vince_refiti··on How Google Handles IT for Its Workers
I suffer this fate every day. It is made worse by being locked down so hard I can't even use PowerShell. All I have is Notepad++ for development, searching, mass text manipulation...
vince_refiti··on French soldier’s room unchanged 96 years after his death in the first world war
The whole thing exudes the great sadness of the loss of a child. War sucks, but we keep doing it.
vince_refiti··on What kids around the world eat for breakfast
In Australia, McDonald's is exceptionally busy in the morning for the drive-through and the sit-down areas. Lots of parents bring their children there before school. At least the one in Albion, Brisbane.
vince_refiti··on Genetics and intelligence differences: five special findings
I do not know why the positive manifold is as it is. But it still seems like it is a precise measure of an inaccuracy.

What I am getting at in a roundabout way is that I cannot find any credible definition of intelligence that is not dependent on the these tests. If intelligence were able to measured some other way that corroborated these tests, then I will be more likely to believe them.

vince_refiti··on Genetics and intelligence differences: five special findings
It is more correctly circular reasoning. The psychometric measure g does not break this circle at all. I will never believe in "intelligence tests" until this circular reasoning can be broken.

Q: What is intelligence? A: Thing that is measured with intelligence tests.

Q: What are intelligence tests? A: Things that measure intelligence.

vince_refiti··on Emacs and Vim
Yes, I know what you mean. But I had to make an exception for DrRacket. It was just so much better than any vim plugin I tried.
vince_refiti··on The ship that failed to change the world
Luckily, this also failed to change the world. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear-powered_aircraft
vince_refiti··on Emacs and Vim
Can I ask why you don't use DrRacket? Write your code in the definitions panel and hit f5.
vince_refiti··on I've never seen a language's style guide recommend avoiding comments before
Comment only magical code, but don't write magical code.
vince_refiti··on An Illustrated Book of Bad Arguments
"What I got is a bunch of back-handed cartoon insults towards the groups the author dislikes."

Ad hominem?

vince_refiti··on How the Gut's "Second Brain" Influences Mood and Well-Being (2010)
This was proven practically by George W. Bush, as reported by Steven Colbert here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7FTF4Oz4dI
vince_refiti··on Guile and Delimited Continuations (2010)
Continuations. Second only to Monads for having so many bad explanatory articles written about it.
vince_refiti··on Why Ada isn't Popular (1998)
Inviting others to critique your work. Great to see. I will have to have a serious look at Rust sometime then.
vince_refiti··on Many ‘strict herbivores’ will eat animal matter on occasion
I observed this in a few humans myself.
vince_refiti··on Ada, C, C++, and Java vs. The Steelman (1997)
I read that a few times (and a few times in the past) and I find it more difficult to comprehend and reason about than the programming language itself. So, if I build something today and I want to distribute it WITHOUT distributing the source - can I do it? Yes, or no?
vince_refiti··on Ada, C, C++, and Java vs. The Steelman (1997)
For me, I have started to tinker with it because of the increase in the availability of documentation, especially from Adacore. Google will show you some high quality pdfs out there. There's also Adacore University. Also, the IDE - GNAT Programming Studio, is pretty good. I even used it to write some C.
vince_refiti··on Air traffic system failure caused by computer memory shortage
This scenario wasn't unit/functional tested then.
vince_refiti··on Hugelkultur: the ultimate raised garden beds
Make sure you bury it with enough soil. You will get termites (in sub/tropical Australia at least) if you leave the wood exposed or too lightly buried. There is also the matter of snakes - they like to live in wood piles.
vince_refiti··on Home Demo at Google VC's (Kevin Rose) House on Potrero Hill
Not supporting picking on Kevin Rose, but what to do when a large influx of money and moneyed people causes the cost of living to skyrocket for the locals?
vince_refiti··on Chicken Scheme internals: the garbage collector
I was looking at Chicken Scheme just the other day also for a financial app. Tried and utterly failed to load the bb and iup eggs to get a gui going. And this was in vanilla Ubuntu. Had to go back to Racket.
vince_refiti··on Tamil Nadu state departments asked to switch over to open source software
Dr. Geo! - http://www.drgeo.eu/home. Go (Pharo) Smalltalk!
vince_refiti··on Tamil Nadu state departments asked to switch over to open source software
Yes. You'd think that they would have moved to open source already if they could. Impending end of support for XP was no secret nor unexpected.
