vickytnz··on Suffering From Depression? Don't Do That Start-up
Perhaps a better way of phrasing this is: suffering from depression? Don't do that startup unless you have a safety net (of course, that could apply to people without depression too). Hell, I'd say that applies to doing a PhD (I'm in one right now) or anything that does mean you have to deal with a lot of ambiguity on your own. In those situations it's all too easy for even the most mentally secure person to start neglecting themselves in the service of the work (mentally, emotionally, psychologically, physically), potentially to disastrous effects.
vickytnz··on Ask HN: Independently learning design?
http://hackdesign.org/ is trying to cover this exact niche (I'm following along as a designer just out of curiosity, and it's pretty cool).

Mark Boulton's A Practical Guide to Designing for the Web (Five Simple Steps) http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0956174019/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_f-cg... is also a good start.

There are the usual suspects such as Nettuts, Smashing Mag, Core77, Creative Review, Design Observer (though that's more intense).

For web typography, try http://kaikkonendesign.fi/typography/ and the older (but based on a lauded print book for print type design) http://www.webtypography.net/

Just for the insight into the nutty world of type design, I like the MyFonts newsletter: http://www.myfonts.com/newsletters/cc/201301.html

If you want to get more into IXD, Cooper has a good list: http://www.cooper.com/journal/2013/01/self-study-interaction...

vickytnz··on Speaking up
This sort of stuff also ties into the whole 'fake geek girl'thing as well: http://www.theatlantic.com/sexes/archive/2013/01/fake-geek-g... Or, the pink ghetto: http://tarahunt.com/2011/09/14/a-pink-collar-tech-ghetto/
vickytnz··on Speaking up
One of the more famous incidents was the twitter backchannel for dana boyd's Web2.0 talk http://www.zephoria.org/thoughts/archives/2009/11/24/spectac... (admittedly, she did have a talk that bombed, but that's still no excuse for the angle that the twitter talk took.
vickytnz··on That Daily Shower Can Be a Killer
This stuff particularly applies to machinery: the horror stories about people getting hair and clothing caught in machinery or looking away for a second when using a bandsaw are always a reminder to be careful no matter how many times you've used the machine before.
vickytnz··on Migration flows across the world
Yeah, and a key thing missing from these graphs is ease of movement. As far as I know, Australia is about the only country Kiwis can move to for work without requiring a visa, whereas the UK is getting stricter and stricter each year as it looks towards the EU rather than the Commonwealth.
vickytnz··on Hugh Laurie: Wodehouse Saved my Life (1999)
And if you must watch any season, watch Season 3 as it's them at their peak. (S2 is good, S1 fun but less clear voice as it uses a few Monty Python tricks, and S4 sadly their patchiest as they had guest stars forced on them.)
vickytnz··on No Willy No Woman's Hour
If you look at who was speaking, the man who was trying to evangelise tech was a good example of that. In that respect, having a woman who was evangelising would be a good counterpoint. I'm not entirely sure of the point of the angle of a guy who didn't believe it was a problem was though, given there's an obvious gap still there. Concession: I haven't listened to the interview as of yet. I know they did have a young girl programmer who spoke too, but it was a pre-recorded bit, so didn't have any interaction.
vickytnz··on R is hot [pdf]
"How Did a Statistical Programming Language Invented in New Zealand Become a Global Sensation?". Hmm, slightly condescending title—though I had no idea that it was invented by two academics at the University of Auckland (not "Aukland"!)
vickytnz··on Show HN: I'm 14, please check out my iOS game
As a casual observer (I'm not going to download the game as I have a lot of deadlines!), I'd suggest taking another look at your copy. I think you'll inspire more confidence to buy later on if you take it easy on the caps and paragraph spacing (good ol' Angry Birds is pretty professional https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/angry-birds/id343200656?mt=8 as is Mighty Winds https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/lostwinds/id477973472?mt=8 ). Of course, I don't really buy iPhone games so if someone more experienced in the field tells me I'm completely off I'll instantly concede :)
vickytnz··on Stripe Checkout
An international purchase that doesn't ask for the name on your card though? (I know most check as my CC has a weird format, if it's put in wrong it doesn't validate.)
vickytnz··on Our Django Book is Launched
Had to go speak to my bank, turns out that Gumroad came up as fraud and HSBC froze my entire account! The bank said it should work now but I'm pretty put off.
vickytnz··on Stripe Checkout
Yeah, all good and well … but I just used this with a UK Visa Debit card (which are pretty strict in terms of acceptance) on Gumroad, and not only did the thing not verify without a name, but my card got flagged for fraud and frozen until I contacted my bank! I'm pretty nervous about using it now.
vickytnz··on Our Django Book is Launched
Uh oh, I'm on exactly the same card … wonder what that's about :/
vickytnz··on Our Django Book is Launched
+1 on payment options. As someone with a British credit card, the site won't verify my card (I suspect I need to be able to put my name as per card and address on it). So much for being able to buy it :(
vickytnz··on Aaron Swartz & A Culture of Denial: Depression & Suicide in Tech
I'm surprised that no one seems to have connected Swartz's death to that of Ilya Zhitomirskiy of Diaspora, and the discussions about depression and tech (admittedly startups) http://betabeat.com/2011/11/u-cant-haz-sadz-the-hushed-dange.... While Swartz's death obviously has the connection to the horrible MIT/JSTOR situation, both remind us that tech doesn't always take kindly to those that make a mistake or don't live up to expectations, or pay enough attention to depression.
vickytnz··on Academics posting their papers online in tribute to Aaron Swartz
Things are easier now thanks to academia.edu (which lets you add papers to your research profile), but a fair number of researchers I know of don't even have a personal website.

Also, having worked on websites to do with research projects, I can say there is unfortunately often a hell of a lot of red tape in getting anything going. One website hasn't been officially changed since 2003 despite a dev wordpress site being made in 2009 as they aren't allowed to change it over until all the department groups names are verified … and they keep changing do to restructuring!

vickytnz··on Myers-Briggs: Does it pay to know your type?
I agree on this, and think it's particularly useful to do with younger people for this exact reason. I did it as a Masters student with some colleagues, and it was an eye-opener for showing how many of us had different priorities in terms of work and working styles. (I think for the cerebral types it can also be something of a relief to realise you're not just weird!).
vickytnz··on Guardian kills its Facebook social reader, regains control over its content
Martin Belam (former head of UX at the Guardian, and designer of the app) has a great commentary on its successes and failures: http://www.currybet.net/cbet_blog/2012/12/guardian-facebook-...
vickytnz··on Get a review of your website. Launched today.
Yep, was going to mention this site, never looked as nice but great mechanics for doing reviews (I blew through about 10 on my first go!)
vickytnz··on The Great Python.org Redesign
Looks good. I think I should point out that the current version of python.org is actually pretty decent in the scheme of programming language/codebase sites (there are some real eyesores out there!)
vickytnz··on Customize Gmail's Buttons: Replace Icons With Text
And they're really buggy. If your window isn't wide enough for comfortable, it shifts down to the more compact version which looks terrible. Responsive ≠ cramped!
