vgeek··on Ask HN: Who is going to win the Kentucky Derby?
Angle of Empire or Verifying. Maybe Mandarin Hero if he draws in.

20 horse fields are chaotic, especially with positioning and horses getting boxed in, bumped, shuffled, going insanely wide into stretch. Forte got a horrible draw, but there hasn't been a better jockey over the past 2-3 years to handle it than Irad Ortiz. The 3/1 (probably ends up going off at 2/1 or worse) isn't that appealing for straight win bets. Maybe key him over those 3?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wisdom_of_Crowds - this is a good book that touches on how accurate predictions by groups can be. With horse racing, in aggregate, the wagering favorite wins ~30% of the time (field sizes vary), or one of the top 2 betting choices ~55% of the time.

vgeek··on Show HN: Google Analytics alternative with the most generous free tier
GA Premium started at $100k/yr ~10 years ago and pretty much only disabled sampling on reports and added additional custom dimensions. This was pre-360 days and was 5x what we were paying for Adobe Analytics. Once you get to those levels, Snowflake/Segment/CDP type platforms combined with your own storage and COTS BI tooling become more appealing due to flexibility and data portability.
vgeek··on Show HN: Google Analytics alternative with the most generous free tier
I wonder if they acquired Urchin (GA, ~2005, so well before they started cornering mobile/browser markets) to start building out and improving their rankings through the data. If they have user data through Chrome, why would they want to keep footing the bill for hosting free analytics for everyone? What easier way would there be to kick everyone off than launching GA4, which seems to be universally despised? Google's liaisons have said that the data from GA was firewalled, but I'm more skeptical, since a lot of times they say things opposite of what many have actually observed.

vgeek··on Pacific Pinball Museum
Any routed machine will require maintenance, but I believe they have 2 or 3 part time techs based on what I have seen in my few visits. I don't recall experiencing any blatantly broken machines, but there were a number with weak flippers and worn/unwaxed playfields. Maybe <5 machines unplugged each visit?
vgeek··on Pacific Pinball Museum
https://www.pinballmap.com/

As already mentioned, The Pinball Hall of Fame in Las Vegas is probably the most well known collection on a national level. Pittsburgh has two good collections-- Pinball PA, with various solid states up to modern machines, and Pinball Perfection, with more old (wood rail) tables and rarer tables like Banzai Run and the often-broken Circus Voltaire.

There is a growing number of public collections of modern Stern/Jersey Jack/CGC/American/etc. typically in barcade or enthusiast collections made public environments-- like The Pinball Garage outside of Cincinnati (the owner builds/built vpin cabinets), The Pinball Museum of Corbin in rural KY (50 or so modern tables, mostly Stern) or The Asheville Pinball Museum. They will all vary in quantity and quality (both in games and maintenance)-- so use Pinball Map and see where your favorites (or rare tables) are actually at.

Visual Pinball X and Zen Pinball are probably the two most prominent emulators.

If anyone likes other coin operated esoterica, Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum outside of Detroit is worth a visit. Lots of 19th-early 20th century rare mechanical attractions and maybe 10 new pinballs.

vgeek··on Don't believe ChatGPT – we do not offer a "phone lookup" service
That is widely known about and freely available to the public, maybe. There are multiple options available for pseudo-LE types with relatively lax access prerequisites.

https://www.robertxiao.ca/hacking/locationsmart/ is an example of one provider's public demo (requiring only a phone number) being used to provide non-consensual location data.

vgeek··on Ask HN: Getting Started with (Q)GIS?
It may seem overwhelming at first, but once you get adjusted to the terms/menus, it isn't that bad. Maybe start using a WMS (there are plugins that add mappacks like https://plugins.qgis.org/plugins/openlayers_plugin/, or you can find free servers like https://tigerweb.geo.census.gov/tigerwebmain/TIGERweb_wms.ht...) to provide the tiles.

From there, you can zoom in to your applicable scale then start adding features (https://docs.qgis.org/3.22/en/docs/user_manual/working_with_... or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDFgP7msjP4) like points and then polylines/etc. for boundaries/shapes. There are lots of rabbit holes to go down, but if you stay in 2D mode and just look up things as you go, it isn't as bad as trying to learn _everything_ from the get go.

vgeek··on How I ruined my SEO
This would probably be captured when looking at GA in the landing page report with MoM traffic going to 0 for once high value pages. If that is the case, a 301 from old path(s) to new is the simplest solution to possibly restore most of the traffic? From what I've seen, lots of the SO scraper sites got crushed late last year, so if the top traffic driving pages historically have not had URLs changed, then maybe investigate that further. If they had their URLs changed, just redirect the old URLs and hope for the best.

