verganileonardo··on Chesterton’s Fence: A Lesson in Second Order Thinking
After I learned the concept of First order thinking, I have noticed how most mediocre managers incur in problems of it.

They save money on saving, without realizing it is going to make every waste more time. They make a decision that only makes sense if no competitors react. They solve problems that end up causing others. It is impressive how this simple ability is a great predictor of performance.

verganileonardo··on Ask HN: Which kitchen utensil gets used most at your office?
Yes. Forks are used frequently. Some people use knives. Most people don't ever use spoons.
verganileonardo··on Looking for founders for three startup ideas
Probably sharing risk (and upside) and attracting a different profile
verganileonardo··on Ask HN: How did you fix your narcissism?

verganileonardo··on Can You Locate Iran? Few Voters Can
Not sure if only taking into account the % of voters that precisely mapped where Iran is located is enough, as it would put someone that selected Egypt and South America in the same group (wrongly identified the location).

I would prefer an 'average distance from the border' analysis, in which we would be able to compare which group is clearly unaware of Iran's location (selecting Europe or even North America, for example) and which group at least has a basic idea of the location (Middle East).

verganileonardo··on Ask HN: What should people not do with their work computer?
Besides committing crimes (pirating content, fraud, etc) and doing questionable things (such as accessing porn), I would refrain from creating anything using my work computer (such as a web app, mobile app, blog). It is very common for companies to add clauses that says that anything you produce using their equipment is their IP.
verganileonardo··on Ask HN: What are your favorite email newsletters?
My favorite is Ben Evans' newsletter https://www.ben-evans.com/
verganileonardo··on WeWork’s CEO Makes Millions as Landlord to WeWork
Rent should be similar to market price for the region. Regarding location, the family wants the store to the be sucessfull for 2 reasons: (1) the rent period is going to be longer and (2) they own the retailer and want to invest in viable stores!
verganileonardo··on WeWork’s CEO Makes Millions as Landlord to WeWork
That is quite common in retail. Usually the family owns all the stores and just rent them to the retailer. (At least in Brazil)

Although it sounds bad, not sure how it is perceived in real estate

verganileonardo··on WhatsApp Cofounder Brian Acton on Why He Left $850M Behind
How many Whatsapp users care about privacy and encryption? How many chose Whatsapp because of that?

I believe most users simply use it because it is the most used messaging app in their country

verganileonardo··on Brazil Nuts Are Brought to You by Rodents
Something that locally we call "Castanha do Pará"

verganileonardo··on Ask HN: What methods and tools can I use to decrease my app churn?
Do you demand a registration? Or users can try before giving your their email address?

Do you have a mini tutorial (3~5 'swipes') for the first time users?

Did you try sending a personalized email to users that created an account and then stopped using?

verganileonardo··on Ask HN: What do people pay for on a regular basis
I subscribe to: - Netflix - Spotify - Google Drive/One - iCloud - RescueTime - Lastpass - Audible (1 credit per month)

I donate to: - One small NGO that assist poor college students with basic stuff (rent, food, etc)

verganileonardo··on Ask HN: What buzzwords or expressions do you dislike the most?
Personas go beyond the things you mentioned, they should also consider motivations, objections, fears, etc.
verganileonardo··on Ask HN: What buzzwords or expressions do you dislike the most?
Schumpeter used this term in 1942 to describe startups destroying incumbents.

"In Schumpeter's vision of capitalism, innovative entry by entrepreneurs was the disruptive force that sustained economic growth, even as it destroyed the value of established companies and laborers that enjoyed some degree of monopoly power."

verganileonardo··on A website to read and share contents related to startup ecosystem
Are you being ironic, right?
verganileonardo··on Giant graph datasets
Did you try kaggle?
verganileonardo··on Ask HN: Best way to learn copywriting and sales?
Read everything published on: - www.conversion-rate-experts.com - https://copyhackers.com - Ramit Sethi (i learn a lot by assessing his messages)

Also, the most important thing I learned: do not rely on your intuition the best copy! Run a short open survey with your client and website visitors to learn what they want and how they describe it - then, use their exactly words and phrases and scenarios to describe the product

verganileonardo··on The Giant, Under Attack
Probably not fraud, if the accusations are true. This sounds similar to what Bill Ackman did when his fund shorted Herbalife - he started a campaign suggesting Herbalife was illegal and demanding an investigation on the company supposedly illegal practices. [1]

verganileonardo··on Ask HN: What subscription services are worth their price?
Google Drive (especially to expand Gmail storage)
verganileonardo··on Ask HN: Mailing lists that HN readers ought to know about?
I agree! It is really entertaining and resourceful. Read it daily
verganileonardo··on Ask HN: Looking for tips to be a “Morning Person”
Wake up as early as you can - and get out of bed Go to sleep earlier (around 10~11pm) - that is the most important part to make it work

Start the day by exercising (will wake you up); and end the day reading (it helps you calm down)

verganileonardo··on Ask HN: How do you write effectively?
Hey! My two cents

2 sources of ideas: - Keyword Research (use SEM Rush, KeywordTool.io and AnswerThePublic; this is great for SEO)

- Qualitative Research with customers/leads (just send an email asking them what are their goals, challenges, obstacles, etc; that is a great way to start writing topics that your clients care about)

How to write fast - I try to copy the structure of similar articles and then fill in the blanks - I just sit and write as fast as I can - and then review and edit to make it better. I think that separating this two steps is a great way to write more - first you write, then you judge your content.

Another tip - I usually see more success writing fewer articles with higher quality (and word count!) - 2k+ words articles perform a lot better and can position you as a source of relevant and deep content

verganileonardo··on Ask HN: How do you deal with the down periods of running a startup
I read The Struggle

http://www.bhorowitz.com/the_struggle

Then I remember that it is normal/usual for a startup and move on as fast as I can - easier said than done :)

verganileonardo··on Ask HN: HN for China?
Reddit, maybe? :)
verganileonardo··on Ask HN: Why it is seemingly hard to break duopolies in hardware?
