Facial recognition, already deployed in some areas, essentially precludes the need for an ID at all.
Once you can uniquely identify anyone with close to 100% accuracy just by looking at them, you don't need to worry about silly things like IDs

The issue you're forgetting to mention is the fact that physical DVD drives won't be around for more than a few more years, you then need to make sure you have one in working order on a system that can use it

One of the issues back in the PPC days was lack of applications on Macs. Partially due to the chip, as more apps supported Intel architecture. As soon as the switch to Intel happened it made porting existing software much easier.
Assuming they move to ARM. I would bet my morning coffee that the plan is to merge iOS and OSX then start porting over mobile apps into the desktop system as opposed to requiring existing software packages to rewrite desktop software for the new platform.