@OP, if there were in fact high traffic pages that got renamed, do a CSV/Excel export in GA/GSC/sitemap/etc., and map the old URLs to their new and implement 301's and wait and see if traffic starts to return.

vgeek··on How I ruined my SEO
https://developers.google.com/search/updates/ranking

Your rankings tanking on/around 10/19's update looks like a strong correlation. Your GSC with congruent drops in impressions and clicks doesn't immediately look like KWs you were top 3 for suddenly dropping further down the page-- else impressions would be similar but AP/CTR would just be tanking.

If you're using GA and your traffic doesn't have tons of seasonality, look at the landing page report month over month and see which pages have had the largest drop (can also do this in GSC). Then check in GSC and see what those pages' APs have done over the same period.

What types of links is GSC showing? Google says they don't count bad links, but if they make up a large proportion of your site's backlinks, SpamBrain (their spam AI-- publicly announced more frequently) may bucket your site that way.

SEMrush, ahrefs, Majestic, Moz OSE are all decent for checking who is linking (and maybe disavowing), but LinkResearchTools is probably going to focus more on identifying suspicious backlinks, if that is in fact what is impacting your site.

vgeek··on Ask HN: Best practices for technical SEO for domains with more than 100k pages?
I'm curious to hear other people's takes on this, too.

How unique is the content on each page? What do the crawled and not indexed vs discovered not crawled ratios look like relative to indexed pages? What does linking to the detail pages look like (category pages, similar items)? How much authority do category pages have in terms of backlinks? Page speed issues-- in GSC, can you manage average download time <100ms (makes a huge difference)?

Noindexing may help-- if you just initially handle that based on page content uniqueness and/or presumed MSV potential for the page. Otherwise, based on your language, can you request a quota increase from the 200/day notifications for the Indexing API?

If you like reading about the topic, maybe head to BHW forums (very poor SNR, though) and read about what some of the more unscrupulous people are doing to index MM+ pages/mo and extract some of the less-risky strategies (e.g. don't abuse the news/job posting APIs to get spam content indexed).

As additional commentary, the last 2-3 months have been chaos in terms of algo updates. There was essentially a 30 day period where Googlebot all but disappeared for most sites, then the two HCUs and other random updates tossed in for good measure, stacked with desktop infinite scroll and the switch to mobile first indexing. I can't remember as many changes happening in a single quarter in over 15 years of being SEO or SEO adjacent.

vgeek··on Ask HN: In-depth details about digital marketing
https://ahrefs.com/seo start here for SEO basics. Learn what drives rankings (solid on page, content that people will link to) then get a handle on how building backlinks works-- then farm that out.

Going into an agency and saying "handle my marketing" will mean they will change goalposts (social this month, seo next, ppc after that-- typically focusing on billing you as much as possible while delivering bare minimum results) as necessary and can lead to wasted time/money vs. you handling the critical one off things like title/h1s matching terms with search volume/intent then having ongoing items like content/backlinks handled by a 3rd party.

If you like the outdoors, Lexington is great. Plenty of hiking, kayaking, fishing, rock climbing, etc. within a short drive. It is a college town, so it is way more progressive than the backwoods parts of the state. You will hear different accents for sure. Neat seasonal events like Keeneland, plenty of scenic drives to the smaller surrounding cities (things like bourbon distillery tours and small museums in/around Frankfort) and lots of Mexican food.

Cincinnati is close and has even more amenities like Jungle Jim's (2x giant grocery stores, 100% go here), CAM, theme parks, Union Terminal and niche museums (Sign Museum, VOA, Air Force Museum in Dayton), various pinball arcades, and places like Microcenter.

vgeek··on Ask HN: How to discover high-volume search phrases about a service?
If you have a Google Ads account, the Keyword Planner tool will give you estimates-- broad monthly ranges if you don't have any ad spend, or closer approximations if you have paid spend. It recommends similar terms, too.

SEMRush has a free version where you get ~10 queries per day, so you can explore search volume for terms like "test automation software" and drill down from there. It won't 100% match GKP, but will be similar enough in magnitude.

If you're comfortable using APIs, https://dataforseo.com/ is going to be the cheapest/easiest route. I've used it for past projects, and it is basically like $0.10 (don't quote me, but around there) to fetch monthly search volume for <700 terms per batch. I think they can also provide search suggestions, estimated CPCs/competition indexes and other metrics as provided by Google.

Google Trends is easy/simple, but only gives an index score-- not actual query volume. Lots of marketing people use this for ideation.
