vinger··on Ask HN: Should I pass on a new job because they want me to sign a non-compete?
Contracts are not oral they are based on legal agreements. They are court documents.
vinger··on Ask HN: Should I pass on a new job because they want me to sign a non-compete?
Animals have honor and men have brains who make situational decisions.

Not playing by the rules of business is not honorable it's naive. A contract is a business agreement. If a provision isn't legal the contract usually asks that only that clause is removed enforcing the remaining contract. If something isn't enforceable in your opinion but the company is asking for it and refusing it could kill the deal it wouldn't make sense to threaten the deal over an issue you know will be resolved in your favor?

In reality companies who make you sign a non-compete will glady hire from an organzation they compete with.

If you somehow know the non-compete isn't enforceable and you don't tell them is that amoral?

There is gold in that computer you are using. I would say gold has value.

Bitcoin as a working system has a value.

vinger··on Boston public schools suspend advanced learning classes
Now you introduce a new social aspect where you could have freshman in senior classes and via versa. Would that encourage more relationship between 14 and 18 year olds friendship or otherwise and does matching maturity matter?

Does that mean some are finishing in 2 years and others in 6. In some places you have a cutoff of 21 years where you need to go to adult school at that age.

It makes Apple products highly valuable in China in an economy outside of the government's control. Having a bigger black market in China encourages freedom. It would be a huge deal.

vinger··on Why Uber Engineering Switched from Postgres to MySQL (2016)
Does postgres still require a separate user to access the db.

I remember this being a limitation in 2008.

That forced user creation always pushed me to mysql because I hate having separate users for each service because you still have to manage and account for these extra accounts.

utf8mb3 isn't a broken subset. It includes characters in the basic multilingual plane which is fine for 99% of cases.

uft8mb4 uses more bytes than necessary for most. You get 255 varchar limits with uft8mb3, I think you only get 192 characters with uft8mb4.

And sometimes we need to check our facts before we make ill informed decisions.

A world class pianist makes 25 to 75k per show. Far more than any developer lazy or not.

A concert pianist makes 50k a year. Getting a seat is the hard part.

And someone majoring in math can go as far as someone majoring in engineering. Your college doesn't teach how to code, you need to do that on your own.

Cutting off the pipeline goes against the green strategy. Putting thousands of trucks on the road adds many jobs and raises the demand (those trucks run in gas).

Saying that you have enough production (with a negative million plus barrels a day) and then saying that peace needs to be made with Iran to protect supply from going to China seems like an extremely risky strategy with very little potential of cutting off China.

The Germans made a series of unsophisticated decisions in the east that cost them when Hilter started to assert direct control over the army. Not really comparible. The number of tanks do.

When it came out it was don't save cookies so I can't be tracked.

Now that it is known google can track you outside of stored cookies it should probably be relabelled to no persistant cookies mode and leave the idea of incognito. Using that word makes it seem like you are using tor.

I agree with you in theory but I'll point out you do measure bounce rate and reoccuring vs new visitors and staying time at the same time to give you that exact view.

But I agree they measure the wrong end points or rather they measure too many end points for me to make sense of which one is better. The goal of overall traffic sometimes works against keeping bounce rates low or staying time high.

In the end you would think products sold matters. But an over promising website will over hype and under deliver causing returns or bad reviews which may affect future sales. The message has to describe the product but still meet the market's demand.

Last time I provision on linode and do at the same time a created a ubuntu box. I found I had to setup a few additional things in linode. Linode never felt as polished which is fine.

The one thing that made do better was they had a datacenter in my region.

vinger··on My experience as a Gazan girl getting into Silicon Valley companies
I was taken by that statement that more than half of the people you considered experienced engineers you also judged them to have no ability to code.

But you said I shouldn't assume your process is broken. If those are your results the process is broken.

Either your pipeline of experienced engineers needs to be fixed.

Or your ability to judge either who is experienced

Or your ability to judge who can't code for the life of them.

Your comment made it sound like 51% of experienced ngineers looking for a job can't code when the truth is 51% of your experienced candidates can't. It is broken..

I'm sure Dalia is great.

"other youngsters from Palestine performed better than at least half the experienced engineers I've interviewed in the past."

This comment caught me a little off guard. You are saying that these young people with no experience perform better than half of the experienced engineers you interview.

My question is what is wrong with your hiring process? It sounds broken.. What part of the process are the experienced developers failing in? What are you asking for in candidates that these experienced developers lack but can be found in this group of inexperienced engineers? Curious about salary, would you say Dalia friends makes the same as an experienced developer?

vinger··on TikTok and the network effects of creativity
You do rely on an algorithms on the story feed and main feed.

Reels are kinda misplaced. They are so short but require so much navigation. Why not just post a short video. Ig live videos are more important and need the first class treatment (a seperate search, a ig live discovery page)

vinger··on Daft Punk Break Up
It's great I can go to New York and watch many of the original cast but it is also great I can find them in London, Toronto, Vegas, probably Toyko.

Who they are can change as long as they look and act the same. It brings down costs and allows the creator to scale.

It's better than plays because shows in different cities will have different actors and everyone knows.

But you do lose the ability to promote based on individual people. And for plays that can be a huge draw. Stars will bring people.

Think of how much bigger blueman group coull be if each had a different personality. Perhaps a cartoon could have been made.
