vincentperes··on The 600-year-old origins of the word 'hello'
I believe Allo is inherited from french, that was used already before edison/phone as interjection.
vincentperes··on An analysis of DeepSeek's R1-Zero and R1
You constantly have to correct an AI when using it because it either didn't get the question right or you guide him towards a more narrowed answer. There is only more to learn.
vincentperes··on Zoom is making its staff return to the office
I'm listening to audiobooks since years while driving and take it as a personal time before reaching my family. Very enjoyable.

vincentperes··on Zuck's live grilling on Facebook Live
What was meant is that you can access most of Youtube's content without having to log in, whereas of Facebook which requires you to be authenticated most of the time to access content.
vincentperes··on Bird populations in French countryside have fallen by a third in fifteen years
"horrible" is going a bit too far? It is 20% higher than average. http://www.lepoint.fr/sante/en-france-les-agriculteurs-se-su...
vincentperes··on The U.S. wind industry now employs more than 100K people
environmental impact should be taken into consideration, it's most probably a good move for future generation
vincentperes··on The first web site
Maybe the HTML part but not the CSS, there are browser specific attributes and use of 'em' for example.
vincentperes··on Crude Falls Below $30 a Barrel for the First Time in 12 Years
I would see it the other way around, where real and stable economies don't depend on oil export. We will see them in the coming years. An economy that mostly rely on one and unique natural resource can only suffer in the medium term.
vincentperes··on Running costs for running a web app
Thanks for the information, I find outrageous to have to pay $20 per month just for the SSL endpoint on Heroku.
vincentperes··on Show HN: Fictionhub, a place to share fiction
You might get a big traffic from HN and don't get much out of it. People might just go, read a page and bookmarked it or think they will come back later. But they usually don't. If I was prompted or had a field where I could enter my email address to get the best story of a genre I picked at the end of each week, I would gladly enter my email address. Convert!

vincentperes··on Introducing Progressive Equity – Increase employee ownership as company grows
You don't cash in straight after an IPO, most of the time the current owners of shares have to wait X amount of time before they can sell shares. I guess this help keeping the company stable.
vincentperes··on How We're Feeling: Tweet sentiment
This is nice. Could we have different size of circle according to how frequent it is?
vincentperes··on Angular JS Kinda Sucks
why is that? almost all browsers support JS, it's like saying we shouldn't force users to have CSS!
vincentperes··on Ray Kurzweil is wrong: The Singularity is not near
Nobody can answer those questions, because we don't understand much of the brain yet. Beyond philosophy, you need to understand what is really YOU.
vincentperes··on Show HN: A Github for writers?
interesting! any idea on where I could find writers that would help on my story?
vincentperes··on iPad Air
Don't feel sorry for us, we are very happy :) I'm so happy when I can show my latest pictures to my grandma, read my comics (all in one device), or look up for questions I have / inspiration on internet... all of this I was doing before with different mediums (books, photo paper, dictionaries etc.). So yes it is enriching my life as I have so many things in one small device that I can look up in a few seconds and can carry around so easily.
vincentperes··on The Facebook experiment has failed
1. I feel that the pages I'm following bring me a good value. When it comes to people, if somebody is posting crap, I usually remove it from my timeline. I don't think Facebook is meant to exchange good ideas in public, but to share information. I don't want to be philosophical, but being bored is like everything else in life, you keep taking public transport, because it's useful, not that you are in love with it. 2. Facebook is not meant to build a community around a theme, you get information and feedback on pages but nothing more. Dedicated website on games, astronomy etc. were there before and will be there after. 3. I'm living abroad and share every week with my family on a Facebook private group, I just find the feature great!

In general I think that experiences in life are so different and all require a different set that you simply can't aggregate them all on one and unique website. "The next network could be about making it easy to talk to people you don't know so well." is just called the web?

vincentperes··on Pharo 2.0 Released
agree, really hard to find out what it is, the only work that I catch and gave me a hint is 'virtual machines', but still pretty vague
vincentperes··on Bomberman massively multiplayer in HTML5
nooooo, don't post this kind of link here!! my working day is over ;)
vincentperes··on Stop Sharing Quotes. You're Not Better Than Anyone.
The dalai lama?
vincentperes··on Flight: A lightweight, component-based JavaScript framework from Twitter
Javascript front-end framework are really new (3 years old) compare to web frameworks. The need is also quite different. There was a need for a Javascript framework and we can say that jQuery won the battle. We will have to wait few more years to see most of the web app running with a Javascript front-end framework, then you will maybe have a winner!
vincentperes··on Introducing HelloSign for Gmail
For that case, giving an idea on how the money is gonna be made (advertisement or other) would give more trust. People wouldn't wonder "for how long" if it comes from Google or a big company as it is a trusted company and it has big chances to last.
vincentperes··on Squash
I had the same problem, don't want to watch the video as I am at work and I read quickly the headline... didn't get what it was so I closed the page. I got back to HN and read your comment and only got back to the website at that point to finally figure out what it is. So a little headline wouldn't be too much below the title (and I'm part of the target audience).
vincentperes··on How to Fold a Julia Fractal
wow! I heard many times that great mathematician can picture theories in their mind... and that for some theories only few people on earth are able to picture them. I always wondered if that's true and for people using math on daily basis (mathematician or others) it's very important to picture what you are trying to achieve or only numbers matter? Thanks!
vincentperes··on Google Revenues Sheltered in No-Tax Bermuda Soar to $10 Billion
Don't be angry at Google, be angry at government. It's years that companies are using this - I would call it a government failure. What I don't understand is why - please tell me why - the EU is not doing anything to fix it? Irland got billions from EU to get to the level where they are today (they were to poorest country in europe before), don't tell me that the EU hasn't any way to press Ireland or Netherland to change their law. Again, it needs to go through the press to shake it a bit.

But isn't it also the same problem in the US? Some states have very low taxes on business profits. So you can see very often companies having offices over there?

vincentperes··on Why Explore Space? A 1970 Letter to a Nun in Africa.
Somebody said "It's not by looking at improving the candles that we would have discovered electricity.". Like fundamental research, a lot of people are having a hard time to understand that it is a long term investment.
