Founder / CEO @ Griffin (https://griffin.com). We're a Banking-as-a-Service platform that's got our own bank license. We help fintechs like Stripe, PayPal and Coinbase hold customer money and integrate banking services with their applications.

venantius··on Low carb diet leads to “clinical remission” in 3 cases of type 1 diabetes
I’m also a T1D. I assure you, lots of diabetics have tried keto diets. It doesn’t put the disease “in remission”. That’s not how the disease works.
venantius··on How We Write
That's exactly right. We don't want /products page to noticeably have been written by Jessica while /pricing is noticeably by Andrew.

We want a consistent corporate voice - partly because otherwise we don't have an actual brand identity, but also because if Jessica or Andrew leave then that voice leaves with them, which also just services to confuse.

venantius··on How We Write
It's heavily inspired by Monzo's TOV - hence the shout-out at the top :)
venantius··on Show HN: An API to store balances and transactions
We are planning on offering a competitive service to this later on this year. The major difference for us is that we’re an actual bank, so we need to run this infra whether you pay for it or not.
venantius··on London may have gone into a Covid-accelerated decline
Surely you mean removing slow trains from the mix?
venantius··on Twenty-one year old with no pre-existing conditions dies from Coronavirus
I think they're related; healthy people often (implicitly) assume they are healthy because they have done nothing wrong to deserve being ill. This then causes them to act with unexamined cruelty towards people who are ill.
venantius··on Covid-19 is now officially a pandemic, WHO says
Given that current measures in the US don't come close to Italy/SK/China, that seems highly unlikely.
venantius··on N26 customers feel betrayed by the German digital bank’s decision to quit the UK
Revolut is a bank in Lithuania but not in the UK.
venantius··on Open-plan offices decrease face-to-face collaboration: study
This article is from 2018 and gets posted pretty regularly. I happen to agree with its core thesis but I'm not sure we get anything out of having it on the front page again.
venantius··on Seattle-area voters to vote by smartphone in district election
And this sounds like the opinion of someone who has spent literally zero time investigating how universal the consensus is among voting security professionals about how paper is still the best, most reliable, most secure technology with which to run elections.
venantius··on Why is everyone a bank?
If you're interested in this space, we're building a fully-regulated platform bank to essentially power all of these consumer/business facing banking applications.

venantius··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2019)
Griffin | Senior Clojure Engineer | London, UK | Full-Time | https://griffin.sh

We are building an API-first white-label bank in the UK to be the partner bank of choice for fintechs. We want to make it easy for startups to launch prepaid cards, run brokerages, start insurance firms, and more - all over API.

We just closed a £3M seed round. We've got a team of senior banking execs and two engineers already onboard and are looking for a third engineer. Our CTO was the CTO and co-founder of CircleCI.

Stack is Clojure[Script] / Kafka / Postgres / Kubernetes / AWS

venantius··on Tether: The Story So Far
I'm not sure the Hawala comparison is accurate; Hawala relies on essentially net neutral flows between nodes [exchanges] and trust-based credits and debits (not credit in the sense of literal credit, but credit in the strict ledger sense). This is in place of an actual transfer, which is what happens with crypto assets (unless Patrick is referring here to some specific decentralized exchange mechanism) - a transfer is made from one digital wallet (the original owners) to an exchange's, and from there presumably traded to someone else who is coming in with a fiat asset.
venantius··on Rxdb: A reactive database where you can subscribe to the result of a query
I'm not sure why you would use this over something more battle-tested like RethinkDB which was also built with this use-case in mind.

venantius··on The Cost of Preemptive Deals
I don't find this surprising at all and I think it's likely often in founders' best interests to still take a preemptive deal. It removes risk (which creates value) and also allows them to remain focused on operating the core business. There are obvious downsides here but I'd guess on average the benefits of that slight extra dilution far outweigh the costs.
venantius··on What Companies Are For
To an extent this does exist in the form of the listing requirements for NYSE, NASDAQ etc. Matt Levine has talked previously about how the coupling between "higher standards of operating", "selling your shares to the public" and "being listed on a specific exchange" are kind of weirdly conflated at the moment and there's no particular reason they all need to be linked in such a manner.

venantius··on Equifax removed the $125 claim payout option after millions submitted claims
This underlines how small the settlement actually was in comparison to the actual economic damage people experienced. Normally nobody shows up to make these claims because they don't actually feel significantly personally affected.

venantius··on SoftBank could bring down the house?
They went further than the greenshoe - Matt Levine has a great post breaking it down (see the second section of his post here: https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2019-05-15/wework...).

venantius··on A new credit bubble gets ready to burst
My theory 2 years ago was that the likes of Uber, Lyft et al. would cause more and more people to buy new cars that couldn't really afford it. Should demand for ride sharing ever stall or fall off, the continued increase in people entering the "gig economy" workforce in such a levered manner would be catastrophic to the auto loan industry.
venantius··on Scanning the fintech landscape: disruptive models
At present we're pre-launch even within the UK, so unfortunately no. We aim to in the long term.
venantius··on Scanning the fintech landscape: disruptive models
Thanks! Those are the goals, among others (we also want to make it trivial for companies to issue card products or launch online lenders).

I suspect Getbabb may have difficulty with the crypto angle. Not clear. Railsbank does not intend on becoming a bank and operates with a lighter-weight regulatory framework than we're aiming for.

venantius··on Scanning the fintech landscape: disruptive models
We [https://griffin.sh] are building a bank-as-a-platform in the UK due to the friendlier regulatory environment compared to the US. We see a huge opportunity in this space and most of the existing incumbent institutions have stumbled into the space rather than building a purpose-built company to solve the issues that a platform bank can solve.
venantius··on Its butterfly keyboard design has failed, but Apple has yet to admit its mistake
Then you're lucky. We have two 2017 MBPs and one has a broken R key. Broadly speaking (a) the failure rate is really high and (b) the fact that it can only be fixed by a complete front plate replacement makes this a punishing error. In the old days if a key broke you could just replace that key most of the time. Here you need to replace half the chassis, which necessitates a trip to the Apple Store.
venantius··on Keeping master green at scale
Airbnb uses a monorepo for JVM-based project but most of Airbnb's code at least as of mid-2017 was not run on the JVM and was hosted multi-repo.
venantius··on Ask HN: How to speak like a leader, not like an engineer?
I strongly disagree. Leadership is fundamentally emotional-political-strategic, which are not skills that most engineers invest in. You can argue that more engineers should and do have those skills, but when someone says something like take an executive/leader lens rather than an engineering lens, they're trying to imply that you're only thinking about solving a logic puzzle rather than trying to win sales.
