police dressed up like the army, heaving people off the streets.

Where were the police in DC?

This wasn’t a protest it was a violent attempt to overthrow.

Call it what it is indeed.

When people use violence in the name of a cause then i think the cap fits.

Also i think you’re making a false equivalence here. There is a not insignificant fraction of them willing to be violent because because they either don’t (or don’t want to) understand how democracy works.

I think it’s fine to lump those people together as domestic terrorists.

If you haven’t already found them, Adrian’s Digital Basement, Jan Beta and Noel’s Retro Lab are very enjoyable additions to that list.
virtual_void··on Are people with dark personality traits more likely to succeed?
That’s much better than Europe and at least a bit more like it. Nurse practitioner i think is about 50k at best in the uk.

I guess the rather different way that healthcare operates between the two regions has a lot to do with it.

Still not as optimistic as the lower bound stated on the parent post which was more like 240k (assuming 48 weeks).

virtual_void··on Are people with dark personality traits more likely to succeed?
I’m astonished it’s that high. I’d be interested in seeing a source for your data point.

To be clear, i believe they deserve a high level of compensation it’s just that they’re usually treated badly compared to the societal benefit they provide.

Certainly in the uk the median annual salary is about £26k. The above figures would mean US nurses are earning ~12x more.

I didn’t dismiss it out of hand.

I looked at the evidence and found the court submission and posted it here as a counterpoint that shows what an absurd claim this is.

virtual_void··on [dead]
If you pull on that thread you’ll find that’s utter nonsense.

Not to mention that the hand recount would have revealed it.

Please stop posting unsubstantiated nonsense.

virtual_void··on Ask HN: What can replace my iPod for podcast listening?
If you’re referring to the hamburger-looking button then that is the playlist button.

Hitting it cycles through the playlists and speaks the name of each one.

virtual_void··on Ask HN: What can replace my iPod for podcast listening?
Yup. I often use it to take podcasts on my run.

There can be some that won’t sync even though you can play them on spotify. This is apparently due to some licensing restrictions. The bbc is the main offender which i find enraging.

I’m confused as to the difference.

No snark intended.

I’m likely missing something.
