viame··on Teach Yourself Programming in Ten Years (1998)
This is how I do it.

I just started working with python about 3-4 weeks ago. No experience other than html, css3 and graphic design.

So I started doing some online classes but they were so boring and simple that I finished them within a day or two. I actually started doing Udacity's CS class when they teach you how to design a search engine, however half way through I realized that this can be done twice as faster with tools that already exist.

From there I read some Django docs, installed it but django was the most confusing framework to me (not really sure why, just didn't like it)

I stumbled upon Flask and I fell in love. Without any knowledge of how to program and how things work I simply started coding, working with db (postgres). Within a week or so I designed a small blogging application that lets you register users, each user can upload photos, create docs and delete them. I try to code very neatly, and comment on everything. There are a couple of solutions for everything so if I find a better solution I comment out the first one and apply another one.

PS. Don't code for 12h straight. Go out. If I don't know something, I seek for direction, not an answer. I also walk away from my comp and think about a solution, and these tend to be very easy and can be done with a few lines of code. I guess I use my creativity to solve code problems.

Also write everything in small chunks and reuse.

viame··on Traction Tracker: Y Combinator Companies With Significant Traffic Growth
Thanks for putting this together. Also if you can't get your hands on the data from 2012 maybe taking the launch date vs their current Alexa position and averaging this out to see their Alexa growth over their lifespan. That would be really nice to see.

Thanks again.

viame··on Why Startups Should Choose Canada Over Silicon Valley
"In software development, lack of experience can be a really big issue" can you explain this one to me? I hope that someone who calls themselves a senior developer with 20 years experience will know a lot about different technologies. On the other hand if you are a co-founder who needs to code, design, network and do many many other things, software development has nothing to do with it. Your demo will not be using the right technologies. Companies grow and new developers get hired. Code gets re-written and technologies you use, will be changed.

Thanks for sharing your info and experiences. Very helpful to know for the future.
viame··on Vacations and Fingerprint Scans
That's awesome. I might start doing this as well. What do you actually use to wipe them off? Are you cautious of what you touch or try to touch as little as possible?

+1 to this.
viame··on Live map of London Underground Trains
This helps me track my gf while she is working hah! I love this. Do you know the delay on this one? I heard there needs to be a delay of a few minutes when tracking aircrafts? Are you able to confirm? Beautiful work.

And beautiful work to the UK's underground rail tracking as well.

How is this similar to Photoshop? Is it as powerful? Also why does most of its traffic come from India?

So many posts, I cannot read them all however, great post and great answer by Ed. Good luck with everything.

viame··on What happens when you are the doctor on the airplane?
Cool story. My girlfriend is a flight attendant. I hear a lot of stories from her and it is very common to ask if there are any doctors on the plane. What crazy is that people in-flight non stop (we just don't hear about it). Anything from heart attacks to other health problems, even just because they are old.

Sometimes they will put a blanket over the body, sometimes they will pretend that the person is sleeping. Depending on the situation.

I don't really get into the details but that's the scoop.

=)

Very nice. Thank you for this one!

I have to start by saying that the sandwich part is hilarious.

On a serious note, everything that you have said is what I wanted to say so I won't repeat. But how do you deal with this issue? Why does no one seem to be taking action?

This post will get some comments and by tomorrow it will be forgotten. It is your(everyone who agrees with this issue) country, why not do something about it before it gets worse?

viame··on Ask HN: As a Co-founder, whats the best way to drop out of a startup?
As far as 'the human aspect of situation..'

Leave and do not waste your time. Your friendship might end but life goes on. If so maybe it wasn't friendship in the first place. I just left my team. 4 or 5 months ago I pitched in my idea to a group of friends (none of those guys had any real knowledge of programming, design, media, print and they still don't know). About a month ago they all turned into designers, programmers and now everyone knows everything. One of them said that he took nootropics (probably he learned all those things in a week) So I said goodbye and moved on. Since then I started several other projects and I have never been happier. There is no reason why you shouldn't be as well. I know you probably do not have the same issues as I, but in the end it is all about being happy.
