versk··on Nano Banana 2: Google's latest AI image generation model
At the point now where basically any photo that isn't shared by someone I trust or a reputable news organisation is essentially unverifiable as being real or not

The positive aspect of this advance is that I've basically stopped using social media because of the creeping sense that everything is slop

versk··on A list of developer questions to ask prospective employers
It wouldn't really make sense as a question on a Joel test seeing as its a design style. A Joel test is more about ways of working.

Maybe this inspired The Pogues' classic "streams of whiskey" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPpGp_J3z2A
versk··on A list of developer questions to ask prospective employers
The Joel score is 22 years old now and fairly significantly outdated. It predates unit-testing, ci/cd concepts, cloud computing, microservices etc etc. Scoring 12 was perfect in 2000 but its below baseline in 2022.
versk··on United States vs. One Book Called “Ulysses”
Secret unbeatable boss. Michael Chabon wrote an excellent essay about his efforts to read Finnegans wake in the NYbook review
versk··on United States vs. One Book Called “Ulysses”
Its funny because once you read enough of it to properly grok the working of the stream of consciousness style it becomes a joy to read, as easy to comprehend as your own internal monologue. Reading ulysses once you crack it is like trying on someone elses consciousness. Blooms is a nice consciousness to inhabit, Stephens less so, but both almost unbearably rewarding. Don't get too caught up in understanding every weird association that pops into and out of either characters head, although there is certainly pleasure to be had in doing a close reading with research, where by you get to fill out a characters own mental map. A book of untouchable genius
versk··on 9-Euro-Ticket
on one hand, free travel for millions of citizens, on the other, higher profitability for a handful private bus operators.

Its surprising to me that someone would even consider bringing this up as a valid counter argument. Interesting to see how deeply Neoliberalism has seeped into western culture.

maybe this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEz5GfZUnBU went viral in ireland for the accent and the novelty of seeing a city centre addict being interviewed about football on tv. The point where he strats realizing he is making a coherent point starts around 50 seconds in.
versk··on The Death of Microservice Madness in 2018
I'm skeptical 800 million dollar projects would pass through local government at that level in 5 minutes, unless everyone who voted in favor had already been canvassed or taken part in intense debates at other meetings or were rubber stamping a special committee decision etc. What regional authority was it where 800 million dollar projects happened so regularly?

versk··on Infinite Ulysses
Two men stood at the verge of the cliff, watching: businessman, boatman.

— She's making for Bullock harbour.

The boatman nodded towards the north of the bay with some disdain.

— There's five fathoms out there, he said. It'll be swept up that way when the tide comes in about one. It's nine days today

The man that was drowned. A sail veering about the blank bay waiting for a swollen bundle to bob up, roll over to the sun a puffy face, salt white. Here I am.

Nice website, if a little unresponsive. If it gets just one more person to crack Ulysses and discover the immense beauty of this extraordinary work than it has to have been worth it.

versk··on It’s painful to do a tech startup in London
"I wanted edgy. I wanted mobile. I wanted hip. I wanted cool."

"Actually I continue to fight with myself not to expose two individuals in particular who have been completely toxic to the very infant ecosystem which needs the exact opposite."

"I’ve been in San Francisco for 23 days now. In these 23 days I’ve been here, I’ve met with some of the brightest names in technology angel investing, signed customers, partnered my company with a team of MBAs for an entrepreneurial project, and have had more productive business development meetings than in 10 months in London."

This reads like parody but it seems to be serious. Please be careful mbesto

versk··on Moving to Ireland
Define "dynamic fast-paced IT industry"

sounds like a meaningless platitude to me. From my experience most companies have huge difficulties finding good irish candidates because they are both just low in numbers and inclined to immigrate to London.

versk··on The Story of Japan's 'Lost Decades' was a Hoax
> China is, simply put, orders of magnitude bigger

Ah China, Like religion, a topic about which people who have no idea about are comfortable making grand, utterly wrong statements.

China's GDP is about 50% bigger than japans, its exports are about 2.5 times japans. The idea that china is too big to fail is ludicrous. It might be possible to argue though, that its too big to succeed

versk··on Why We Can No Longer Trust Microsoft
I keep hearing this on HN and reddit, but I think this is a mainly an echo-chamber effect. I'd say its far more likely that the vast majority of people don't actually care or realise what was happening, or they do realise and still don't care. I'd be surprised if the NSA leaks have any noticable impact on Microsoft's revenue.
versk··on Inside An Illegal Party In An Abandoned Subway Station Deep Under NYC
Still happening, except they wouldn't last 2 hours like OP's story. I took an american colleague to a rave (in dublin) about a year ago and he was freaking out at the fact that you had to meet someone somewhere then get passed off to a few more people before you got there. "Its like the movies man!"

Then we raved until 9 in the morning to some deep techno. There were no official photographers.

I honestly thought NY would have a majorly active underground party scene.

versk··on Leaseweb has wiped all Megaupload servers
completely uninformed here, but wouldn't having the servers wiped be better for the defense? no evidence for him, but none for the prosecutor either.
versk··on A new lightweight lift cable will let buildings soar ever upward
It seems like you have a lot of misconceptions about cities and there health and environmental impacts, which have been proven multiple times to be lower in per capita then suburban and rural communities, often by great amounts. I'd like to understand why you think the decentralized model is more sustainable, It requires cars and roads to live outside the M25. Other comments have dealt with these numbers already.

Anyway, to my point. I see no reason why new technology and interconnectedness is going to lead to the decline of the western city. My Experience suggests its more likely to lead to a greater desire among young adults to move to the urban cores (as they always habe), for Sex/Marriage, Culture and Nightlife as they see there own friends partake, so to speak. At the end of the day, extremely few people would find the internet an acceptable replacement to living amongst ones peers

versk··on A new lightweight lift cable will let buildings soar ever upward
Not everything is a software problem, I think you are hugely underestimating how much more power is required for an elevator to self propel vertically upwards compared to a counterweight system. I'm not an expert but I'd have to guess its at least 10x if not potentially much more

versk··on EU sets timeline for single telecom market
I'm not an expert, But I'd imagine the opportunities for growth would override the desire to preserve revenue from roaming.
versk··on Pirates playing a game dev simulator complain about piracy
Comparing freemium game conversion to Triple AAA piracy is ludicrous, and the argument that a freemium game should convert more because its designed to convert people is the most textbook definition of a specious argument I've ever seen.

Successful Free-to-Play games like League of legends are suspected to convert greater than 10 percent of players to paying customers. Of the millions of players who pirated Bioshock infinite, I seriously doubt that only 1 percent could have afforded to pay for it and had a desire to play it.

versk··on Pirates playing a game dev simulator complain about piracy
"when in reality there maybe 1% of pirates that would have otherwise bought the game"

Your number is ridiculous, and no-one assumes every pirated game is a lost sale either. Do you have any evidence to support this number?
