venj··on Marines being mobilized in response to LA protests
Many countries do it, with random controls such as statistics checks (like revenue vs employees count, compared to similar businesses) and random visits.

This does not eliminate illegal labor completely but significantly reduces it.

venj··on Ask HN: How did the internet discover my subdomain?
I had this issue with internal domains indexed by Google. The domains where not published anywhere by my company. They were dcanned by leakix.net which apparently scans the whole web for vulnerabilities and publishes web pages containing the domain names associated with each IP address. I guess they read them from the certificates
venj··on Three Mile Island nuclear plant restart in Microsoft AI power deal
This event happened in 2022. this is the only year since 1995 where nuclear production fell below 300TWh (278TWh in 2022 vs 360 in 2021 and 320 in 2023).

These cracks are not the only factor for the poor performance on nuclear in 2022 : several reactors had to do their 10-year maintenance (grand carénage), which had been delayed because of the pandemic.

It's hard to extrapolate reliability issues from an event that happened once in 30 years.

venj··on Helldivers 2 players knew how to mobilize against Sony after training in-game
The issue was that the game was sold in more than 100 countries where the PSN is not available.

This was not mentioned anywhere on the game steam page nor in game, since the PSN link process was fully disabled.

So people played for more than 2 hours (which is valve’s refund limit). And when the news broke out, they realized they couldn’t create a PSN account.

That was the real trigger of the outrage.

venj··on Charging a lithium battery to 80% only?
Indeed, and for the t480s we could undervolt the CPU to help with thermals but these are not normally accessible to the end user.

So if you are an average user of a Lenovo laptop without technical skills, you probably have a machine that does not meet the advertised performance, and no way to fix it.

venj··on Charging a lithium battery to 80% only?
I think a lot of laptops do this because their cooling system is too weak for the CPU.

The Lenovo Thinkpad t480s comes to my mind: with factory settings, the CPU was unable to reach its advertised boost frequency nor maintain its max non-boost frequency for more than a few minutes. After 5 to 10 minutes, the machine was usually running at 300/400mhz under its advertised clock speed.

Undervolting helped a lot but could not fix the issue completely, under clocking was the only solution to maintain a consistent clock speed.

venj··on France prepares for possibility of electricity blackouts during winter months
> To add to everything you said, the Covid crisis also impacted maintenance, delaying repairs by about a year

You’re absolutely right ! I forgot to mention that

venj··on France prepares for possibility of electricity blackouts during winter months
EDF’s loss is due to the Arenh (Accès régulé à l’énergie nucléaire historique - regulated access to historical nuclear energy). This is a regulated market that was built to give a fixed price per GWH for new electricity companies.

The goal was to allow new providers to enter the market before investing massive amount of money in new power plants.

The idea was the following :

-EDF provides 100TWH at a fixed price, to allow newcomers to enter the electricity market (which was a monopoly) - new companies would then invest in new power plants to reduce long-term costs.

It did not work as expected: new power companies just bought cheap electricity and re-sold it without investing in their own plants.

That worked OK for a few years. But this year, EDF had a perfect storm:

- several nuclear reactors were taken down for a scheduled maintenance - corrosion issues were detected in several other reactors, bringing them down at the same time - the Ukraine war caused a massive increase in fossile electricity prices.

So EDF still had to sell electricity at a low price as defined by the Arenh, but had to import electricity at a higher price to compensate for their unavailable reactors.

This situation is completely absurd: EDF has to import electricity at high market price to sell it to a lower price through the arenh.

We even see some companies benefiting from the Arenh that are suspected of stopping the B2C segment just to resell the electricity on the European market at a higher price.

That’s why EDF is losing billions this year.

Here is an article explaining the Arenh and its flaws in more details (before the war so quite outdated, sorry I couldn’t find more sources in English):

the plane involved in a Boeing 777. That's right in the title of the article.
venj··on How to find a job as Software Developer in Germany
It's very hard to compare European and US salaries: in a lot of European countries, you have social security, unemployment and retirement coverage provided by the state and financed by taxes on the salary.

So you have a much lower net amount of cash, but you get real benefits that would be part of your negociation in the US.

venj··on Fire declared in OVH SBG2 datacentre building
are your domains at ovh too ? If yes, I'd consider changing this: this morning the manager was quite flooded and the DNS service was down for some time...
venj··on How does coronavirus kill? Clinicians trace a ferocious rampage through the body
They are Included in the daily reports since beginning of April IIRC. The total number of fatalities also includes losses in retirement houses for March.
venj··on French companies benefiting from state aid can't buy back shares
We have a long history of companies abusing the government subsidies in France. So when the covid-specific aids were announced 2 weeks ago, there was a big concern that some companies would abuse them.

So yes, this announcement was really expected

venj··on France could nationalize big companies if necessary: finance minister
French business owner here. The current goal is to prevent companies from failing to avoid mass unemployment:

- If you need to suspend your workers contracts, they are covered by the state. No need to fire them.

- all tax collections have been suspended

- your credit lines with commercial banks are covered by the state, so you can suspend payments or increase them if needed

- The BPI (Public Investment Bank) has an emergency loan available for companies that could run out of cash due to the situation.

They are not talking about the aftermath yet but these efforts cost a huge amount of money. My guess is that they will recover money by raising taxes for several years.

venj··on FreeNAS and TrueNAS Are Unifying
Yes, when you use a cache disk (or pool since unraid 6 apparently). Data is moved automatically at night. Cache pools are BTRFS mirrors so they now can provide redundancy of the cache.
venj··on All Chromebooks will also be Linux laptops going forward
Another important difference: you can still install linux on a macbook after it is EOL'd by Apple. HArdware support is poor but the machine can still have an OS patched on a regular basis.

venj··on Openwrt 18.06.2 released
have a look at ubiquiti routers: their edge router lite is capable of handling gbit, and can protect against buffer bloat at up to 100mbits/sec. the only doznside is that they are harder to manage than the average consumer router

They cost about $100

venj··on OpenZFS vs. Btrfs and other file systems (2017)
There is this myth over the Freenas forums that ECC is a must-have for ZFS.

If you read closely the posts that are supposed to prove this claim, they never give strong evidence that the pool losses are directly linked to the lack of ECC memory.

It always ends up with cyberjoke stating that the issue was linked to lack of ECC.

Moreover, One of the OpenZFS developers confirms this is a myth here : https://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1235679&p=...

TL;DR: Zfs is as vulnerable as any other FS to bit flips. So if you care about your data, use ECC, regardless of your file system.

TL;DR :

> In another sign that the company has prioritized the iPhone, Apple re-organized its software engineering department so there's no longer a dedicated Mac operating system team. There is now just one team, and most of the engineers are iOS first, giving the people working on the iPhone and iPad more power.
