I recently ran data analysis on NBA players/games, but realized I had no way to test different algos without using real money.

I developed an app to help me track the performance of my algos on real games and odds data.

P.S. For those who don’t know Quantopian, it was a product that allowed you to back test stock trading algos against years of market data.

My main concern about the SQL approach is that it seems unruly to have 30+ columns for revenue, profit, cash etc...though certainly makes sense from a performance standpoint.

They can be, though aren't always, easier for two reasons. The first is that companies use the phone screen as a way to ensure a candidate reaches a basic threshold before spending the time and money to bring them onsite. So, in that vain it's more preponderance of the evidence that the candidate is good rather than beyond a reasonable doubt (which is the standard of the onsite).

The second is that the phone screen format isn't ideal for either the interviewer or interviewee and the questions themselves are sometimes a bit easier as a result.
