vinayan3··on Xcode 8.3 produces binaries 3x larger than Xcode 8.2.1
Despite this claim. It doesn't feel like it happens. Maybe, apps aren't writing the Cache files to the right place and that's why they aren't being cleaned up.
vinayan3··on Ask HN: Which non-technology book has influenced you the most and why?
Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse

The main character Siddhartha experiences many different lives in search of true enlightenment. The book is so well written and way certain things are described are incredible.

vinayan3··on Dell’s 32-inch 8K UP3218K Display Now for Sale
Hopefully, they drop the price on the 32'' 4K monitor to under $1,000. That'd be a great deal.
vinayan3··on Apple starts rejecting apps with “hot code push” features
Can you get confirmation that CodePush won't be impacted?
vinayan3··on What Books Are Product Hunt’s Top 500 Makers Reading?
Any list for top hacker news posters?
vinayan3··on Ask HN: Is S3 down?
Yes. Go for a walk and interact with people in the community. You might meet someone interesting and learn something as well!
vinayan3··on Ask HN: Is S3 down?
Also, interesting everyone is posting that various sites which are down in this thread. Feels like the internet is down!
vinayan3··on Ask HN: Is S3 down?
Yes it's down for me. I can't access files stored on S3. Also, the service I run is hung trying to store files on S3.
vinayan3··on AMD’s $499 Ryzen 7 1800X Beats $1700 i7 6950X with 1-Click OC on Air Cooling
If you were thinking of this as being a cheap CPU for a GPU training rig. It only has 24 PCI Express lanes. It might be better to stick with Xeon CPUs because most have 40 lanes.

Machine learning model training. A large buffer of data waiting to be trained speeds up training. Especially with training on the GPU the biggest bottle neck is reading the data from disk.
vinayan3··on Iranian MIT student goes home over break, denied return for spring semester
Chuck Schumer made a statement yesterday. http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/schumer-tears-are-running-...

Media might not be covering their response more? But, I don't know what they could do in Congress.

vinayan3··on Show HN: Bitesnap – Deep Learning Meets Food Logging
Thank you for checking out Bitesnap. We really appreciate the feedback and comments.

We have a blog post up explaining more about Bitesnap and why we built it. https://blog.getbitesnap.com/introducing-bitesnap-a-smart-ph...

vinayan3··on Show HN: Bitesnap – Deep Learning Meets Food Logging
Predicting portion size is something we’re actively looking into. One of the reasons for getting Bitesnap out to a larger audience now is to be able to collect more training data for doing this. We’re also experimenting with allowing users to specify portion sizes in more natural units -- for example by comparing a serving to the size of their fist -- and we’ll automatically convert these to conventional units. Finally, we’re also building more tutorials and help content into the app to educate people on better estimating portion size (among other things).

Thanks for trying the app!

Thank you for trying the app and the feedback. We will add metric units for entering your details.

> How does it handle differentiating different types of bread, which have differing carbs?

We don’t nail everything yet but we allow users to refine the predictions. So in your example we might predict bread and let the user pick the type.

> How does it handle a thick layer of butter or another fat put on the sandwich in the Avocado Toast example, which would presumably be below the visible avocado?

We don’t predict portion sizes yet. At the moment we give a sane default and ask the users to adjust it. The next time you eat the dish we bring back the past meal so you don't have to specify the details again. We’re hoping to start predicting some of those details once we get enough data from our users.

Thank you for trying it out and the feedback.

We’re initially targeting the US market, and it was easiest to get serving data in imperial units to start. We are planning to add sensible serving sizes in metric units as soon as we can.

Hey overcast, you can download the app on the App Store or Google Play and try it out for yourself. Let us know what you think!
vinayan3··on Project Valerie – The world's first triple display laptop
Reminds me of the Dell XPS laptops which were like bricks, incredibly heavy. Not to mention the battery life was awful and the power brick was huge. Two of my college roommates had them and I remember they had huge backpacks and lugged them around campus.

I guess the people who would want these laptops don't care too much about portability or battery life?

vinayan3··on A recruiter sent me a message in code. I fixed it
It could be the code was sloppy on purpose to illicit a response from you.
vinayan3··on Reddit is down
It's down for me as well.
vinayan3··on Amazon EC2 Elastic GPUs
I read another comment on /r/machinelearning it's likely that this won't be for CUDA. They would have highlighted CUDA support instead of just showing OpenGL. Furthermore, they only showed Windows maybe Linux might not be available?
vinayan3··on Amazon EC2 Elastic GPUs
Exciting. Hopefully, the GPUs are made by Nvidia and support CUDA.

I'm curious what the pricing will be.

vinayan3··on CyberChef – A Cyber Swiss Army Knife
Thanks this is awesome. For some of this stuff I usually use the Python REPL. But why go through the hassle when it's all here for stuff like date time conversions etc..
vinayan3··on Ask HN: What's your dev machine setup?
I use a Macbook Air from 2013 driving 2 24'' monitors at work. I have to use a USB 3.0 to DisplayPort adapter. It's not ideal. At home I use a 27'' monitor.

I would like to upgrade but the Macbook Pro that came out is expensive for what you get. I would like 32 GB of Ram. I probably will pretty soon.

Also, I have 2 desktops at home which I SSH into. One is a Haswell Xeon machine with 8 cores, 128GB of ram, 2 GPUs. I have another i7 machine, 4 cores, 32GB of ram, and a GPU. I do machine learning and data processing on them.

vinayan3··on Ask HN: What's your dev machine setup?
That's some serious screen real estate. Can we seen a picture of this setup?

Also, what do you have on 7 monitors?

vinayan3··on This Pizzeria Is Not a Child-Trafficking Site
Do you know where the specific detail of child trafficking was manufactured? The NYT article doesn't say it.

Also, did the people who made this up think it was a joke? I really don't see how else a hair brain idea like this could be made.

vinayan3··on How to get the wine you really want
I will say that some people's palate are quite limited. They only identify a few things as good. I've met people who basically wouldn't eat a green vegetable because it was yucky.

I'd expect critics to have eaten enough where they can judge many things.

I do agree putting it into words so someone else could have a sense of what it would taste like and possible be able to say if they would like it.

vinayan3··on Buttery Smooth Emacs
Movement keys in other IDEs like JetBrains is still lacking in my opinion. I haven't seen another IDE which lets you move between buffers(documents) as easily as Emacs. I've tried a bunch of IDEs and will support one style of movement like move split right / left but lack something like move other split etc...

Another thing is that Emacs movement is also very fast relative to some IDEs which sometimes pop up other windows which you have to interact with like in JetBrains Switcher.

That being said if you write IDEs just look at how fast, easy to configure, and complete buffer movement is in Emacs. We want these features!

vinayan3··on Show HN: A curated list of insecure Python packages
Really cool stuff. I love it! Thank you for making this.

A side note anyone using Django should keep up to date. If you see the list of versions and the related packages which have known vulnerabilities you will realize keeping up to date is critical.
