veyh··on Ask HN: What apps have you created for your own use?
I got into programming when I was 14 because I wanted to write addons (in Lua) for World of Warcraft. I've written many things since then (including addons -- my personal Lua repo has around 145k lines of code).

I did make one app public last year: AutoPTT [1]. It's a Windows desktop app that gives you advanced control on how your mic activates and deactivates in voice chat. It's written in C. I'd used it as a CLI for a long time myself but then a few others asked if they could use it too, so I added a GUI and released it.

At the moment, I'm working on a desktop image/comic viewer (in Rust, of course :) because I'm not happy with CDisplayEx.

veyh··on Rust Async Trait Stabilized
How long does it usually take for a feature, after being stabilized, to be included in a release?
veyh··on STM32 Blue Pill as an Hid USB Keyboard
If your project is open source, you can get a PID for free. [1]

I received one for a virtual usb keyboard [2] that I made to work alongside a desktop app. Having a dedicated VID/PID makes detecting the presence of the device easy.

veyh··on Ask HN: How do you monitor your systemd services?
Uptime-Kuma [1] with ntfy [2]. Most of my services expose HTTP so I just have Uptime-Kuma monitor that. But if you have something that is not exposed to the public you can still use a "push" type monitor, and in a cron job on your server(s), send heartbeat to it when everything is working.

veyh··on Structures in C: From Basics to Memory Alignment
You can have memset/memcmp work for individual structs by setting the padding yourself, and to make sure you do it right, on GCC/clang you can use -Wpadded. It's probably best to do that on a case-by-case basis, unless you're prepared to deal with a lot of compiler warnings/errors though.

    #pragma GCC diagnostic push
    #pragma GCC diagnostic error "-Wpadded"
    struct foo {
      uint8_t a;
      uint8_t _pad[3];
      uint32_t b;
    };
    #pragma GCC diagnostic pop

Cactus Comments [1] is another option. It uses Matrix under the hood.

veyh··on Ask HN: What have you created that deserves a second chance on HN?
AutoPTT [1] lets you use voice activation instead of push-to-talk in games and apps where voice activation is not officially supported. I posted about it a few times [2] but I guess it's a bit too niche.

veyh··on AutoHotKey V2 (Breaking Upgrade)
Works fine for me?

v1

    RunWait, % format("{}.exe", "notepad")
v2

    RunWait(format("{}.exe", "notepad"))
veyh··on AutoHotKey V2 (Breaking Upgrade)
As far as string interpolation goes, what's wrong with the format() function? It was already in v1, and hasn't gone anywhere in v2.

veyh··on Nuklear – A single-header ANSI C immediate mode cross-platform GUI library
This is a simple and easy to use library. I made my first immediate mode UI with it recently: https://autoptt.com/

Of course, I forgot to add a frame limit so it ate up a full CPU core at first, but after fixing that, the usage was basically zero.

veyh··on Ask HN: How to tell the world about your project?
I have the same problem. I have a very niche app that I made for myself, then thought I might as well try selling it since there is no alternative to get the functionality.

I can't say I've had a lot of success. Most posts on Reddit get removed as ads and relevant Discords tolerate self-promotion even less. Got one upvote from HN [1] though. Perhaps if I'd written it in Rust instead of C, it might have done better here :)

Bundled. With esbuild, for example.
veyh··on AutoPTT – Automatic Push-to-Talk
Hello HN, author here.

I wrote a command line version of this app several years ago but it was only recently that I decided to make a more user-friendly version when a friend grumbled about how the priority speaker function in Discord would be really useful if it supported voice activation. So I said I could probably help with that, and a few weekends later, this was the result.

It's written in C11 with just a sprinkle of C++. The UI uses Nuklear [1] with a DirectX 11 renderer.
