verst··on New scalable, fault-tolerant, and efficient open-source MQTT broker
And who is going to maintain it after the original developer moves on to another project?
verst··on Quest 2 is outselling Quest 3
I'm still using my HP Reverb G2 for seated VR (especially flight simulator ). It's a solid choice for that use case. And there is a version of that headset with eye tracking too (which I do not have)
verst··on Apple cuts off Beeper Mini's access
On the Google side the XMPP federation got killed when Google Hangouts and Google+ became the core strategy. The company wanted to focus on "social" (but their own social network) and didn't care about other chat. Back then I worked on the App Engine team which had a XMPP Chat API. When GChat killed XMPP Federation that API lost the majority of target users as a result. I tried to make the case for maintaining XMPP support - taking it up with some VP of Engineering. Alas, nobody cared about the opinion of this random guy in developer support (~2012, early days of Google Cloud)
verst··on Online PDP-8 Home Page, Run a PDP-8
In case you didn't know - the Living Computer Museum was just that, but in Seattle. It was founded by Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Paul Allen (RIP).

The Wikipedia article has a list of the hardware they had: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Living_Computers:_Museum_%2B...

verst··on Find bilingual baby names
I like the concept of this website but this data seems very wrong. Take a look at English and German female names. Abigail is not a German name.

Or take a look at Chinese and English names. Park is not Chinese...

verst··on Google was founded 25 years ago today
A L5 at Google typically makes more than all principal engineers at Microsoft (levels 65-67)
verst··on Transcoding Latin 1 strings to UTF-8 strings at 12 GB/s using AVX-512
There is a RFC (2119) that specifies what SHOULD means in RFCs:

> SHOULD This word, or the adjective "RECOMMENDED", mean that there may exist valid reasons in particular circumstances to ignore a particular item, but the full implications must be understood and carefully weighed before choosing a different course.

verst··on Upcoming .com and .xyz domain price increase
Funnily I even looked up this distinction before writing because I very much know of the difference (see my comment history) but wrote exactly the wrong one. Oh well. Yes I meant registrar, not the TLD registry.
verst··on Upcoming .com and .xyz domain price increase
For now - but surely they too will increase as part of this. What are the rates after the increase which will impact every registry?
verst··on MacOS in QEMU – ARM edition [pdf]
And on M1/M2 Macs that means an arm64 Linux VM. So whatever issue came up here probably would come up attempting to run amd64 containers on regular arm64 linux (assuming the right compatibility tooling is installed).
verst··on Istio moved to CNCF Graduation stage
The CNCF has their own tool - a Grafana dashboard for all their projects:

https://devstats.cncf.io

A bit awkward to use but lots of great info there. I use it every now and then (I'm a maintainer of Dapr).

verst··on Kubernetes SidecarContainers feature is merged
If you create a custom image you would need to create a complex health endpoint that is essentially only considered healthy if all the components baked into your image are considered healthy. This gets harder when you are not the author of the sidecar process on which you rely. With a single image it would be easier to run into a situation where the sidecar process (baked into your image) is in an unhealthy state but your container is not restarted because the app itself is not reporting unhealthy status.
verst··on 2,200 forgotten vintage computers from a barn in Massachusetts
The living computers museum in Seattle was amazing. Volunteers maintained all kinds of computing devices there. Visitors to the museum got to interact with any of the devices.

verst··on Wazero: Zero dependency WebAssembly runtime written in Go
I'm one of the Dapr (Distributed Application Runtime) maintainers which has a wazero based wasm integration. The wazero team contributed this integration.

I just wanted to say that the wazero team has done a great job keeping the integration up to date and have been very responsive. For example, our project also supports Linux Arm32 and wazero was initially not testing against that architecture which led to a compile issue for us. Once we pointed this out they fixed this and added this architecture to their CI tests as well.

EDIT: Also because our project can be compiled for any common O/S and architecture combination the pure Go implementation is critical. We do not accept use of CGO.

verst··on The Mac Pro’s biggest problem is the MacBook
I have an (almost) fully specced M2 Pro Mac Mini. Totally sufficient for all my music production needs (which does benefit from many cores). No reason to get a Mac Pro.
verst··on macOS command-line tools you might not know about
What do you use for assigning it to a key combination? Can it be done without a third party tool?
verst··on macOS command-line tools you might not know about
I should use `git format-patch` instead of creating a mock draft PR (which I end up deleting) and modifying the URL to add `.patch` and then downloading the patch file haha. `git format-patch` would probably be faster :)
verst··on macOS command-line tools you might not know about
A lot of macOS behavior can be toggled by modifying the system component defaults.

For example, turn off autohiding of the Dock from commandline:

defaults write com.apple.dock "autohide" -bool "false" && killall Dock
Include the date in screenshots you take:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture "include-date" -bool "true"
Here is handy website which documents many of the defaults and their purpose: https://macos-defaults.com/#%F0%9F%99%8B-what-s-a-defaults-c...

