vinceyuan··on SoftICE: a kernel mode debugger for Windows
I followed a tutorial to crack WinZip with SoftIce. And then I tried cracking WinRAR with SoftIce but failed. That's all I did with SoftIce.
vinceyuan··on The Cheap Phones Quietly Winning the U.S
ZTE is as big as Huawei. Both of ZTE and Huawei manufacture telecom equipments. Umi is a tiny company. That's why ZTE phone is much better than Umi phone.
vinceyuan··on The Cheap Phones Quietly Winning the U.S
> The basic (world-changing) functions of the smartphone (location services with GPS, decent point and shoot camera with you at all times, web access on the go, etc.) are present in both devices.

Generally, cheap ($30) phone's camera is awful. $200 Android phone's camera is good. iPhone 6's camera is excellent. (Though I am using iPhone 6 Plus, I still think iPhone 6 Plus is too expensive.)

vinceyuan··on Ask HN: Why are fewer companies doing remote
I have the experience of working remotely. The biggest problem is in communication. I think that's why most companies don't accept remote.
vinceyuan··on Yahoo Offers New Mobile Chat Service Featuring Silent Video
It's weird. When people are texting, most of the faces remain wooden. Nobody wants to look at a wooden face.

Students wouldn't like to use it in the classroom because video is data-consuming.

vinceyuan··on Truck firm wants to deploy delivery drones on the move
> The idea is simple enough: as the truck makes its rounds, the roof-mounted HorseFly UAV selects, transports and drops off a parcel right outside the recipient's front door.

It's a very good and practical idea. The truck becomes a moving honeycomb or the aircraft carrier. Cool!

vinceyuan··on The OnePlus 2 pushes the boundaries of how cheap a flagship phone can be
> For $300, you got a well-made, nice-looking phone with cutting-edge hardware and few compromises to be found

I don't think it is nice-looking. It's not ugly. It's just normal. It looks very similar to some Android phones.

vinceyuan··on The Verge's web sucks
I did the same thing several days ago. But after 30 seconds, the web page did not finish loading. It has downloaded 7+ MB. I closed it.
vinceyuan··on What's the Matter with San Francisco?
This One Intersection Explains Why Housing Is So Expensive In San Francisco [1]

vinceyuan··on Woman recruited by Google four times and rejected, joins age-discrimination suit
"Google favors workers who are under the age 40" I am thinking about my career path. I don't know if a company will hire me as a software developer when I am 40+ years old. I do understand the companies like young people.
vinceyuan··on YC Fellowship
Any idea?
vinceyuan··on Ask HN: How does Weiqi AI work?
I think so too. Maybe another reason is we can use 'go func' in this programming language to start a concurrent function.
vinceyuan··on YC Fellowship
[off-topic question] I know YC asks the oversea team which got YC investment to move to Bay Area. But how do they deal with the visa? I don't think all of them have H1B or L1 visa. I heard a team moved to Bay Area with B1/B2 visa. Is it legal?
vinceyuan··on What happens when you talk about salaries at Google
It's very common that people with similar skills have different salary, especially in a big company.

Big companies have the rules in salary increase rate for the current employees, but are willing to pay more to hire new employees from other companies.

For example, A's salary is $5000 and yearly increase rate is 5%. Two years later, A's classmate B is hired. B's salary is $6000. A's salary is $5512.5.

Similar thing happened to me. Luckily I got an exceptional salary increase years later. But eventually I left that company after 6-year service.

vinceyuan··on Ask HN: How does Weiqi AI work?
"they used the name "Go" for the language" just because Google named that programming language 'Go'. Personally I don't like the name 'Go'. It's a verb. It should not be used as a name of a programming language or a board game.
vinceyuan··on Ask HN: How does Weiqi AI work?
[off-topic] As a Chinese, I do know what Weiqi (围棋,圍棋) is. I was surprised to see the English name of Weiqi is Go. (When I saw Go in this post, I thought it's Golang.)
vinceyuan··on DigitalOcean Raises $83M in Series B Funding
DO is much cheaper than AWS.
vinceyuan··on Show HN: “Who is hiring?” Map
Excellent work! Why are there so many startups in San Francisco?
vinceyuan··on Ask HN: Is shareware dead?
Shareware becomes free apps with in-app purchases.
vinceyuan··on How We Moved Our API from Ruby to Go and Saved Our Sanity
tl;dr Results: "We could downsize our provisioned API server pool by about 90%." "the time it takes to run our full integration test suite dropped from 25 minutes to 2 minutes, and the time to do a full API server deploy with rolling restarts dropped from 30 minutes to 3 minutes. The go API server restarts gracefully so no load balancer juggling and prewarming is necessary."
vinceyuan··on Inside a $34 smartphone
> This Huami H3 smartphone cost me $34US (210RMB) in January. It’s sold with a 5 inch screen, Bluetooth, WiFi, 4G cell connectivity, Android 4.4 and an 8 core processor. It's very cheap but good. And actually the processor has 2 cores.
vinceyuan··on Using Go at The New York Times [video]
I didn't choose Java for my backend just because it uses too much RAM. The VPS(s) with large RAM are expensive.
vinceyuan··on Using Go at The New York Times [video]
Is 0.3% error rate caused by GC pause?
vinceyuan··on Using Go at The New York Times [video]
Are Go servers at New York Times or other companies impacted by the Golang GC pause? I am learning Golang and want to know if Golang GC pause is a significant issue in production.
vinceyuan··on Microsoft Edge: Building a safer browser
I don't think it is a problem. The new browser's name is not Edge. It's 'Microsoft Edge'. The samsung phone's name is 'Galaxy Edge'. Now tech companies like to use the compound name, e.g. Apple Watch, to avoid the trademark issue.
vinceyuan··on The Anti-Drone Drone
I was just joking... Take it easy.
vinceyuan··on The Anti-Drone Drone
In 2016, the must-have feature of a drone will be anti-anti-drone.
vinceyuan··on Seastar: C++ framework for high-performance servers
"Applications using Seastar can run on Linux or OSv." Will Seastar support OS X? If No, developer using Mac has to install Linux VM to development.
vinceyuan··on On problems with threads in Node.js
Got it. queued != blocked Thanks!
vinceyuan··on On problems with threads in Node.js
Does it mean the async functions about file system operations are not really asynchronous in Node.js? The whole node.js server will be blocked if the number of file system operations is bigger than the thread pool size. :-(
