vintageclothldn··on Ask HN: Where are people sharing their blogs these days?
There's a lot of great ideas here already. The only other source I regularly use is marginalrevolution.com, although it's somewhat niche.
vintageclothldn··on Ask HN: How do you consume HN?
I casually visit a couple of times so often my jumping off point is the best of page:

https://news.ycombinator.com/best

vintageclothldn··on Ask HN: What fiction/non-fiction book should everyone read on the topic of CS?
Personally really enjoyed Code: The Hidden Language of Computer Hardware and Software
vintageclothldn··on What are people using for email?
Fastmail with custom domain for professional and Gmail for personal.
vintageclothldn··on Ask HN: Is ChatGPT Down?
Down in the UK for me
vintageclothldn··on Ask HN: Have any of you started a non-tech business?
Yes. I'm a co-founder of a Second Hand Clothing Start Up - https://streetgarms.co.uk/. We sell second hand streetwear from brands like Supreme, Palace and The North Face through our own website, and we've achieved top seller status on Depop while working toward power seller status on eBay.

The second hand clothing market is booming, particularly with Gen Z having a fundamentally different attitude toward pre-owned clothing compared to older generations. We've bootstrapped from just 3 items to over 1,500 in 4 years. Some interesting challenges we've faced:

- Scale is particularly difficult in this space - Finding software solutions for automation is challenging - Depop's API is - severely limited - Managing thousands of unique SKUs with single-unit inventory creates complex operational issues

Overall it's a solid business in a rapidly growing sector. Coming from a tech background, I'm fascinated to see how the scaling dynamics here differ from typical tech startups. The unit economics and operational complexity create an interesting contrast to pure software businesses.

vintageclothldn··on What Books do you enjoy in physical form?
Poor Charlie's Almanack: The Essential Wit and Wisdom of Charles T. Munger released recently through Stripe Books. https://press.stripe.com/poor-charlies-almanack

I read it for the first time on PDF and it is so much more enjoyable in print format. The recent Stripe Press edition is particularly well-crafted. The physical format lets you more easily flip back and forth, underline key insights, and digest Munger's wisdom at your own pace.

vintageclothldn··on Ask HN: Which Books or Articles Do You Keep Rereading and Why?
I try to re-read Poor Charlie's Almanack by Charlie Munger every year. Always find something very valuable in it.

vintageclothldn··on Ask HN: Where to advertise my SaaS other than Google?
There are several alternatives worth exploring:

Alternative Search Engines:

- Bing Ads (Microsoft Advertising) is your best immediate alternative for Western markets - often lower CPC and less competition - Yandex Advertising for Russian markets (if relevant to your market) - Baidu Marketing for Chinese audiences (if relevant to your market)

Resolve Google Issues:

- Try reaching out to a Google Ads account manager - they can sometimes help resolve account blocks that automated support can't handle - Consider working with a certified Google Ads agency who might have better support channels - Document everything meticulously to demonstrate your legitimacy

Rethink Social Advertising:

While you've found social media ads ineffective, generally paid social is effective for most client, so you might want to reconsider with a different approach to define your audience:

- Target people discussing your problem space on LinkedIn/Reddit - Use detailed interest targeting on Meta to reach people in relevant industries/roles

vintageclothldn··on Ask HN: Best non-fiction book you read in 2024?
It's the most wonderful time on the year..
vintageclothldn··on Ask HN: React, Vue or Angular?
I would personally use React out of the 3 as it's the best maintained, although it depends on the complexity of the project and whether something lighter could be better.
vintageclothldn··on Ask HN: What are some of the best books you’ve read about memory and the brain?
I found David Eagleman's books, especially Incognito, to be really good introduction to how the brain works.

"Proust was a Neuroscientist" is a delightful look at how non-scientists throughout history (artists, dancers, writers) have intuited truths about how parts of the brain work that have since been proven by science.

vintageclothldn··on Ask HN: What are some books or courses which had high ROI on your career?
How to make friends and influence people by Dale Carnegie - Learning how to talk to people in a way that make them feel validated has been the most important lesson I've learned for working effectively in teams.
vintageclothldn··on Ask HN: Why has Goodreads fallen so far in Google Search results lately?
It's generally difficult to say exactly why but Google did a core update on Aug 22, and also a helpful content update which added a new ranking signal

vintageclothldn··on Ask HN: Good Resources for Finding Temp Jobs
Agreed with this. The vast majority of my work has come through word of mouth. I've only found time wasters on Upwork who generally have high expectations and low budgets.