I like to hide all icons or folders on my Desktop when I need to be more productive or when I'm presenting. This can be done with:

  # hide desktop icons and folders
  defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop 0
killall Finder # restarting Finder is required

  # unhide desktop icons and folders
  defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop 1
killall Finder # restarting Finder is required

I made myself a convenient bash alias for this which lets me simply toggle the desktop on and off Here is a gist: https://gist.github.com/berndverst/6f58c0d6aedddb6c06c23e57d...

  toggledesktop () {
    if [[ $(defaults read com.apple.finder CreateDesktop) -eq "0" ]]
    then
        export SHOWDESKTOP=1;
        echo "Unhiding Desktop icons"
    else
        export SHOWDESKTOP=0;
        echo "Hiding Desktop icons"
    fi
    defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop $SHOWDESKTOP
    killall Finder
  }
verst··on Google is selling all my personal information in Google Domains to Squarespace?
Probably lesser known here is the Charleston Road Registry, Google's entity which manages their TLDs:

"Google Registry is currently offering .app, .dev, .dad, .phd, .prof, .esq, .foo, .zip, .mov, .nexus, .page, .new, .how, .soy, .day, .boo and .みんな. We also own .ads, .eat, .fly, .here, .ing, and .meme among others. We'll be using some of the domains we own, such as .google, .youtube, and .chrome, for Google products, so they won't be open to the public."

It seems Google will continue working with registrar partners, but not operate a registrar themselves anymore (Google Domains). It does not seem like anything will change for this wholly owned registry entity.

In the future we'll be renewing our .dev domains with other registrars who themselves register the domains with Google Registry / Charleston Road Registry as the TLD administrators.

verst··on Japan to open up Apple and Google app stores to competition
Intuitively that is what I would expect too. But information on the subject is all over the place. Could you point to an established source on this subject or expand on how you have confirmed this information?
verst··on Japan to open up Apple and Google app stores to competition
All it takes is to connect to the store or multiplayer gaming services with the customized O/S and you might be a lucky candidate to have your device banned. From all accounts this doesn't appear to be an automated process, or happens rather randomly.

I agree that those who sideload pirated games and then take those games online are most at risk to have their device bricked.

verst··on Japan to open up Apple and Google app stores to competition
I have fortunately not run into this problem yet - but all the Switch homebrew forums, Reddit communities and other sources say that your console becomes completely useless. You aren't just banned from online play and store. According to what I read it seems that even offline use will not work at that point.
verst··on Japan to open up Apple and Google app stores to competition
This is of course cynical, but naturally they wouldn't want to allow sideloading on Japanese platforms which hurt Japanese companies.

I've recently been playing around with Switch Homebrew and sideloading - mostly so I could extract my savegames to play games I own on PC instead using the Yuzu emulator (4K 60fps is more fun). Apparently Nintendo is quite good at detecting modified software on the Switch and will permanently ban and brick your hardware, so you need to go through great lengths not to connect to Nintendo servers when booting the modified or sideloaded software.

verst··on MusicGen-Looper: Generate fixed-bpm loops from text prompts
It doesn't seem to like slow music. I jokingly gave it a prompt to create a wedding ceremony processional music for the entrance of the bride at ~60bpm (I'm getting married in 2.5 weeks). EDIT: Exact prompt "wedding procession bride entrance"

File "predict.py", line 211, in predict raise ValueError( ValueError: Failed to generate a loop in the requested 60.23 bpm. Please try again.

EDIT: At 52 bpm (exact) it seems to work. What it generated would not sound good if looped however. In terms of style.. it sounded a little music box like - celesta or so (think of the beginning of the Harry Potter soundtrack) with some sustained strings and pizzicato strings. That would be appropriate, except the rhythm and chords are fairly random and I wouldn't exactly call this musical :)

verst··on Amazon Backs Out of Climate Pledge, Deletes Shipment Zero Initiative Blogpost
I live in Ballard and frequent the D and 40 buses to get to Seattle center or downtown. Uber / Lyft are insanely expensive now, and I have a zero alcohol policy when I'm driving.
verst··on Microsoft Freezes Salaries for 2023
Not really true for Microsoft. At Microsoft we generally do not get significant new stock grants or refresh grants, even on promotion no new stock is granted often. This may be different for principal engineers or certainly partner level folks - but senior engineers with more than 4 years of tenure will have essentially no significant stock to vest.
verst··on A small number of companies are colluding to cheat H1B visa lottery, US says
My understanding is that H1B1 is not considered a dual intent visa, and so adjustment of status to lawful permanent resident isn't possible. Its history lies in a free trade agreement.

There are also annual limits for H1B1 but they are less likely to be reached. https://www.dol.gov/agencies/eta/foreign-labor/programs/h-1b

Whomever you hire on H1B1 just note you will almost certainly lose them after their visa extension completes.

verst··on Show HN: Learn German with Short Stories
Exaggerated might be a better word. It is stories meant to educate kids on proper behavior. The consequences shown in Struwwelpeter are just empty threats parents make - but depicted in that book.

I also read it at age 6 or so.

Many American parents would find it inappropriate for kids given how graphic and negative it is. I think it is a classic however.

verst··on Show HN: Learn German with Short Stories
German parenting is very different from American parenting. Struwwelpeter is an extreme, but it does capture the essence of the tough love approach, emphasis on following rules (or suffer the consequences) etc

Certain elements of German culture did not just develop in the last 150-200 years :)
