I was wondering if it had any relationship to the trucks from The Highwayman tv show.

verve_rat··on What we lost when we stopped letting kids leave the front yard
Yes, but as a pedestrian, do you want to bet your life on that?
verve_rat··on What we lost when we stopped letting kids leave the front yard
Maybe, instead of trying to scare (scar?) children you should just teach them to make eye contact with the driver so you are sure they have seen you before you put yourself in the path of their car?

How much of our "safety" culture around kids is because people don't have basic life skills and aren't passing them on to kids?

verve_rat··on The Companies Cutting Headcount for AI Will Lose to the Ones Who Didn't
You don't need to look at other engineering jobs, just look at software engineers out side the US. We make decent money compared to the local market, but we've never had the royal treatment that US devs seem to get.
verve_rat··on Singapore introduces caning for boys who bully others at school
Yes, that is a hard problem that society in general doesn't like dealing with, but the solution doesn't involve letting kids be abused. That's the point I'm making. Don't let kids get abused. I honestly didn't think that was very controversial.
verve_rat··on Singapore introduces caning for boys who bully others at school
What? Your argument is men should be used to violence, so it is ok to hit boys, but women should not be used to violence, so we shouldn't hit girls?

We hit boys, so it is ok to hit boys, but we don't hit girls, so it isn't ok to hit girls?

That's so very, very wrong.

verve_rat··on Singapore introduces caning for boys who bully others at school
Collective punishment is a war crime, I don't know why people think it would be effective on children? All it does is breed resistance and resentment, as you say.
verve_rat··on Singapore introduces caning for boys who bully others at school
So other kids should just be their victims? How is that better?

We should do whatever we can to help kids with problems, but that doesn't include victimising people. Remove the bullies and deal with them elsewhere.

verve_rat··on The map that keeps Burning Man honest
But to bring it back to the topic at hand, the people doing this are forced to by the BLM, so not very Anarchistic.
verve_rat··on Kimi K2.6 just beat Claude, GPT-5.5, and Gemini in a coding challenge
My theory is we will end up in a similar spot to hiring people. You can look at a CV (benchmarks) but you won't know for sure until you've worked with them for six months.

We as an industry cannot determine if one software engineer is objectively better than another, on practically any dimension, so why do we think we can come to an objective ranking of models?

verve_rat··on After dissing Anthropic for limiting Mythos, OpenAI restricts access to Cyber
Yup, we are somewhere between "my model can beat up your model" and "you wouldn't know my model, it lives in Canada".

This is the world we live in.

Worked for uber.

For this use case it matters a lot less if LLMs can solve it. As long as it costs you more to solve the captcha than it costs your adversary to serve it to you, it is still (some what) effective.
verve_rat··on Ask HN: Can HN ban new accounts? or charge money?
Maybe, if you're to ashamed to risk your real name being linked to something you say, you shouldn't say it?

No every opinion needs to be heard, not every thought needs sharing. If you are embarrassed by what you type, then why do you think other people need to read it?

verve_rat··on I cancelled Claude: Token issues, declining quality, and poor support
The US is not the only legal jurisdiction these services are being sold in.
verve_rat··on An update on recent Claude Code quality reports
So? 4.7.1, 4.7.2, etc. makes sense for versioning system prompts.
verve_rat··on Changes in the system prompt between Claude Opus 4.6 and 4.7
Yeah, that really feels like a choice that should be user preference.
verve_rat··on Claude Opus 4.7
We aren't talking about API costs or number of tokens consumed, we are talking about number of tokens in a monthly subscription.
verve_rat··on Claude Opus 4.7
You and I have no way of knowing that.
verve_rat··on Claude Code Routines
We find it incredibly hard to articulate what separates a productive and effective engineer from a below average one. We can't objectively measure engineer's effectiveness, why would we thing we could measure LLMs cosplaying as engineers?

verve_rat··on Show HN: Browser MCP – Automate your browser using Cursor, Claude, VS Code
Yeah, I do wonder if there are any ADA implications with that?
verve_rat··on What if we made advertising illegal?
Is your veil weighted?

It is not equally likely you will benefit from advertising as it is likely you will be harmed by advertising under a veil of ignorance scenario.

verve_rat··on What if we made advertising illegal?
Note: the proposal being discussed is to ban advertising, not marketing.
verve_rat··on Musk-led group makes $97B bid for control of OpenAI
Although... 4D chess move, if a state starts prosecution against Musk, get the DoJ to do it first and then pardon him after the fact.

Double jeopardy would stop the state from continuing with the prosecution, and the pardon means no consequences.

I hate that I consider this an actually possibly.

The people running the demo called it an expert.

Which just demonstrates the complete lack of respect for the domain they are trampling on.

Yup, in NZ a two pizza team would average out to about three people I think.
