venzaspa··on An algorithmic failure beneath the secret ballot
We only recently started requiring ID here in the UK, it was a move that was seen by many as a form of Gerrymandering because the actual recorded rate of voter fraud in a general election is very low, around 200-300 cases per election usually.

In the last general election 16,000 people were prevented from voting because they didn't have the correct ID - despite there being mechanisms for them to get suitable ID for free ahead of an election.

Sometimes the fix is worse than the actual problem you're trying to solve.

venzaspa··on Germany’s RobCo hits $1B valuation
Mini diggers are cheap to rent for a few days on a job and you can shift absolutely tons more in a single day than a labourer can do in a whole week.

If a roofing company can complete three jobs in a month compared to one job without a goods lift then renting one for each job makes economic sense, especially if it's physically easier too.

venzaspa··on Powerless F1 drivers frustrated by Bahrain F1 software glitch
As far as I'm aware the FIA can inspect whatever element of the car they like.
venzaspa··on U.S. postal inspectors shut down website selling counterfeit postage labels
Here in the UK, they've started putting QR codes on them and gave everyone a deadline to use the old ones. Has effectively got rid of this problem.
venzaspa··on When did Google get so weird?
> Google has been working on this sort of problem for decades, and it's paying off for them.

Is there any evidence to say this is true? Anecdotally I've heard more people (my mum, not just geeks) getting frustrated about the quality of Google search results.

venzaspa··on Grok 4.7
Perhaps he doesn't want to use it because it's owned by human being who many people view as vile.
venzaspa··on Charts built for Chat
A more cynical take than the rest of the replies here, but the truth is my bosses all love graphs and charts, doesn't really matter what they are for. I pepper them into tools I make just to ensure they're happy.

If you've ever used Aruba Central, this methodology is everywhere, absolute dogshit networking tool but there is a graph for absolutely everything. There's a VLANs overtime graph which provides information that absolutely 0 network engineers in the world would ever need to do their job.

venzaspa··on Rivian's gambit for full autonomy
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I don't really want to be just sitting in my car tapping my knees while the car drives for me.

I'd rather these guys just focus on building a Euro spec model of the R3 and getting it over here.

venzaspa··on Flock Wants a Closely Surveilled World with No Exit
No, it arrests several thousands of people every year for breaches of the communications act(s) - this could be for online harassment, stalking or trying to defraud people over Facebook messenger.

It's the equivalent of 'wire fraud' in the US.

venzaspa··on We built our house for LAN parties (2024)
It's funny because there's a comment about the cabinetry being expensive despite it just being a 'bunch of wood' but actually if they opted for the right wood panels instead of the standard veneered chipboard used in a lot of offices, it probably would have made the whole setup look a lot more homely. They probably do need a bit of colour and some items on the wall to break it up too.

Saying that, I'd live there in a heartbeat.

venzaspa··on Show HN: GET Together – A social network where you don't need POST to Post
> Is there any way to avoid this?

Don't set it up.

venzaspa··on I Connected My Withings Body+ to Home Assistant with an ESP32
We've got a few Withings Steel HR watches in the house, would be interested in doing exactly the same with those. Perhaps I'll spend a bit of time digging around.
venzaspa··on Smartphone LED detects hidden cameras with AI
In my personal opinion, you're normalising technology that has overwhelmingly more benefit to creeps than to non creeps. So even if you're not a creep yourself, you are helping them.
venzaspa··on Disrupting a new covert influence campaign from Russia
It depends on who your target audience is.
venzaspa··on OpenAI restores 5-hour Codex and Work limits for ChatGPT Plus users
I used to think it was pretty great but now it just means you can't plan your usage across the week.

It's a slightly entitled complaint but when you 'waste' 80% of your remaining usage because you get a reset you weren't expecting, there's a ping of disappointment there.

venzaspa··on Why some US restaurants are banning tips
Why would you tip at a retail store?
venzaspa··on AI;DR (AI; Didn't Read)
People are posting on this very website and commenting on Reddit using AI. I can't get myself into the headspace that would enable this behaviour. What exactly is the point of not engaging in conversation yourself and getting a bot to post it for you on an free platform. Crazy.
venzaspa··on Pixel Watch 5
I've been using a Withings Steel HR for 10 years now, the battery still easily last a month, activity tracking is good and has some basic notification support. I can't imagine having another thing to charge daily.
venzaspa··on England set to be one of the first countries to eliminate hepatitis C
England and Scotland are separate countries, the UK is a federation of them both.
venzaspa··on Ghost Cut – Or why Cut and Paste is broken everywhere
This person is free to think this, but I don't think I agree.

Personally I'd prefer something to be done about cut/copy-jacking where you try to copy a highlighted item and your site or application decides to copy something entirely different in an effort to be 'helpful'.

If I'm copying a url, I don't want my browser prefixing it with https:// for example.

venzaspa··on Show HN: Bento - An entire PowerPoint in one HTML file (edit+view+data+collab)
Incredible stuff, absolutely love it. The only thing I don't like is that I've got absolutely no reason to use it.
venzaspa··on Flock Credibility Lost as It Repeatedly Lies to City Councils, Police, & Public
What type of crime though, the US has substantially higher rates of violent crimes and those are the ones personally I would rather not be the victim of.
venzaspa··on How proprietary formats have become Microsoft’s main tool for lock-in
To be entirely fair though, this is a policy set by the organisation and not Microsoft themselves.
venzaspa··on Goes-19 weather satellite enters Safe Hold mode
As an aside, I'm always surprised how US Gov websites look like they've been made in Dreamweaver in about 2006. Not even seemingly with a emphasis on usability either.
venzaspa··on Cloudflare Drop
Broadly speaking any organisation facilitating piracy is implicitly a criminal one. Piracy is a pretty large field though and the economics of say a streaming site are going to be very different from running a torrent tracker. The fact you can use a torrent tracker without even visiting the site (Radarr/Sonarr etc) tells me that running a tracker site, probably isn't very lucrative.
venzaspa··on Resetting Xbox
CoD is just one title though, the deal included WoW and Candy Crush and the rest of the Activision IP.
venzaspa··on Resetting Xbox
Depends, Tesco (the UKs largest supermarket chain - one of the largest in the world) on average net about 2.5-3% profit on a given year and they have to do a lot more than pump out a game or two every few years.
venzaspa··on The Doorman's Fallacy in action
Isn't it named after the hypothetical scenario about a doorman? The doorman fallacy isn't even specifically aimed at what is more profitable, its just saying that there are softer roles that aren't well defined that aren't replicated when the role is automated away.
